I agree that different people like different music and just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's "bad." I like indie music because it was recorded not with proficiency but with something to say. I like noisy, cacophonous songs. I also like simple, fairly quiet ones because those often have more literary impact. I like clever lyrics. I like anthemic chants interspersed with wildly overblown instrumentals. The Mountain Goats, The Futureheads, Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, The Weakerthans, Islands, The Unicorns, Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova, The Decemberists, The Golden Dogs, etc. are all bands I love. What I don't like is when the creation of music is confined to the "popular" musicians who use synthesizers to correct their voice and people in the studio polish up the song so much that it can never be replicated live. That strikes me as soulless and base because they are trying to convince you that they can sing when in fact they cannot.

Sure thing, a lot of those bands are really shitty and weird sounding, but then again, everyone likes different music. Personally I enjoy Grizzly Bear, but couldn't listen Metal or classic rock... And with bands like Grizzly Bear, a lot of people (including me) like the beautiful, tranced, kind of sound rather than energy. It's all relative

v I'll give you Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene (never heard Land of Talk), but the vast majority of these indie bands that magazines and hipsters masturbate over are complete garbage and are no better, more inspired or musically talented than any of the shitty "-core" bands. At least the core bands have energy in their performances. Bands like The Decemberists and Grizzly Bear are even worse than Bring Me the Horizon

What is the appeal to this genre? I cannot figure it out for the life of me. They aren't technically proficient at all, their melodies are underwhelming, most of them have no energy whatsoever, their lyrics have no meaning or depth (don't give me that "there's a million ways to interpret them" BS, because that's a cop-out and you know it), and there is no emotion or passion in their music whatsoever.
