Oh no, I don't believe that. I don't believe you can make mathematic minds out of literary ones, for instance, or you can take someone who has a a genius for dance and turn them into a scientist. People are smart in different ways, human intelligence is so diverse and multifaceted, and while you can train your mind to operate in certain ways through conditioning and practice, you will never fully realise the power you would have if you were simply good at it intuitively. As I said, I have trouble understanding numbers, long complex equations, I mean. I am competent in mathematics, I'm not stupid and I can do it when I have to, but the really complex stuff, the logical part of my brain doesn't handle as well, and no matter how many times I play Brain Training on a Nintendo DS, I would never be as good at logical thought as someone who was born good at it.

So I envy your ability to understand things that completely befuddle me. M-theory, for instance, I have tried to understand, but its not happening on even a basic level. I also dont have a very rational, logical mind, so things like philosophical paradoxes or riddles tend to go right over my head, and I think you are probably the kind of person who can understand that stuff. I do envy that.

Well thats another reason, I'm not even remotely interested in having a career that involves English Literature, especially since degrees are worth less and less as time goes on because of the academic inflation that results from too many people having degrees. Also, I have almost nonexistent interest in money, so getting a well paid job isn't particularly high on my list of priorities. I agree that its a good skill, though, and actually its one I pretty much formally trained myself in anyway. I have had a way with words since I was very small, and I have a pretty intuitive understanding of literature in general. I don't have a very good understanding of anything maths related, and while I find science fascinating, a lot of it verges on maths and maths baffles my literary and artistically inclined mind.

Hey thanks man! I'm assuming that was a compliment and you didn't mean it in the "pretentious twat" kind of way that I usually get. Actually I'm quitting soon, once I get my grant and I can use it to pay rent/buy food/buy alcohol/buy musical equipment. I'm quitting because I can learn about literature by reading fucking books, and while this approach is obviously a little slower, I seriously doubt there is anything a lecturer can tell me that isn't written down somewhere. Plus, it doesn't put me neck-deep in debt forever. You saying that reminded me of how a while back I met a tramp with a PhD and we talked about Marxism and existential philosophy. He busks in the centre of Manchester with a tin whistle he cant play, and I call him Moondog after the composer, even though he doesn't dress like a viking. But I was pretty damn flattered when he thought I was a graduate. I don't think I have ever been paid such a high compliment.

I really hope they fix a mod for ACP soon... it's getting so fucking tiresome to see LL and KK spam the place over with completely utter rubbish. At least I'd have a couple of quality discussions instead of that shit. I suppose the best answer would be to just boycot them, but somehow I feel they will just continue anyway...

Yea, it's all good and pretty much really just an exception and a stupid one at that. 7 People in the U.S. had specific licenses from the Federal government that allowed them to not only smoke pot, smoke it anywhere but receive something like 300 rolled marijuana cigarettes in a tin per month. Also, certain scientists were allowed to take, use and dispense drugs back in the 70s and 80s trying to see if ESP or something like that was even possible. Although, I don't really know if you have any interest in this kind of thing, haha, but your shout kind of egged it on as interest so I thought I'd share about it in a little more detail. I could be more specific but I'd have to ramble on, and add a larger addendum like this one.

i've been meaning to listen to the samples but am a little scared of what i will think of it. when i heard the clip of Ki devin had on his myspace, i had no clue what to think. i liked half of it, hated the other half. but after listening to the album, i found it weird then slowly started loving it. i'm sure it'll happen with Addicted too, so i plan on not listening to the samples. even though i most likely will haha D:

oh my, I had forgotten about that. I think I initially went there because I saw a couple of incredibly stupid and ignorant comments on someone's shout box from a member of that group. Having just re-read the comments, I'm surprised at how polite I was. I noticed he said, when you asked about caffeine, "Please look to the older shouts for that bullshit of an argument. thanks! " Now I am the 1st to admit that spiders and humans bodies and brains work differently, but you've got to love these results:caffeine web, spiders on drug-doses flies. Priceless!

Ah that sounds quite rewarding. Your English is excellent, so it is good that you are utilizing it. Yes, classical is movin up...The standard big 3 are in my top 5, but I have been getting into some other composers more too. I have strayed too far from the classical realm, and decided to take an extended vacation to their worlds. :) I guess things are ok, I am leaving the country in 2 months for Japan, where my next Navy duty will be. I am very excited to see some more of the world, and will probably be afk for a couple weeks until I get set up there. I will make sure to talk with you again before that :P

Hmm... I don't think we covered anything with Vectors in my Calc class. What did you cover in that class? In mine we did stuff like derivatives, implicit differentiation, anti-derivatives, definite/indefinite integrals, optimization, related rates, limits, area under a curve, extrema and minima. I think that's like everything?

I figured but it was still quite amusing. Oh, I don't know if you saw my reply on FB. I did take a calc class. I'm really sorry, I thought I had told you, but during that time was very chaotic. I wound up getting an A in the class. I got an 83 on the final though, becuase I had a hard time with an optimization problem.

Alas my dear Wouter, I rarely ever come on this site...only to check what I've been listening too every now and then so that's why I haven't been checking my friend requests...however I shall make it a daily task to come on here and update things! *chuckles*

Haha, yes, it's hard to stop because it feels like I must explain EVERYTHING. It also seems the knowledge I possess is quite niched, even for ACPers, and I do really enjoy what I study :) I hope I can take a major in it and go on with researching, if I manage to get that far. Glad you enjoy reading it, because sometimes I feel I scare people off with my wall of texts :P

What I got from it to a degree was that Paine was offering natural religion /deism as the ALTERNATIVE to the organized religions he was decrying. It was like he said "organized religion sucks so natural religion is the way to go". There WAS a preachy element to the text.
操作

RageofAnath
Um, Yes it is... its more or less the "deist's manifesto". A great deal of it is biblical/Christian criticism but when he does get around to talking about god its 100% deism. Almost any article about deism mentions it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age_of_Reason Product description here: http://www.amazon.com/Age-Reason-Thomas-Paine/dp/0806505494 and so on. I can find actual quotes from the book where he directly discusses deism and natural religion if you would like. Full texts are available online, here's one: http://www.ushistory.org/Paine/reason/index.htm
