由Aaron Dessner、Bryce Dessner、Scott Devendorf、Bryan Devendorf两组兄弟档和主唱Matt Berninger成军于纽约布鲁克林的五人乐团The National，兼容八O年代英式摇滚、独立乡村、乃至Joy Division后庞克风骨的低调音乐美学，总让人不禁想起The Smith、Tindersticks、Wilco、Nick Cave等一连串经典的名字。然而，The National却不是一只简单的拷贝猫，由主唱Matt Berninger酷似Stuart Staples的低沉抑郁嗓音，伴随Nick Drake般云淡风清的惆怅吉他音色，饱满厚实的鼓击，以及不时坠入这个自溺空间的琴音和管弦乐器，The National建立起一道独特的音乐魅力，游移在温暖、冷冽、温柔、暴戾间的反差性格，宛如Joy Division和Tindersticks的超完美综合体，让大西洋彼岸以一派惨情乐风自豪的英国佬也为之倾倒。

继2005年获选洛杉矶时报年度最佳专辑，并让NME祭出满分评价的《Alligator》后，2007年The National邀来Peter Katis (Spoon、Interpol)和Fred Kevorkian (Ryan Adams、Regina Spektor)两位制作大将共同打理专辑，并请到超人气民谣怪杰Sufjan Stevens助阵的第四张专辑《Boxer》，开场曲〈Fake Empire〉便以钢琴、吉他、鼓点、管乐渐进堆砌，重拾Bruce Springsteen一辈美式摇滚隽永魅力，彻底展现The National朴实而丝毫不单调的编曲层次，随后不论晦暗冰冷直逼Interpol的〈Mistaken For Strangers〉，〈Green Gloves〉和〈Ada〉里民谣吉他与钢琴令人怦然心动的交会，或〈Slow Show〉、〈Apartment Story〉流露的八O年代brit-pop畅快浪漫，十二段苍白温暖的魅力旋律，让The National最扣人心弦的惆怅绝美无限蔓延！
