I can see, in the case of Mr. Bungle or something, that jumping from a bit of surf into some pseudo-persian techno and then ending up in lounge jazz, that could be disorienting. I admit I haven't heard much of the old records due to their not being readily available on CD, but the bits I have heard, they didn't seem to be in that vein at all. Seemed more like Opeth's old metal/acoustic transitions, ie. just jumping between soft and hard, and not actually between specific genres. It seems like they're already far enough outside their supposed metal genre conventions that to me, it's a mood shift, a tempo change, a stylistic transition, and not a haphazard change of genre. It all seems to fit within the same colour spectrum.

Why even mention genres in a music discussion? They're ultimately an artificial classification.. something made up to describe some music that's already been made, or just a pattern for an uncreative musician to follow. As I believe Toby Driver himself has said, genre classifications are more useful for the consumer than they are for the musician. Saying that motW songs don't make structural sense is a perfectly valid opinion, but there's no reason to expect a musician to follow what people expect of a "genre"

Their compositions are some of the most natural within the whole of 'metal' They take influence from a lot of other genres but their use of that knowledge is far from haphazard. I have a much bigger problem with bands like Naked City, whose albums (aside from Absinthe) are very haphazard and feel 'wacky' for the sake of being such.

I agree with EndlessCemetary a little bit. Leaving out trying to classify or describe their style, sometimes _some_ of their songs don't work too well, same goes for Kayo Dot. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Any band that pushes as many boundaries as motW or Kayo Dot wont always get things right, but will lead in creating newer ways of making and listening to music.

"Unaccessibility" is not a musical issue for me; I've been exposed to plenty of noise, industrial, no- wave, drone, grindcore, death metal, black metal, etc. The problem is haphazard genre splicing.

I don't think people get that this "randomness" is what makes this such a great band. maudlin would bore me if all of the songs were like "the blue ghost...", they would be pretty good if the just did death metal in the interesting style they do it in, the jazz bits are cool, but if that's all the band played than it wouldn't be much. All of it put together just makes up maudlin. It's just great music, and when you say "random" it's not at all random, to me this music is very accessible, and I don't see much "randomness" about it as I do other bands I like even more.

Of course, the absolute worst examples of randomness in bands (that I've been exposed to): iwrestledabearonce, Unexpect, Between the Buried and Me, etc.

"Random" does seem a bit strong of a word to use, maybe... awkward? In the case of Stravinsky's works, yes he has a lot of dynamics to his compositions, but it doesn't come off as odd (to me); it's not like he plays something relaxing and then intentionally adds growls and such to transition to a darker/explosive/triumphant mood. I don't know, as fair as eclectic genre collaborations go, I prefer King Crimson (haven't heard Mr. Bungle, Naked City is okay, SoaD is meh, despise most of these modern metalcore acts).
