Wasn't it a good year?

Overall 2008 was a fantastic year for music. These were my personal highlights…

Top 10 albums of the year

1.The Walkmen - You & Me

2.Mercury Rev - Snowflake Midnight

3.Iain Archer - To The Pine Roots

4.Duke Special - I Never Thought This Day Would Come

5.Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling

6.Cold War Kids - Loyalty To Loyalty

7.Sigur Ros - Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust

8.Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash

9.Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!

10.The Breeders - Mountain Battles

A special mention should also go to the Bob Dylan album. I didn't include it in my list as technically it's a compilation of unreleased material rather than a proper album. But it's frightening how a collection of castoffs from what many consider to be one of his weaker periods can still be better than the best albums of the majority of artists…

Song Of The Year

Mercury Rev - Dream Of A Young Girl As A Flower

There were many contenders, but despite it's awful title this epic track won for taking me by surprise and making me rediscover one of history's great underrated bands.

Gig Of The Year

Radiohead - 93 Feet East

Again there were so many I could have chosen. Seeing Bjork for the first time, the magical Sigur Ros show at Westminster Hall, or being in the front row to see Mogwai at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. But nothing can, or probably ever will, top seeing the greatest band in the history of music in such an intimate gig. The entire experience was something I'll never forget.
