Sat 9 Nov – Aidan Knight, Justin Rutledge

I've pretty thoroughly enjoyed Aidan Knight's musical output so far and I missed his stop in Windsor while I was there, so I was quite looking forward to this show. The fact that it was in a seated venue at the Royal Alberta Museum was a draw as well, and also gave rise to a great pun in "A. Knight at the Museum." Well, I thought it was great, anyway. October is almost done, and it's been another whirlwind of a month! Between holidays, life events, social activities, academic obligations on the other end of the country, a Zelda game, and more-or-less full-time work I'm not sure how I managed to synthesize all the things I listened to this month into an hour-long mix, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Tue 24 Sep – Frightened Rabbit, AUGUSTINES

Frightened Rabbit! In Edmonton! I was surprised to see that they were coming all the way up here and thought I should go see them in case no one else did. After all, having been in Windsor for the past five years I've become out of touch with what's cool in Alberta. I was double surprised to find that there was a great turnout for the show, and the band appeared to be as well. Rightly so, though, as they put on a pretty great show.

Apologies for the lateness, but I've been busy with internship and dissertation and that's about it really. About the same sort of mix as usual this month; some folk, some rock, some electronic stuff, and one really great hip hop track right there in the middle. Long-awaited releases from CHVRCHES, Haim, and London Grammar, plus a slightly less long awaited but no less appreciated new album from Basia Bulat.

Fri 30 Aug – Murder by Death, The 4onthefloor

This was our first show back in Edmonton, and it was a good one. Extra good because we didn't have to explain to Detroit border officials that we were going to see a band called whose name contains the words "Murder" and "Death."

First openers, the Canyon Rose Outfit (locals) were pretty good. They sounded more or less like an unseasoned version of the Sadies, which isn't the worst thing a band could sound like. I'm sure I'll see them a few more times around town and look forward to hearing…

August! We moved. I worked on my dissertation. My beard is gone. It was a busy month! Still found a bit of time for music, though. I find that I'm structuring my mixes for running these days, as that's when I listen to them most frequently, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This month starts off strong with bangin' new tracks from Shearwater and TV on the Radio, then there's the usual mix of folk, indie, and electronic stuff throughout.

I can't be bothered to write more than that this time. Maybe for September.

It's been a busy month, but then, that's been every month lately hasn't it? Not too much excitement this month, mostly just dissertation, clinical work, and preparations for moving. Oh, and Pacific Rim, which was so good we went to see it twice in the space of two weeks. Though I wouldn't put it up there with the best films I've ever seen, I'd definitely rank it near (or even at) the top of "films that demand viewing in theatres" and "films that are the most fun." The soundtrack is awesome, too, and the main theme leads off…

I've been digging Tegan and Sara quite a lot since Sainthood, so when I heard they were playing Chatham I figured I'd make the trip. After all, it's not every day a band I care about but have never seen plays a small southwestern Ontario city I don't care about but have never visited!

Openers Bernice were quite good, if a little downtempo and a bit unpolished. They'd probably have been better in a smaller venue, as they seemed a little awkward in front of a large-ish crowd.…
