I agree that all the Mike Patton projects and all the other alternative metal bands that imitated him don't belong here, but The residents are a totally different matter. I think they definitely belong here. In fact they're a great example of what this tag should be used for - they're unique (in the true sense of the word), their music is a pure artistic statement (and most importantly, not a musical one) - it doesn't attempt to conform to any previous musical conventions, but it isn't musically deliberate enough to be called experimental, and yet it isn't without purpose or structure so it can't be labeled as free improvisation. The narrative surrounding the band has a postmodern flavour, and the whole thing is delivered with an uncompromisingly quirky attitude. To me they seem to parallel a lot of the same concepts present in the avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century, and the term was first applied to art in that period.

All hail Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. And I dunno about anyone else in here, but I'm pretty excited for Stolen Babies' word of a new album. HuZZaH.

People should realize that there's a fine line between avant-garde and incomprehensible pretentious bullshit. I've come to hate this term.
