Summer 2007

I thought it would be a good idea to document what's happening musically in Summer 2007. I don't know what it is about this summer in particular that is bringing all the good music back (lol probably the fact that…eh, nevermind, long story), but I am so overjoyed with the comeback of my old favorites that I can't help but say something about it.

First of all, the Smashing Pumpkins got back together (ok, just Corgan and Chamberlain) and released an AMAZING album, one that not only introduced new/modern sound but also went back to classic Smashing Pumpkins roots (such as the Mellin Collie-influenced track, "Bleeding the Orchid"). I am thoroughly impressed by Zeitgeist, which actually took me by surprise considering the fact that most reunion albums stray too far from the bands' roots and therefore lose all familiarity and end up disappointing die hard fans. God I can't wait to see them live at Red Rocks!!!

Fuel reunited as well… yes, I do mourn the loss of frontman Brett Scallions… but I am looking forward to the release of their new album. I'm a little skeptical that Fuel will be able to preserve their distinctive sound without Scallions (and the somewhat depressing decline from Daughtry, who would have been a perfect replacement). I'm assuming that I'll write more on this later, once the album comes out (August 7th, I believe?).

Garbage released a new album as well! However, I was somewhat unnerved and disappointed that most of the songs on Absolute Garbage were mere remixes of past singles. I will say, though, that one track, "The World is not Enough," was quite impressing. It had a bit of a beat (in contrast, most of the remixes were more -based), which in turn was reminiscent of Portishead, and I liked the transition. To be honest I have yet to listen to the album in its entirety, so once again, I'm sure there is more to come here.

Ok, here is some really exciting news. I'm not going to start any rumors, BUT… I recently met a guy - who happens to play the guitar - and we started talking about music (specifically Vertical Horizon)… it turns out that he played with two of the guys from VH (not sure which ones…)down in Florida at an open jam!!! It was pretty nonchalant… he wasn't even sure that anyone would really know who VH was (but the look on my face and my shriek of sheer excitement made him realize that I was a huge VH fan). He didn't have TOO much to say, other than the fact that the VH guys are chillin' down in Florida (at least 2 of them, anyway)… but it got me thinking… maybe they'll bring something back? Maybe not Vertical Horizon per se, but possibly a birth of a new band? That's something to watch for…
(Oh, and if I end up going down to Florida, I'm totally scoping them out) :P
