Wed 8 Jun – Panic! At the Disco, fun., Funeral Party
I haven’t written a note on here in forever!
Anyway, I went to see Panic! At The Disco, fun., and Funeral Party on June 8, 2011 at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago. It was on the evening after I had two finals in the afternoon so it was definitely a good break, although I actually had to pull an all-nighter the next night to finish one more take-home final…haha.
My friend and I took the subway down and arrived at around 6:40pm, and found a good spot at the top of the stairs in front of the bar. Some people pushed in front of us as the concert began, but they were short middle schoolers so it was no big deal. :P Funeral Party was already playing. They were okay, I guess – I think they’d be a better fit as a Jimmy Eat World opener, and from the crowd’s reaction no one seemed to know who they were.
Fun. was up next! It was my second time seeing them as I saw them open for Motion City Soundtrack last year. “Walking The Dog” was the highlight of their set for me, and some of their other songs like “All The Pretty Girls” were familiar. I was surprised they didn’t play “Be Calm” though. It amazes me how much energy Nate (the singer) puts into the performance, it must be exhausting! I’d imagine that performing every night would be a good workout, although probably not so good on the ears. They’re still not a band that I would listen to regularly, but I just put a hold on their CD at the library so maybe that will change.
Then it was Panic! At The Disco! Their setlist from setlist.fm, since I don’t know all their songs:
1. Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind)
2. But It's Better If You Do
3. The Ballad of Mona Lisa
4. Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off
5. Trade Mistakes
6. Camisado
7. C'mon (w/ Fun)
8. Hurricane
9. The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage
10. Let's Kill Tonight
11. The Calendar
12. Always
13. Nine In The Afternoon
14. That Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed)
15. I Write Sins Not Tragedies
Encore:
16. Carry On My Wayward Son (Kansas cover)
17. Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met …)
Overall I enjoyed their performance, and the “hey Brandon, foursome?” sign was funny as well as the part when the guy threw his shirt on stage and Brandon said it smelled like Old Spice. I also thought it was cool that he gave a shout out to the people who came to the concert by themselves. I knew or recognized about half of the songs that they played – I didn’t really know “Ready To Go” at that point, but I really like that song now. The “you’ll dance to anything” part in Hurricane is awesome, and my favorite song of the evening was “The Only Difference…”, I love the part right before the chorus in that song and was totally rocking out when they played it. For the song “Always”, Brandon came onto a side stage and played on his acoustic, and it was a nice break from the loudness. “Nine In The Afternoon” was good, and of course “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” did not disappoint. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the Kansas cover…it was alright to me, but I’m not sure the parents who were there would have really approved of it. :P I left the concert being a bigger Panic! fan than I was before, and I’d say it was worth it!
