Start And Click Series: Similar Artists From Prof. Wolfff

ABOUT

This journal series is a little game I used to read along to on this music forum. The basic idea was you started from an artist and you click the first similar artist on the list. You listen, write a few lines and rate the song and move onto their first similar artist. If their first similar artist was the same as your current run you were allowed to go to the second and if that was the same to the third and so on.

So here are the rules:

Choose an artist that you have played recently.
Choose there first artist in their similar artist tab
Write a few lines about the song you heard and rate it.
And repeat.

The game stops when you run out of steam or you’re just getting the same artists again and again even though you are going to the next similar artist down the list.

This is a very good way to also get artists you never heard of and listen to them.

EPISODE 1

I am going to split them into episodes of around 5 artists each.

I started with Prof. Wolfff and this is my journey:

1) Eulenspygel - Staub Auf Deinem Haar (8:01)
,
8/10

A nice tune. Of course not English but you get the idea what they are singing about. After a section of singing, this song goes off on a remarkable tangent with solos from organ, guitar and the drums.

As the first similar artist was Prof. Wolfff I went to the second.

2) Erna Schmidt - La Folie D' Espagne (7:04)
,
9.5/10

A recorder mixed with an array of sounds from jazzy drumbeats, strumming guitars and bouncy bass which magnifies into a loud crazy solo and a hyperbeat from the drummer. An amazing introduction which maintains energy throughout the song.

3) Eiliff - Hallimasch (8:48)
,
7.2/10
A darker feel to this song with cymbal stuttering and the use of a wawa pedal. Extrodinary writing skills with the alluding almost 'fear' of something major in the song. Keeps you entertained but does get tiring after a few minutes of the same bar. However, the vocals distorted lyrical delivery keeps you on the edge when the instrumental electrifies your interest back again.

4) Trikolon - In Search Of The Sun (15:40)
,
8.9/10

A start of a marathon that reminds me of a Led Zeppelin meets Genesis. It also has the same delivery with the lyrics of The Animals. The instrumentation is okay, nothing to special up and until the solo with the organ which tantalizingly confronts you with pure fantastic scores. The length may put off a few listeners however the vocals and divergent onto solos and instrumentation keeps you listening to the very end without even wanting to look up how much time you have left.

As the first similar artist was the same artist as another already on this list, I went with the second.

5) Tetragon - For Example (16:40)
,
9.8/10

Another long song but here I really like the drumming on this one more so than the rest. The experimentation fills and creativity the drummer shows on this song is remarkable but not the only special thing on this song. The instrumentation as a whole where the organ works with the bass and drummer is truly defined. The guitar with sparring solos and credible licks keep the song at high commendable spirit. A shame no vocals but this doesn't make it obsolete and it doesn't deter from the excellent musicianship on display here.

Hope you enjoyed this one! I certainly did.
