Still on my word, this is the worst Metal subgenre ever. The tryhard attitude with no substance in this scene is such a cringefest.

It's actually very ironic that traditional metalheads hate nu metal and respect groove, but ignore the fact that bands from both genres very often sound the same.

Well, the friends who introduced me to Pantera in the early 00s were mostly fans of various extreme prog like Death or Nile. I don't know if progressive metal fans can be called "traditional" metalheads, though. Personally, Pantera always seemed to me to be just a very rhythmic thrash (I've heard about the big mutual influence of southern metal on them, but I don't know much about it), and given all the hype around Darell, I never thought that someone could consider them not true.

Anyway, many groove metal bands are just more brutal and metalic nu metal / alternative metal, so I often think that the difference in tags often depends on whether the person using it respects the group or not.

not that I hate nu or groove or anything, but what do you mean? aren't you still metalhead if you love all the other subgenres?

When Pantera played the groove, metalcore was played mostly by punks, not trendy teenagers.

I love the way kids try to look mature by saying that all the bands that play mainstream are doing it for the money. In the 70s the mainstream of rock was hard rock and psychedelic rock, does that mean Led Zeppelin and others were writing music just for the money?

Again, speculation. How do you prove that they just weren't fascinated by a more mainstream and trendy genre? Many genres evolved in this way as bands found a newer sound.

Because the “primitive caveman” stuff is honest art with heart and the rest of the crap you mention is a bunch of superficial corporate cunts getting marketed to idiot mall kiddies.

That’s not the point. The reason people slag these more commercially successful genres is not because of their simplicity per se. it’s because they are ultimately forgettable. With very few exceptions (Pantera, Sepultura), none of these bands have stood the test of time. Who remembers Coal Chamber? Venom was original and made a substantial statement that is still meaningful today. It’s like comparing Britney Spears to Beethoven. And I don’t particularly harbor a personal dislike. But I can objectively recognize the superficial nature of nu metal. It’s in the lyrics, it’s in the songwriting, and the entire image.

Perhaps that's not your point, but the majority of metalheads prefer to dismiss nu metal on the ground of its simplicity and that's what exactly I talk about. They try to rationalize their antipathy this way and ultimately fail because of obvious double standards. And about comparing Spears to Beethoven... Are you serious? For classical composer both Venom and Korn would look almost interchangable. What is the 'substantial statement' you refer to? I even don't like nu metal but I'd never pretend that Hellhammer or Venom are 'serious Art' in comparison to Korn and Coal Chamber. Because they are not. That's all roughly the same in this regard.

Nu-Metal and Metalcore can be pretty good music. Interesting Music. I like Linkin Park, Bullet For My Valentine and Slipknot.

Although Pantera sucks total ass except for five songs maximum, Machinehead sucks even more.

"Metal elitists" sounds like "feces experts" for me. "Metal" and "elite" are two completely incompatible words.

"And can a groove metal fan tell me 20 groove bands, no, why?" I could tell even more than 20, but I won't do it for you because you don't deserve this. And I don't need any "respect" from dirty long-haired losers who talk shit about things they don't understand in the internet on a regular basis but suck at everything IRL.

Thrash wasnt junk you fucking idiot, and groove didnt kill thrash, nobody is telling it did, the only thing we hate is that they "made" nu metal. And can a groove metal fan tell me 20 groove bands, no, why? Because they dont exist. And Selptura after Chaos A.D sucks. Have enought of fucking buthurt posers like Critical Switch, they just realize nobody respects their genre and then they need to bash on other more popular ones.

Forgot to mention Exhorder: The Law is a perfect groove metal album. Just like their Slaughter In The Vatican was a perfect thrash metal.

I'm glad that groove metal replaced that dull 80s thrash metal junk. It's great that the best thrash metal bands (Sepultura and Slayer) have chosen the groove metal way because they realised that thrash became obsolete and was inferior to groove in every aspect. It's always a pleasure to read oldschool thrash fags and hipsters whining about how "groove killed thrash" and things like that. Always reminds me of these hair metal crybabies complaining about grunge.

Helmet, Fudge Tunnel, Nailbomb, Meshuggah, early Machine Head, early Fear Factory, Sepultura's 'Chaos A.D' kick ass. Groove metal was an awesome and kinda underrated genre.

Don't understand the negativity about genre labeling. That's like saying you don't need labels for the food you buy. I don't want glam metal recommendations when i want more power metal suggestions (or whatever subgenre of metal you're into). Some bands might not have a defined style and sometimes gets lumped with whatever genre and there's always people like me who make mistakes when labeling a band, but it's a learning process like anything else.

This tag is criminally underrated. I mean, for example, Soulfly doesn't even have it in the top 5 even playing it the most period of career - of course not amount of listens, it's OK and even a bit overrated comparing to something else.

@Kerast Everything has a label including art such as realism or surrealism, so of course music would have labels (genres) too.

Hey I started a new group for music fanatics, the focus is going to be different than the ExMF and the frosty paradigm. It's a bit of an experiment but if a bunch of people get in it could be cool. Join if you are interested. I want this group to become a center for music discussion on Lastfm (even though it's metal centered, other genres are more than welcome to be discussed.) Cheers! http://www.last.fm/group/Unholy+Cult+of+the+Appraised+and+Damned
