Sun 1 Mar – The Australian Pink Floyd Show

This was the second time I saw the Aussiefloyd live. The last time was in Nijmegen (http://www.last.fm/event/446023) where they did The Best Of The Wall, now they were back in a bigger venue with the complete version of The Wall.
We (my dad and I) were sitting on row 1 right in front of the bass player. So we had a great view of the stage.
At 8 PM exact the house lights went down and the tune of Outside The Wall started to play. In The Flesh? came suddenly and started with a blast. Awesome. Crystal clear sound coming from the stage. What a sound and what a light show! Simply awesome.

They played almost a note-to-note rendition of the original Wall show in 1980 and 1981. Instead of real brick wall they used a backdrop screen showing animations based on the original Wall footage, The Wall movie and ofcourse their own Australian humour.

Some highlights from the first set:
- The guitar solo during Mother;
- The vocals during What Shall We Do Now?;
- The backing singers in very tight clothing during Young Lust.

The last brick was put in place at the end of Goodbye Cruel World and it was time for a short break.

The second part of The Wall has the more heavier songs in it, so I was pretty excited to hear them.
“Oi, I’ve got a little black book with me poems in!” someone shouted from the stage, the start of Nobody Home. The vocals were absolutely perfect. The bass player slouched in a chair and even the Gomer Pyle series on the TV with the “Surprise, surprise, surprise” line fitted in perfectly!
And then, Comfortably Numb, also known as guitar solo heaven. That says it all, period.

Then the transformation of Pink to the fascist leader after The Show Must Go On with the second rendition of In The Flesh. Awesome. Great usage of the backdrop screen with the hammers and flags.

Waiting For The Worms is also one of my favourites. Pink did use his megaphone to shout his instructions to his followers. Great.

The Trial was hilarious. All the characters were played by the band (except for the Judge). The percussionist as the Teacher was really hilarious. He stood right in front of me shouting and throwing his stick around, awesome.

After [Outside The Wall I saw some people leaving, but I knew there was still more to come. Another 40 minutes of greatest hits! Shine On You Crazsy Diamond Parts I-V was beautiful. The Great Gig In The Sky was a perfect tribute to the late Richard Wright, his face was constantly faded in the background with the Water scene from the original The Dark Side Of The Moon footage.
One Of These Days is such a powerful song with that great bass playing in the beginning and of course a piggy! It wasn’t a very nice pig, but it was a BIG pig! It was inflated at stage right and bouncing around during the end of the song.

After that the guitar player thanked us for coming and told us that they really enjoyed Amsterdam (and said that two of them enjoyed the delights of Amsterdam yesterday on their day off ) and that this was their last song.

Brain Damage and Eclipse finished us off. Again superb use of the screen with all the usual suspects.

All in all, superb show. Don’t miss them when they’re in town. We will probably never see David, Roger and Nick join again, but this is the best you can get!
