Hi InsideOut fan. Maybe you’re interested in the new [artist]EUREKA[/artist] album „Shackleton’s Voyage“ - Yogi Lang (RPWL) plays Moog, Billy Sherwood (ex-Yes) sings two songs and Troy Donockley (Nightwish, IONA) plays Uilleann pipes and whistles. For more information please check out the album’s [url=http://www.myspace.com/eurekashackletonsvoyage]MySpace[/url] page or the [url=http://www.insideout.de/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=646&language=en&osCsid=b79e195365bab702efa4923747dc626b]InsideOut[/url] page as well. Stay tuned!

I hadn't noticed bits of his earlier songs in GIFT - There's some big chunks in 天城越え (third track) though. If I didn't know it was a covers album I think I'd be a little bit suspicious in places, but you're right he does stamp his own style all over it. I'm just confused now as to what extent he ripped off these songs to create his style in the first place. I certainly don't think I'd ever be able to listen to it without thinking "this is Marty Friedman" - it is so distinctively him that you could never mistake it for any other guitarist I can think of. It's pretty much great all the way through, but there can only be a certain number of standouts, and for me those are still 1, 5, 11 & 12. Maybe also 3 which seems to be a rather huge adaptation from its original version.

The [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7iCRVLtZlM]original version[/url] of that last track is quite impressive in its own way too if you're interested. The girl singing does have quite an impressive voice, I'd say and some of the original backing music actually sounds like it might have been written by Marty anyway (it wasn't but it sounds like it could have been, he near exhausted the Tibetan style in the 90s). On an unrelated note, while we're talking have you ever listened to Tony Williams, or more specifically [artist]the new tony williams lifetime[/artist]. It's well worth checking out their 1975 jazz fusion album called 'Believe It' if you haven't.

As far as I can tell "世界に一つだけの花" (track 10 here) is exactly the same as the Loudspeaker version (where it was track 5), track 5 on Tokyo Jukebox is (or should be) ポリリズム. The version I found seems to have the correct fifth track, though the seventh track seems to have been cut short (though that is a different matter altogether).

Not all j-pop is from an anime, but it is all j-pop covers. One of the ones from Loudspeaker (Static Rain) was the instrumental version of the Rock Fujiyama ending music apparently, which was (I believe) Marty's song in the first place. The Loudspeaker liner notes aren't too enlightening though are they? It barely says anything in that sleeve. I've searched a few of the original tracks covered on the album on youtube for comparison though and it seems like a large portion of the music is actually written by Marty and just inserted around the riffs and themes already in the j-pop songs (particularly the fast guitar licks). This album is a hell of a lot better than the near-unlistenable Future Addict album of last year.

Do you know the new Marty Friedman album is out (in Japan) and as such has leaked onto the internet? I don't usually try to download music I intend to buy but since there's no guarantee it'll even be released outside of Japan I thought it was okay to make an exception for this one. If and when you get to hear it, it might be fun to compare notes on it.

Thanks, but I already know it. Besides, it looks like this track doesn't really exist. There's only one(!) listener of it here, at last.fm I searched for a link to download it in many places but I found nothing yet. Seems like this song' s a myth.

Wow, that's a diverse bunch of songs. I've got no idea what to make of Sebkha-Chott though. That's quite probably the weirdest music I've ever heard. Very French...I guess is the only way to describe them having looked at a few youtube clips as well as the free stuff on last.fm. I think they're certainly much better in the studio, and there are bits that are really cool, but it's so changeable it's hard to really get it straight in my head whether I like it as a whole or not. Very cool though, glad I've heard it. I definitely like the other two though. Will have to look into more detail on the black mages, I think we probably talked about them before, but I'm not totally sure if we did or not. Thanks for checking in though, it's always good to hear recommendations - I'll have to compile a list to return the favour soon, won't I? ;)

Cheers, will look into that. As for the Planet X stuff though, it's fairly similar ot Devil's Slingshot, but with the added creative input of Derek Sherinian. Their track [track artist=planet x]dog boots[/track] is often cited as one of the best examples of double bass drumming many people have come across. All in all though fairly similar as Donati seems to be the primary writing force in both. For more of the same, it's easy to check out Donati's one-off [artist]on the virg[/artist] project as it's actually available as legal free downloads on last.fm. There are some good tracks on the On The Virg album, but I'll tell you know if you listen to the first track on that album, it IS supposed to start like that, it's not a corrupt mp3 file.

Where's this duel track to be found then? I'm afraid I haven't heard of it before. I will have to check out that Aurelius stuff, sounds very interesting, thanks for that. You thought the Devil's Slingshot album was bland though? I guess I can see where that criticism comes from. I actually like it a lot though, I think they've got a really nice tone and sound out of the instruments and there are a fair few interesting drum moments (mostly on the Donati penned tracks) that really provide the hooks for me. I don't know if you ever listened to Planet X before, but Donati and MacAlpine used to regularly collaborate with Derek Sherinian on those albums which have generally been well received. Neither Devil's Slingshot or Planet X are complete show-off shredfests, and if that's what you were expecting then it's understandable you'd be disappointed. If you see them live though, you get plenty of jaw dropping improv sprinkled generously throughout.

Hey, it's been a while so I thought I'd pop over and see if you're up to anything interesting. Spotted that you've been listening to Biomechanical - their singer did an album with the band [artist]balance of power[/artist] ([album artist=balance of power]heathen machine[/album]) which is probably worth checking out if you haven't already.
