GENRE TAGS

No general overarching tag for 'classical'

~ traditional Indonesian percussive music, hella predating Western classical music, still being composed today in Indonesia and now by Western composers

~ art music between 1600-1750, including but not limited to Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel

~ not classical 'music' but the classical period (mid 1700s to early 1800s and beyond for a few composers), more strict and reined in than baroque, structured compositions, most notably Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

~ meaning the era, which started around the 1820s and lastly until the turn of the century, with many spin-offs and negative reactions. Composers moved away from the structure of the classical era and more into flowy, emotive symphonic pieces. I might break it down later into early and late romantic, but I'm too lazy to do that right now.

~1880s onwards!!!

~~ I know slightly more about tango than jazz, but still have probably tagged some things 'tango' which would horrify true fans. I like a lot of South American tango, especially Astor Piazzolla.

~~ started around the late 1800s into the early-mid 20th century, lots of French composers. Like the art movement, more about creating an atmosphere (like the sense of a colour) than expressing a strong emotion. Shorter pieces, usually solo or few instruments as opposed to symphonic style. Most notably led by Erik Satie and Claude Debussy

~~ based on the art movement of the early 20th century to focused on expression of strong emotion. Like an aftershock of the Romantic era, lots of German composers.

~~ I don't know much about jazz so this is just a bunch of stuff I think sounds like jazz??? Would probably offend and horrify true jazz fans.

~~~ funky jazz with some fierce slap bass, shades of aggressive nutmeg and sprinklings of heroic muffin. CHIKACHIKA-OWWW!
~~ early 20th century and onwards, in the beginning it was another reaction to Romanticism, but this time it's ANTI-Romanticism, "Make it new!". Like Marcel Duchamp, but in music period form. Hmm, I see it as the precursor to contemporary classical music. Because it also largely encompasses 'modern' composers who prefer to compose in classical or even baroque ways. Sometimes they combine these older elements with newer elements, but they arguably prefer the older elements as being more 'pure'. I also grouped a lot of the Russian composers from the late 1800s/early 1900s in here because stylistically they don't seem Romantic to me, but rather something entirely different. That's not the usual definition, but that's how I understand it.
~~ came about in the early-mid 20th century, stylistically sparse, usually (but not always) one instrument or small group of instruments. Often based on repetitive melodic patterns, can be very hypnotic, mesmerizing. Lots of compositions based on standard notation, but lots of electronic pieces too. Steve Reich branches into both styles. It's a bit of a ponce-y label that composers don't seem to like to be labeled with, but is popular with a lot of listeners.
~~ is music composed from the mid 20th century to present time, still largely in standard notation form, but many composers incorporate technological (eg electronic) elements, as well as more fusion with other genres (dance, film, etc.)
~~ music specifically from Taize, an ecumenical community in France
