Quick scan of their Pitchfork reviews: They range from 3 to 5 out of ten. That's hardly approval. Elitists don't hold the band in any real regard. In their prime, they were the poster child for dumb hopeless romantic teens who write bad poetry on Post Secret. No matter how hard they try to reject it now, that's how they've been painted by every critic since the late 90s. TGUK aren't pretentious. They're more like a child actor who grew up and just can't find recognition beyond his mainstream debut.

v the ones that get Pitchfork approval, general kudos from elitists, and critics talk about as "mature"

And no, I cannot compare this to On a Wire. On a Wire still decently incorporated their previous style, they just "grew". But this one is just... D: damnit, I guess I'm just pissed that every other "cool" Western band sounds like the same genre.

damnit, why did they have to also be an electronic/post-punk band like all the rest?! D:

I like the new album. Good to hear them doing something different, yet still rocking after all these years.

Yeah... I'm not sure about this new album either, but honestly, it might take a few listens before it sinks in. Then again, "On a Wire" got bashed when it came out and I think it might be my favorite by them. I wish they did more songs like "Tommy Gentle" and "When It Dies", but I think it's too early to judge their 'new' direction.

Simply put: "There Are No Rules" breaks away from all the notion of today's mass produced electronic influenced rock formula. The entire album rather sound quintessential to me. Maybe because I hear their honest input of influence in each song. At first I was bit dubious to hear the songs like "Automatic" and "Keith Case" but after few listening cycles I started to see the overall concept of this dark yet hopeful sounding album -- Wow! What a gem they put up! This album is beyond awesome: It's uber awesome! I am proud to say The Get Up Kids is back to the music scene once again with good songs that really matters. Can't wait to see them in Pomona!!!!!

sleeplike, in 2009 I saw them both at a huge festival and in a small club. at the festival almost nobody knew them, but those who did had lots of fun. and the club show was amazing. lots of old songs and they were really enjoying themselves

I always assumed 'I'm a loner Dottie' was one of their most popular songs? Is it just the comma that throws people off?
