I agree to ambient, but Rock, Metal... Electro, Folk SHOULD NOT be global temrs, since there are many bands that don't like to be labled and furthamore, people who dislike such labels. I hate when people call me a waver or rocker or blackmetallist or whatever. It's cliche, but I listen to what I like and nobody can change that. No label, no name, nothing :) So global terms aren't good for music anymore, are they? ;) Except for legends in the genre (also a hated word ^^) and the ones who created a certain genre. Ambient can be a global term only if it isn't mixed with other styles like Nest, Burzum, etc. Bands or projects that have other sound as well.. Dan Gibson is ambient as to what >>Ambient<< is discribed in this page. For me, Ambient is different.

But artist radio is too limited in scope. Tag radio is a good thing in theory, but with the most popular tags it goes to waste. Luckily there are more specialised tags which have better tag radios. If last.fm would only allow multiple tag radio or excluding certain tags from the stream...

Apparently quite a lot of people who use this tag have no idea what ambient really is. This tag radio is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I like the music, but it's just not ambient. Then again, that could also be due to people stupidly tagging artists when they should be tagging tracks or albums.

@SirAlecHendrix, I wouldn't use tango as an example of anything if I were you, since there is no moot point in it. A piece has the 2x4 rythm (2 strong beats on 4), or it hasn't. - Oh, and the whole 'new tango' thing (which, by this time, is already quite old) and its snobbish, highly jazz-influenced sound. Very enjoyable, yet, not tango.

BauhausMoe: seems it depends how we define 'soundscape' and 'melody'. with soundscape, i mean a combination of sounds that normally (in nature or in the technical world) would immerse from an environment. in ambient music of course a soundscape is produced artificially (e.g. in). a 'melody' is a single sequence of tones and is perceived as a whole (we principally could sing it). ambient music doesn't carry one or multiple lines of melodies as e.g. in bach's music. ambient music produces a "cloud" of sounds without a clear melodic structure, including noise, that's why we call it ambient. i agree, the actual tagging of 'ambient' is not used (hopefully) as a statement about the musical genre of a track or an artist but as a "percentage" of ambience that is perceived in the music. that's why i distinguish this with true ambient music, as you can hear in the music of brian eno or biosphere. a rock track can have 10% tango, you wouldn't consider it as tango. hope i could explain :-)

'true' ghmf, 'pure' sure, resistance is futile, meaning shifts, especially in folksonomy, language like music evolves, tags are only tags and a theme, or vector only a part of a greater whole

in true ambient music, you will hear soundscapes and minimal notes or arpeggios, no melodies, no rhythmic patterns or even drums, no groove. but because a lot if music has some ambience, drone patterns in the background, or is just minmalist or relaxing, people tend to tag it 'ambient'. that's just how 'ambient' music is perceived in the marketplace. and we better (and this holds for most artists) don't label an artist with 'ambient' or 'x', because that doesn't say anything about his or her specific pieces of music (but people lazily tend to overspill the general label to each and every musical track no matter what it really is).

I listened to Enjoy by Deep Dive Corp (it is an ambient track, right?) and I really enjoyed it. You guys can recommend me anything else?
