this genre has so much to offer if it would break from these black sabbath and recent post-rock/sludge influences and try new things. Stoner metal being labeled as a retro-70's groove style of metal or this new, (sometimes) pretentious style of sludge inspired musical dirges. Instead of stoner metal we should merge some style to create some "blitzed" or "high as shit" metal, heavy metal with a huge groove and atmosphere but with some active arrangements/instrumentation. High on Fire tried it but ended being too thrashy (still great band) without enough exciting instrumentation apart from the guitars/drums. Mastodon got close with leviathan and blood mountain but crack the skye, while still a good album, became too proggy and focused on constant changing song structures without an encompassing groove. Hell Pelican and Russian Circles are heading in the right direction in my opinion if they incorporated some other ideas into their atmosphere/riff based structures..

A lot of doom bands get labeled as stoner because they are stoner bands. The two genres are very closely tied. They both have heavy Sabbath influence. Some bands happen to fit into both categories.
