The Gateway to England (WTFest)

Often referred to as the ‘The Gateway to England’- an image of Southampton is drawn. A town left behind from the mass public on their road to anywhere else.

During the last few years I have been lucky enough to witness a music scene flourishing. All year round there are gigs being held at venues like Unit and the Joiners, with an end of summer party that is called ‘WTFest’, which has hosted many great UK Rock bands over the last 6 years. The atmosphere around the event is a reminder that rock is still alive and well, with the sing-alongs, the human pyramids, fresh bands welcomed with open arms, crowd favorites welcomed back and even a tasty treats for all!

2014 has brought a lot of good music with it, and Apologies, I Have None, kick off the Friday with a headline slot bringing their noisy numbers from their first studio release since 2012’s ‘London’ LP. The Menzingers have had a big 2014 by dropping a slice of punk-rock-pie in the form of ‘Rented World’. 2012 was also a massive year for The Menzingers, hitting the World Stage with their Epitaph debut ‘On The Impossible Past’ which I’m sure will be revisited.

I first stumbled into WTFest (and the Southampton gig scene) expecting to just see The Skints and a support act or two. I stumbled out after a great night, disappointed that I had to leave my dancing partners behind to catch the train back to Pompy but satisfied that this humble scene thrives in Southampton. The vibe is infectious, the crowd chanting grows as the night heats up, the bands revel in the atmosphere. Great Stuff!
