My Favourite Things of 2008 (songs, albums and artists)

My most scrobbled artists of 2008:

1 Björk 1,944
Most played track: Hunter (74 plays in 2008)

I’m not shocked that Björk is my #1 artist this year - I’ve seen her live twice this year at 2 amazing concerts and I couldn’t stop listening to her all year round. With a lot of albums coming our in the past 2 months, I’ve played her less but 2008 was definitely the year of Björk for me

2 Marilyn Manson 1,381
Most played track: Are You The Rabbit? (55 plays)

I am pretty surprised Manson is ranked so highly here, given how quite it‘s been this year. I will often listen to all their albums all the way through, hence so many scrobbles. There lies the benefit of having a great back catalogue - plus the fact that I still really like the last album, regardless of what other fans think.

3 Janet Jackson 1,352
Most played track: Feedback (134 plays)

2008 was also the year of Discpline. Whilst not a great album, and far from Janet’s best, I always play her new albums to death, as well as the older ones almost weekly.

4 Maroon 5 1,145
Most played track: Wake Up Call (55 plays)

I got Maroon 5’s last album in mid-2007 and it really took me a while to love it, but once I did, I played it almost daily through the spring and summer. It Won't Be Soon Before Long actually ended up as my most-played album of the year!

5 ABBA 953
Most played track: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (76 Plays)

I absolutely love Abba, their songs are timeless and utterly genius. And in my defence, I was listening to them a long time before Mamma Mia came out. Which was a terrible movie, by the way and I will never inflict it on myself again.

6 CSS 901
Most played track: Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above (71 plays)

I actually thought CSS would be even higher than this because I never grew tired of CSS’s debut album. Every single track is pure magic. Donkey was cool too, and I enjoyed more than most people it seems.

7 Kelly Clarkson 782
Most played track: Don't Waste Your Time (72 Plays)

After I saw Kelly live in March, I had to get her My December album cos she was brilliant. I was really shocked at the quality of the album, and just played it constantly. There are no massive stand-out brilliant catchy tracks, but every song - without exception - is a nugget of pop brilliance.

8 Britney Spears 717
Most played track: Womanizer (70 Plays)

Most of these scrobbles are from Britney’s 5th album, Blackout. I know she’s not a “credible” artist but I don’t give a shit about that - Blackout is simply the greatest Dance/Pop album of the decade. It’s just a shame she wasn’t well enough to promote it and instead rushed into the next album. While I do love Circus - alot - , it’s still only about 60% as good as Blackout

9 Pink 660
Most played track: So What (52 Plays)

Pink (or P!nk if you failed English) brought a new album out in 2008, and it was definitely one of my favourites. It’s not quite as good as I’m Not Dead, but then, what is? I actually ended up liking the rejected songs more than the official track listing - Could’ve Had Everything and Boring are maybe my favourite songs of this era.

10 Mariah Carey 645
Most played track: O.O.C. (48 Plays)

Normally, a new Mariah album would make her my #1 artist of the year. But I really didn’t like E=MC². It was so painful to listen to her desperately trying to reproduce The Emancipation of Mimi. Instead of striking out and trying to be original and different, Mariah seemed too afraid to even attempt to break from the mould set by TEOM. Having said that, there were still a handful of songs I really liked - unfortunately none of them made it as a single. WTF wasn’t Migrate the lead song??

11 Brandy 606
Most played track: Right Here (Departed) (33 Plays)

I love Brandy so much. Each one of her albums is completely different (take note Mariah) and yet still sound so fresh and original. I really like Human, and if she had brought it out earlier, I have no doubt that Brandy would be in my top 5 artists of the year.

12 Michelle Williams 562
Most played track: We Break The Dawn (117 Plays)

To my mind, Michelle Williams is the most under-rated artist in the industry today. Unexpected was my album of the year, no doubt, and completely blows away anything Beyonce did this year. Unfotuantly for Michelle and her fans, it looks like She probably won’t get rewarded for such a brilliant album and remains ignored by pretty much everyone. At least she still got to release the album, and those of us that have it know how genius it is. Michelle brought serious heat in 2008, and no-one noticed :[
She should be higher than #12 in my charts, but she has a relatively small back catalogue, so almost all her scrobbles come from the one album, in contrast to my top 10.

13 Alanis Morissette 465
Most played track: Are You Still Mad (30 Plays)

I’m pretty shocked Alanis is so high in this list. I was listening to her a lot in the first part of the year, but I’ve ben slacking off since the summer. I still need to get her last album, I’m such a bad fan.

14 30 Seconds to Mars 443
Most played track: Buddha For Mary (31 Plays)

Again, like Alanis, most of Mar’s scrobbles come from the first bit of the year. I saw them live over a dozen times this year, which really is the best way to experience Mars. So I was kind of sick of them as the year went on.

15 Foo Fighters 379
Most played track: The Pretender (39 Plays)

I saw the Foo’s live in the summer and listened to them a lot during that period. Everyone should listen to the Foo’s, they are awesome.
