Thyrfing are a Viking Metal band from Sweden. The band is named after a royal sword from Norse mythology.
Thyrfing was formed in 1995 by Patrik Lindgren (guitar), Jocke Kristensson (drums), Peter Löf (keyboard) and Kimmy Sjölund (bass guitar). From the beginning the band was meant to be a side project as Patrik and Jocke put their main force into their other band Pantheon (not to be confused with the American National Socialist Black metal band of the same name). Northern mythology and the Viking age was an interest of all the members, so the lyrics and the concept was focused upon this subject. The music was rather primitive and built upon slow pounding drums, heavy guitars and medieval synth-melodies. After two demo tapes that gained a lot of good response in the underground, Thyrfing signed to the Dutch record label Hammerheart Records in 1997. In Stockholm’s Sunlight Studio in Stockholm, their debut album was recorded, showing a much more varied songwriting. It was released in March of 1998. For their second album, this time recorded in the Abyss Studios, their music took a more symphonic touch, still keeping the roots from the older material. For future live performances Henke Svegsjö from Ancient Winds was recruited on guitar. He seemed to be a good choice and nowadays he is a full-member of the band. Once again with Tommy Tägtgren, “Urkraft” was put on tape and released in August. The year also held two mini-tours with Primordial and Shadowbreed through The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Hels Vite is a strong album, but the best moments don't match those on the previous two albums. Becoming the Eye is a lowpoint. You mention dismal and vicious, there isn't a riff on Hels Vite that is as truly vicious as The Voyager or Far at Helvete, but that's not really the intention. It's more about the sound on Hammerheart.

I'll second that Stigmatyze. Hels vite is, as far as I am concerned, Thyrfing's best release to date, and one of the most outstanding viking/pagan releases ever because of it's viciousness. Thyrfing's progression from a mediocre viking metal band (the first albums have a rather high meadhorn-rating IMO) to a unique band that can hardly be compared with anything else in the genre is more than a little outstanding.

Hels vite just shows, that the typical meadhorn-dumbfags aren't into this kind of pagan/viking metal, it's dismal, cumbersome, and extremely vicious, no wonder those fashion-vikings don't like it, as they usually only listen to cheesy "Hail odin, you're the best, you pwn the shit out of everyone"-bands.

Vansennesvisor and Farsotstider are just as amazing as the earlier stuff, it's just a different sound that you're obviously not into. I prefer their earlier albums but there are some ridiculous songs on those two albums (The Voyager, The Giant's Laughter, Far at Helvete, Jag spar fordarv). The vocal performance alone on those albums make them undeniably awesome.
