After watching, Hotel Rwanda a few weeks back, I began to think of Africa. I had the opportunity to travel to the Dark Continent in 2003. I spent almost a month in S. Africa. Apartheid began crumbling in the 1980's yet it was my observation that it permeates the culture to this very day. It's not quite one generation since the evil shitstem was dismantled so it will likely take at least another generation.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of 2pac's death. I still remember I was a freshman in college at the time. My friends and I were just amazed upon hearing of his death. He was shot before that, and we thought once again he would pull through. Flesh is no match for steel and lead, I guess. Artists don't realize what kind of influence they have on children who listen to their music. I say this because I remember I was about 11 when I first come to hear of the funk, punk, ska, hip-hop, rock, & reggae infused band Urban Dance Squad. I was at my aunt's house watching MTV (because my dad refused to get cable - if you're of Asian ancestry, you probably can relate). All of the sudden, a video came on that I totally digged. I came to listen to Culture a lot later than most reggae fans - around five to six years ago. I've been listening to reggae music for over 20 years, thanks to people like my father and uncle. Of course I listened to the righteous dreads and staples like Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Itals, Luciano, Max Romeo, Gregory Isaacs and so on, but often a time I listened to a lot slackness before I would queue up a song for example, Two Sevens Clash.
