Also I feel like so many of our players have been overrated by our fan base that it's led to false expectations. Are Ramsey and Sanchez in a slump or are there performances this season what we should generally expect from them in the future? Also how can we perform so well in one game then a week later we're back to being completely inept. That defeat against United was genuinely one of the worst/most frustrating games I've watched in the last few seasons because I actually expected us to sweep them away, but no Arsenal never fails to disappoint.. And now that we look to be playing well again you can bet we'll lose to Palace or Sunderland or something in the next few weeks.

Ugh that's annoying. Pretty much the same here, I think I've listened to about 5 new albums over the last year so yeah.

2k16 and we still aren't winning the league even with Ozil in the form of his life. Damn. How you by the way? Last.fm looks pretty dead these days

Damn, that sucks. Once you get the time, you should switch over to rateyourmusic.com and I'll add you as a friend.

Hi! I've been busy marketing the Spice Girls book and writing the second one on Carly Simon. I'm good though lol. What about you? Not sure if you Twitter or Facebook, but if you do, we can exchange information. I don't dislike the new Last.FM, but they also have a lot of bugs they seem reluctant to fix. As a result, my presence here is more sporadic than consistent these days. If you're curious, you can read about my records of 2015 here: http://blogcritics.org/are-you-listening-2015-in-music-lianne-la-havas-mika-carly-rae-jepsen-seal-madonna-hot-chip-janet-jackson-and-more/

I think I could see how citizen engagement would be an interesting subject, though I'm hardly familiar with it. I'll have to look further into it to see what it's all about. Good luck with the journal article! If it is readable on the Internet, send a link, I'll check it out... It's probably somewhat of a phase, my not being so much into hip hop right now. I've opened myself up to enjoying lots of other genres, so that's mostly the reason. Sadly, what I think of when I hear the term "grown folks hip hop" is those terribly boring boom bap revivalists who rap about the same stuff over and over with the same basic rhetoric. I used to be the biggest boom bap fan, and now I'm like "Geez, these artists should give it a rest." Even acts like say, Nas, Ghostface, and The Roots, that I used to love so much and that kind of go for the hip hop for grown folks approach, I have hardly any interest in as far as their new music is concerned.

Same. It's so much easier and more enjoyable to listen to staples like Prince than weeding through release after release, hoping on the off chance that you find something that really connects. I hardly listen to hip hop anymore; I think I've grown out of it a bit. I haven't even listened to To Pimp a Butterfly! The main hip hop releases I listened to from this year were '06 Summertime and 56 Nights. Tame Impala's Currents is my favorite album of 2015 though. Only now as the semester's been winding down I've been roaming the Internets more. But yeah, I'm very well and fortunately much busier now that I have a part time job. You sound stressed and bogged down, to say the least. What are you writing about in your thesis and journal article, if you don't mind my asking?

Well, that's good to know. haha. Yeah, I hardly log onto here myself anymore (as you can probably see, I haven't scrobbled anything since last year). So how have you been?

Yeah I did! I remember when Jesus Price Superstar had a wave of popularity on RHH...great rapper, and a lot of humor too. You managed to catch RHH in one of its lulls, unfortunately. I won't be on very often myself because I'm in the midst of going back to New York (I'll probably still find some time for some cursory appearances each day though).

Yeah the world cup final was a ball to watch! Admittedly the only reason that poor keeper missed the halfway shot was because the sunlight was in her eyes but still, marvelous. I will say I wish they had been a bit more aggressive and just played good football the whole game rather than parking the bus, but hey, they won the world cup so what can I say? American commentators were pretty pathetic though, hailing it as "the best goal she had ever seen". I feel you on Argentina--even some of their rising new players are forward players. It was very frustrating to watch them drop the ball in the Copa America, especially after their display against Chile. Well, it is what it is I guess. Do you think Brazil's going to come together for the next world cup? In friendlies they've actually been doing really well!

The US team has looked relatively out of form until this last game against China, and even then our finishing power was pitiable. I haven't seen Japan either so I can't speak. I have been watching the Copa America off and on but mostly just following because it's hard to find it playing around where I am, and I've been busy. You think Argentina has a chance of winning the next world cup?

Oop, sorry man I've been ridiculously busy the last two weeks. I had several live-ins and there's a major fencing competition coming up. And the WWC is fairly good I'd say--goalies aren't too great but I guess there's not much you can do about that, but in terms of plays Germany plays like clockwork (unsurprisingly) and the US has a few amazing players despite the team relentlessly focusing on fast break-type plays, usually unsuccessfully (but enough to get them wins, so?). There's a lot less sharpness than men's football, and I see more turnovers but it's entertaining.

I think Sanogo could get one last chance on loan, but I agree it's time for Podolski and Campbell to go. What's your opinion on the keeper situation if Cech does come? If I'm honest I'd rather see Ospina go than Szczesny. I see both as a bit too risky decision wise but I feel Szczesny is a slightly better shot stopper and he counts as homegrown. Cech would obviously be first choice, far more consistent and less error prone than what we've currently got

Thoughts on the season next season? Think if we can bring in Cech that's a massive step in the right direction but I'm still doubtful Jose will let the deal go through. Also reckon we need another DM to compete with Coquelin. Ideally someone who can offer a bit more in terms of build up and passing, Schneiderlin seems to fit the role perfectly. IF (big if) everyone stays fit I can see us properly challenging for the title this time.

Yeaaah that one was a screamer. Shame you missed the Copa Del Rey final--check out the highlights, the first two goals were simply gorgeous. Messi did the thing where he slipped past the entire other team's defense and slotted it in again, and the second goal was just a seamless play inside the box. It'll take some black magic to complete Barca from completing the treble.

I always liked your recs! Some have slipped my mind after a while (I'm in the process of giving Mars Ill a revive, for example) but some have stayed with me, especially The Unsees, Lu Rreals, and, of course, Godfather Don. A quick google of Dr. Oop sounds like a mix between 00's jazz hop and 90's east coast, so if he's as generally good as this one track I've heard he might be my soul artist. Is One Life by Dr. Oop?

Sorry about my late response--just got back to Houston from NYC and have been running around everywhere getting things done. If that list is sitting around gathering dust, send it to me! I could use it for recommendations, and I feel like the south is especially important in the modern music scene. I'm impressed just by the attempt of trying to dig old hip hop out of Shreveport, I think that's the first time I've even heard the city mentioned in the context of hip hop--and I'll check out thamidwest, although I'm downloading more than I have time to listen to these days. Just like old times.

Hey, I was mining some old questions for some recs and I came across your ald top 100 southern albums list. A lot of albums in there I don't even have categorized as southern in my mind (CYNE, Spirit Agent and Sol.Illaquists of Sound in particular kind of made me go 'doh!') and some of the picks on there were refreshing and surprising. Glad to see Death is Silent on there though, I feel like it's one of Cunninlynguists's better projects that got forgotten in the wake of Oneirology. I'll probably be listening to the albums on there I haven't heard yet, starting with Big Mello's Wegonefunkwichamind which I suspect you've recommended to me a couple times haha.

Yeah in my view Modric and Benzema are the two keystones of their offense, and I agree that Marcelo was the only one who really looked comfortable in his own skin. Even James looked frenetic, and Ronaldo made a few shite decisions. If Barcalona's trident's all fit by the time of the final I don't see how they aren't gonna route Juventus, strong team though they are. Looking forward to seeing what Messi pulls out during the final, though.

I should probably give it a break since it's genuinely a good album. I think shuffling a couple tracks from The Lost Tapes might've even given it the classic status you mentioned, but in general I'm a little chary of the whole mafioso genre. Raekwon's more of a bombastic character so I think it fits him well, but with Nas it seems a little beneath him. Sometimes he almost comes off as puerile to me.

I see what you mean on the production. I feel like in general older hip hop producers' lack of acquaintance with more traditional musical constructions leads them to being pretty clumsy when making albums with largely melodic production (g-funk excepted). It Was Written isn't as bad as Get Rich or Die Tryin, but there's a lot of similar rhythms and a lot of the protracted samples make me wish the album would change its pace. It's also strange that Nas's presence decreased so much between the two albums...Illmatic was somehow stripped down and lush at the same time while It Was Written leaves a lot of empty space in tracks, sonically. I think there was a focus shift from Nas as a holistic character to Nas the contemplative storyteller which fits in with the theme.

Cognautic
Feel like divulging an opinion on It Was Written? I'm in the process of giving his discography a relisten (once again) and I feel pretty negatively toward it right now. It's obviously not bad; the production is well done but as a whole the transition between It Was Written and Illmatic is extremely abrupt. Illmatic has this really aware, boots on the ground ethos to it and I feel like Nas gracelessly abandoned it on It Was Written. Nas's hypocrisy obviously isn't new to me but in context it almost feels like a betrayal...his later albums have more logical progressions but It Was Written is akin to a slap in the face. In a vacuum I'd say it's a borderline classic but taking Nas's character in account I feel like an 8/10 is slightly gratuitous...

Ever since the UCL game against PSG Barcelona has been in amazing form. Suarez planted in my favorite strike of the year in one of those legs when he was makign David Luiz look like a fool and since then they've been making La Liga look like child's play. The jury's out for Madrid until Modric and Benzema are back--the only two players on the team I really like--but this UCL has not been a good show for them.

Yeah at this point, couldn't agree more, Busquets is playing like an old man these days. Although I haven't been watching football for long that was probably the best I've ever seen Messi play; he was untouchable...gave me goosebumps practically every other time he got the ball. I never thought I'd see this years Bayern get dominated like that. They've been guilty of letting sloth and haughtiness get in the way of their football but even though they didn't have Robben or Ribery that game could've easily gone much worse for them. Any other keeper and it would've been at least 5-0.

And yeah I'm following it right but don't have a way to stream it. Clean finish by Hazard, but looking at the numbers Man United are dominating offensively, just looks like they can't put it in the damn net. Well in any case I'm not a fan of Man U, especially not these days, although I'm betting next season they're probably going to win the league

Mediocre's the word...sometimes I have this irrational hatred towards him just because he's so unimpressive. Luiz I have mixed feelings, but mostly I think the dude sometimes just runs off willy nilly and doesn't understand how to keep a tight defensive line. Barcalona doesn't really bother me more than any other big teams with diving, except for maybe Mascherano and Pedro, espexially the latter. Should've chosen a career in Spanish theater...
