I'm thrown off by the "similarity" between The Vaselines and the vivian girls/ pains of being pure at heart. Those bands take a label like "twee" and misconstrue it to the point were it's homogeneous, over-embellished, and inauthentic (they're both from Brooklyn). Indie-pop was a way to make punk seem week by sounding even more primitive and straightforward. Not sounding overtly cute for the sake of sounding overtly cute and dressing like schoolchildren.
