What can be said about Rage Against The Machine fulfilling their promise of thanks to the 500,000 strong anti X-Factor campaigners who propelled the unlikely 17-year-old Killing In The Name into the coveted Christmas No.1 spot?… albeit that only 40,000+ could attend from a ticket lottery draw.

Well firstly, credit to the band for being true to their anti-establishment creed, as the absence of sponsored branding is immediately noticeable. Secondly, with no sponsors this raised the question of how a free event of this magnitude was being bank-rolled… Turns out the band are for it…

As a Muse fan from ‘Origin’ days, the bitter pill of their extreme commercial success has been a tough one to swallow. Already a huge departure in sound, Supermassive Black Hole expanded the fan base far beyond the devout… and even more so when it featured on the first Twilight soundtrack.

Being an Alt-Rock child of the 90’s, any scenester-minded individual may have considered covering Rihanna through her Rated R album launch & world tour a bit laborious. But having become aware of it, then eradicating any scene adoption for the ridiculously misconceived need for a sense of belonging during my earlier years, I already had an inclination towards the odd Rihanna tune here and there. When reviewing a gig I usually endeavour to post it before the following day while the memories are fresh, before they become too distant and I begin to blur the lines between imagination and reality and I weave tales based on my retrospective emotional state rather than the facts.

The trouble with an Arctic Monkeys gig is that at the age of 30 you begin to feel like a chaperone to the scores of 14-16 year olds who’ve turned out for the event… so even faced with the prospect of losing-out…

Coming on 9 years ago I left the country of my birth, completely disillusioned by the state of the music industry there. Something that would ultimately lead to my permanent immigration, and to me ostracising myself of any association of what I left behind.

Ironically, just weeks before my Citizenship Ceremony, something that’s so heavily accented I would usually hang my head in shame… has now instilled a sense of homesickness in me.

Maybe it’s the realisation that throughout the years I’ve been untrue to myself, that I’ve been in denial about my roots… or maybe this is the first…

Wednesday afternoon five o’ clock and I’m feeling bummed at being severely overdrawn when tickets to an intimate Skunk Anansie gig at Camden Electric Ballroom went on sale, curse those excessive bank charges for stealing opportunity! After several ill fated attempts at trying to wrangle a press pass I decide to brave the first truly miserable rain of the British winter and hit the venue in hope of a box office return ticket on the door, hereby risking further depression should I still be in the rain come show time.…

Remembering my first listen to 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations I wasn’t immediately convinced being a long standing fan of the Origin Of Symmetry era, Muse had evolved far beyond my comprehension and the album had to orbit the room a couple times before it came crash landing on my head revealing that the band had indeed ascended to a higher plane of genius.
