    Radiohead - Kid A

    let's get started then.

a promising synth riff. keyboardy. oh no, glitch vocals. fuck. ok, straight vocals! ah, thom yorke's restrained, dulcet tones. i'm really not liking those glitchy vocals. they aren't rhythmic, and they're barely tuneful! interesting delay on the vocals (how do they do that?). alright, i can feel this is building up. and those glitch vocals are getting weirder. oh oh oh here we go, a new synthesizer getting louder and louder! no it's gone. aw come on, thom, give me sweet release. give me a crashing drumkit. give me a cymbal, please, i NEED a CYMBAL. oh OK we're getting swirlier (?), and it resolves... into laid back stuff. aw. augh, stereo effects. i hate that (it must be my mild OCD or something, but it just makes me feel all weird). alright, this was their experimental track, surely. finding new sounds, working out how to fuck up samples of mr yorke. that's ok.

very nice beginning. oooh, yeah! diggin' that beat and low-cutoff xylophone sound (you know what i mean). ok what the fuck was that! right, vocals. wow, that's weird. i don't think that effect really suits the tone of the piece so far... percussionless breakdown! my favourite kind. OH YEAH A BEAT, but still those vocals. i know i come off as hating electronica, but this beat would've been cooler if it was on a live kit. wow those vocals are weird. something about shadows... BASS GUITAR fuck yes. drum break. i'm excited. gentle synth? NO! i want crunchy synth, man. i want to headbang, but in a groovy way, not a rocky way. y'know. alright, some real nice pads here. and just as i was about to crack, the drums pick up again! yay! no, don't hold out on me, man, keep it going. alright, so it's a good song, but the vocals are crazy and it should've taken off.

alright, a bass guitar. i remember this song. i remember that this one isn't actually that bad. good synth effect, it blends with the bass well. A CYMBAL! i can tell this will be good. this has clean vocals, i think, and that brass at the end. can't wait. lots of cymbals! i'm a big fan. aw man crazy trumpet stuff is going on, i am tripping balls! woooaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. everyone... alright, cool. i am in the groove now. that guitar in the background is wicked creepy. diggin' it. BRASS oh yeah. doo DAH DAH! more cymbals... more brass, oh maaannnnnn now THIS is a good build-up. HOLDIN' ON! you bet i am, thom yorke! i am banging my head as i type this. ah, and the moment ends. as it must. i am satisfied - but what's this! it's not over yet! drums again, atmospheric brass sounds. wow, this is like... Radiohead ft. Naked City who are suddenly actually cool now. nice. love that chord at the end. another one! alright. end? hmmm, a symphony. oooh, some nice shifty effects to end.

alright. i don't need to review this song. fuck i love this song. that's all you need to know. this isn't happening...

cool pad. hell, this track could be purely ambient with that baby. nice way to chill out after the previous track. brian eno meets radiohead, jeez that'd be cool. the backing synths are really nice, subtle touches. ah, a nice uplifting note. you ARE here after all, yay.

optimistic - i suppose i am somewhat optimistic for the rest of this album now. a guitar! nice surprise! nice drum and guitar. i'm diggin' it. oooh, break it down, mr guitar man. aight, we've got the gist of it. time to change... but what to, i wonder? oohh waowaooooo! a snare drum! that's always good. so now we're sort of just chillin', that's cool, you know. this seems like the right time to have a massive breakdown (c'mon, every album should have at least one), but maybe they got sick of doing that. ah, nice stronger ending... wait a sec! is this some kind of jam right at the end? they should've developed that more.

we're keeping that laid-back vibe from Optimistic. but now it feels... hazy. what is thom yorke saying? liking the guitar. ah, here we go. ok, this is interesting, but it's kind of like... rhythmic variation, but too similar. it's a nice jam, but it feels like it needs a solid direction. and the triplets are getting old. alright, stronger vocals! go for it, yorkeboy. woah, shit. the ground is falling from beneath my feet. hm. at least it didn't fade out.

oh shit. no. i can tell that you can dance to this. that synth line is very good, but fuck! the drums! that snare hit is like 1983 all over again. i thought we'd moved on, entire world. right, vocals come in at the right time. you sound pretty sad, thom - it must be the drums. ok, very nice vocals and harmonies. please change that fucking drum beat. weird synths in the background. they should probably be accentuated. i just realised, this'd be crap to dance to - there is no consistent thumping bassline! hm. weird sounds. you had half of the transition to something cool down, now CHANGE. THE. FUCKING. DRUMS. oh my god. crazy synth in background, but i'm wishing there was a proper, y'know, chord or something. and that pad again... man, that is a fucking nice pad, you know? this was almost a fucking incredible song. almost. i'm not sure what the drums could've changed to, now that i think about it, but they could've done SOMETHING... alright, and dissonant wailing to play us out. suitable atmospheric.

gapless transition! alright. bass guitar and a nice keys sound. those drums may be get a little irritating. i don't really have anything to say. i think the drums could've been more laid back - those snare hits demand your attention, they're like LISTEN TO THIS SONG, but the rest is sittin' back, sippin' a beer, relaxin'. guitar! thing! doing crazy shit! vocals pick up! alright, a new section... too brief! and they could've crescendoed better. ahhh, minor sounding stuff. i like. duhh duhh duhh... the drums are mixing it up, and those vocals are a nice touch. guitar is back. this is building up, you can tell. walkin' walkin' walkin'. we get some cybals, yay. straight guitar, ohhh yeah that has some nice stuff going. NO BRING IT BACK don't make wailing noises! this is not Ariadne! percussionless? what? but you were just going somewhere else. aw man. that's it?

interesting synth line. it's like... an organ. but not. yeah. ok anyway. awww, thom has come to sing to me as my boat leaves the harbour. but there's something i haven't told him, and i never will, even though i should. does anyone else get that feeling? woah, harp. this is like putting Ambient 3 on fast-forward. goooooood panning effects! SHIT i never thought the day would come. i don't feel terrible, even though it's going left right and such. however, it's kinda distracting from the calm. ohhh when that organ drops away and I WILL SEEEEEE fuck that's powerful. the harp is kind of not suiting the mood... but it's ok. no, don't go out of key. you just fucking ruined it.

silence. the end? no... bonus track approaches. here we gooooo and it's gone. well ok. that was weird. heh, this silence is better than In Limbo. I SPEAK IN JEST, GOOD SIR! and then more silence, interesting. ok. it's good, i guess. i get annoyed when i finish an album and i'm sitting there, thinking about everything that just happened, and then the CLICK WHIRRRRRR of the CD player derails my train of thought.

overall - definitely not as bad as i thought. some high points, some low points. i'm going to have to listen to Amnesiac again, and to Pablo Honey, but even though i think it isn't bad, it's still their worst album. sorry, guys.
  • could i BE more of a winner?

I was in HMV today, and I saw The Soft Bulletin for TEN DOLLARS. "Wow," I mused, "I must buy that! But wait, my minimum cash withdrawl is $20 - why not spend it all?" And lo and behold, there was Evil Empire, ALSO for only $10! Hooray for Mother's Day sales.

So I am now the owner of a Rage Against the Machine album and TWO The Flaming Lips CDs! I really want that one that has 4 different CDs, Zaireeka. One day.

Sun 27 Apr – Biffy Clyro, Yves Klein Blue

Now I'm not a good journalist or anything, but this concert (I went with xlephierprime and Tau-Neutrino) is definitely worthy of mention. (And 50 other last.fmers are thinking the same thing right now...)

The show started with Yves Klein Blue, who were OK, but incredibly loud. Then Biffy came on (the drummer and guitarist both shirtless) starting with Saturday Superhouse, which was awesome, but I didn't actually realise what song it was until the second chorus, at which point I started singing the two lines I knew and jumping up and down a lot.

The awesome thing about Biffy is that they sound pretty much exactly the same live as they do in their recorded stuff, but they have pretty lights and you can jump up and down without scaring your cat. An interesting note is that Simon Neil played standing in front of his amp and speaker, which would really REALLY hurt.

They played a lot of songs I hadn't heard, and I don't actually know the lyrics to quite a lot of songs, but they did play Who's Got A Match?, Love Has A Diameter, Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies and finished the set with Now I'm Everyone.
The encore consisted of a guitar and vocal solo version of Machines, followed by the incredibly fantastic mosh song, Glitter and Trauma, which xlephierprime and I had been screaming for the entire night.

Overall, it was PURE UNADULTERATED ROCK, and I will not be talking for about a week, as the awesomeness of Biffy Clyro has melted my vocal chords.
    MON THE BIFFY!

    (The setlist is here.)

    Where's Moo - 播放Float

I'm not just saying this because they gave me a free t-shirt. Listen to it. Right now, goddamnit. RIGHT FRIGGIN' NOW.

(Edit: the live version rocks, too!)
