Haha yeah, Manny Marc seems to be pretty chill actually (at least compared to those guys). He’s mostly been producing dumbed down party music together with Frauenarzt for the last 15 years or so. Their music was actually an integral part of our music selection for school trips back in the 9th and 10th grade; after a while the teachers/bus drivers would get annoyed and told us to turn it off because they were almost exclusively rapping about sex lol. / Sure, I’m gonna check them out soon! / Definitely man, if the rest of the album manages to be on par with “Multiply” and “M’$” it’s gonna be amazing. Do you know if Rocky announced a release date yet?

Lmao holy shit man, I've just listened to a couple of tracks from that R.O.D. guy. I had no idea rappers like that existed in Germany until you mentioned him. Until now I thought guys like Blokkmonsta were messed up but this is something else entirely. You're right btw all of his songs are about him murdering/raping people and completely depraved sexual fetishes lol. According to discogs his executive producer is called Rapist of Death. His music is like Death Metal in hip-hop form. / Thanks for the recommendations man, I actually already own “In Our Lifetime” by 8Ball & MJG, they’re pretty good. I didn’t know about DJ Zirk though, I really like “Lock Em In Da Trunk”! I have already found a link for his album, thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it. I’m gonna dl his album, Heltah Skeltah and “Movin On” by Playa Fly as a start.

Yeah, that's understandable. You said that the German rap you listened to reminded you of Memphis style rap, so I guess you probably listened to Massiv's old stuff from the 90s. His more recent material sounds very different. Speaking of which; I've been meaning to get into Memphis Rap for a while but don't really know where to start because there are so many artists. I like Three 6 Mafia's early stuff, especially from their old mixtapes. What albums/mixtapes would you recommend? So far I've only listened to Three 6, Tommy Wright and Koopsta Knicca. Funny that you mentioned Blokkmonsta btw, the last time I heard about him was on a news report a while ago that stated he apparently checked himself into a mental institution for a while lol. I can't really say I'm surprised though considering his music. And he is not even the most fucked up guy from that label haha

Concerning German rap; tbh I don’t really listen to it despite most of my friends being really into it. From what I can tell German rap is either corny “real” Hip-Hop or corny wannabe gangster rap nowadays lol. I quite like Kollegah though, have you heard of him? In a way he reminds me of Cam’ron, in that he’s really ignorant and arrogant but it’s all tongue in cheek and never 100% serious. He’s adopted the persona of a Coke Dealer (and sometimes pimp) and mostly focuses on flow, rhymes and punchlines, but his biggest strength is his amazing wordplay. He truly excels in this regard. The only problem (with German rap in general) is that the beats are really bland imo, I think a lot of German hip-hop sounds like early 2000s American mainstream rap. I can’t think of any German producer even close to guys like Mike Will or Zaytoven, for instance. Anyway, I can link you a couple of songs if you’re interested!

I agree. I mean of course Officer Ricky is fake but the man has an amazing ear for beats and I have to admit I love his adlibs, especially his signature “huh”; it just makes the song three times more ignorant lol. Also LMAO @ “Seth Gueko, who act like he's the hidden gypsy son of Jacques Mesrine”! That sounds fucking hilarious. Unfortunately my French is probably not good enough to understand his lyrics since I only took it for four years in school. I’ve always liked it though.

It’s funny that you say that because it’s almost exactly the same in Germany lol. I find it especially funny if the same people praise Eminem as the “last real rapper”. This must be a European thing, that’s probably the reason why underground Hip-Hop is so much more popular here. I think lots of people here don’t understand that there is no dichotomy between art and the commercial aspect in the US and that rappers have always had a business mindset (think about 50 Cent or Jay Z) and have this romanticized version of the starving artist in their minds haha. I actually used to be one of them when I was an awkward teenager. / I feel the same way about Thugger and you’re right, on some songs he sounds almost exactly like Wayne. His vocal range is remarkable.

I agree, I definitely think his more recent music sounds different from his previous stuff. For instance if you compare a track like “Frowney Face” ,from 2009 (?) to Trap House 3’s intro. The latter sounds a lot more sinister. I don’t know if I’m repeating myself but I think there is a noticeable change in the atmosphere of Gucci’s music correlating with him spiraling down into Lean addiction and getting arrested more frequently, which culminated in his infamous Twitter rant. A lot of his stuff before 2010 was rather light-hearted beats with Gucci spitting ridiculous and outlandish images over them. But after that his music started to sound much darker and almost paranoid imo, e.g TSvRD2 sounds very different than TSvRD because of that. That whole light-heartedness is mostly gone now. I have to admit that I prefer his more recent music for this reason though, imo it’s a lot more atmospheric lol.

Perso ça me paraît logique

Cool, I’m glad you liked them. And I know exactly what you mean concerning his style of rapping. I don’t consider Young Thug a lyricist or anything, I consider his voice and delivery more like another instrument, you know. To me it doesn’t really matter what he’s rapping about because his style is so unique and weird. That’s the thing about him; if it works then it sounds amazing (especially when he’s carried by a good beat) but when it doesn’t it sounds really shitty lol. But you’re right, a big part of his appeal is the production (e.g. 808 Mafia or Metro Boomin). / I have no idea about Metro Boomin either, I really hope we’re going to get it this year at least. Every track they did together has been fire so far! How did you like Barter 6 btw?

Ah, so you have been listening to Guwop from the start pretty much? I actually was kind of a late bloomer when it comes to his music lol; I only started listening to him in late 2013 when TSvRD2 and Trap God 3 were released, which turned me into a fan. I mean I had heard of Gucci before but only knew about him because of his crazy antics and the media coverage but when as soon as I took the time to listen to a couple of his songs I realized that he’s actually a great rapper with amazing production.

I know what you mean, I’ll probably never be able to listen to Gucci’s entire discography, for instance. / Tbh I wouldn’t know the exact difference either, I guess Trap is a bit like the contemporary version of “Gangsta Rap” and Drill is just its mostly Chicago-based subgenre, right? Then again producers like 808 Mafia provide beats for artists from both scenes so I’d argue that genres probably are always a little subjective. But personally I don’t really care about genres that much, as long as it sounds good, I’m fine with it! / You haven’t listened to Young Thug? I think he can be pretty hit and miss, i.e. he has a couple of songs I love but also quite I few I hate lol. What do you think about this and this? Those two are probably my favorites by him!

I was thinking about some artists you might enjoy but we already have a lot in common regarding hip-hop, so let me think about that, I'll come back to that later. Have you heard of Lil Uzi? He's a rapper from Philadelphia who sounds a lot like a younger version of Shy Glizzy. He has one song out I really like, simply called "Uzi" ! It was produced by Charlie Heat, who's part of Kanye's G.O.O.D. production team!

Wow, no I haven’t lol. But I’ll download it as well. Man there’s just so much good music being released, do you get this feeling sometimes as well that you won’t ever have the time to listen to everything you want? / I’ve never heard of Raz Simone but I really like that song. The beat is really cool, especially the synths in the background (I guess that’s what you meant with Ambient, right?)! I’ll dl his EP as well to add it to my ever growing backlog I’ll probably never get around to finish lol.

Sounds cool, I’m gonna download it! You’re right that he’s probably not what you’d call innovative but as long as the music is in his usual style with good, laid back production, I’m fine with that! Have you been listening to anything cool lately that you would recommend?

Cool, let me know what you think of it. I was surprised to see that the beat was produced by Honorable C. Note. Maybe it's just me but it sounds very different from his usual sound. What do you think of Pilot Talk III?

Exactly, hip-hop has probably never been as varied as it is today. You have lots of different styles that would satisfy a great range of tastes like Cloud Rap, which takes inspiration from Ambient music, Trap, which incorporates elements from Electronic Dance Music, etc. But there are still lots of artists who make vintage soul-sample based beats like 9th Wonder and even Kanye, to an extent at least. I think it's really weird how Hip-Hop is always held to this high standard (that it needs to have "a message" to be good) but nobody cares about that stuff in Rock music or other genres lol / Have you heard Asap Rocky's new song "M'$"? It's really dope!

...Itunes, quelle plaie! Une des meilleures façons d'éviter les problèmes avec Itunes est de ne pas installer leurs mises à jour. De ce que j'en sais du moins, car n'utilisant pas ce logiciel je ne peux t'être d'un grand secours. Check http://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/2239688/6#f21009546

Okay, that's true! It depends for me personally, I have to be in the mood for KRIT. I really like the positive vibe from his music but sometimes I just want to listen to some ignorant shit! / Yeah, that's another interesting thing about Guwop, I think. People who don't listen to his music often accuse him of being a stereotypical trap rapper while it's not true at all. Like you said, he's made lots of unusual collabs, especially the Talib Kweli one. I can really imagine most of Kweli's fanbase bitching about it though, it's a really interesting phenomenon that most people complaining about the death of "real" hip-hop are upper middle class teenagers lol

Yeah, I especially agree with regards to Currensy. I like quite a few of his songs but nothing he's done so far has blown me away or anything. His music is nice to listen to but he's a bit of a one trick pony. I have to say I'm a huge fan of K.R.I.T. though. It's true that he doesn't really change up his formula but I think he's an amazing songwriter and producer and probably one of the most heartfelt lyricists rght now. I guess Gucci's appeal is largely due to his crazy persona outside of his music. He's one of the few rappers I actually believe when he's talking about throwing people out of cars or otherwise fucking them up lol
