THE GATHERING
是一群现在只有30岁左右的年轻人组成的荷兰的乐队，他们已经是荷兰最重要的乐队之一。这支建队10余年的乐队，每一张专辑都在探索新的音乐领域，每一张专辑的发表都给他们的音乐之旅填上奇异绚丽的一笔，开拓的思路，新的元素溶入，无法预料的变化，总能给听众带来耳目一新的感觉，在音乐中把握和引领听众的情绪，他们理所当然的成为全世界注目的焦点。

1989年秋天乐队在Hans两兄弟的组织下成立,Hans任鼓手，René弹吉他，当时还有他们的好朋友 - 主唱 Bart Smits。开始他们只是想做一支标新立异的死亡金属乐队，尝试一些别人没有尝试过的音乐和手法，还自己在家里制作了两张小样，那里面融合了很多Doom Metal的成分。

第一张正式发行的小样Moonlight Archer是一个完全的厄运死亡金属作品集。1992年6月，还在大学学习的他们，在课余时间录制和发行了第一张专辑，专辑中一共包括8首作品，键盘听上去非常的Doom感，压抑而沉稳；阴柔的和声运用让喜爱旋律的死亡金属的爱好者找到了新的亮点。但在当时谁也不知道这样的唱片能卖多少，Foundation 2000唱片公司认为他们很有前途，给了他们机会，黑胶版的Always. … 发行的1000个拷贝很快售完，现在只有唱片收藏家手里才会有，正式的唱片仅在荷兰就卖出了7000到8000 张，专辑在欧洲的发行也取得了空前的成功。这张CD对于以后的THE GATHERING应该也是一个纪念，氛围化的键盘和偶尔的女声，也似乎预示着乐队的未来发展方向。

1993年底乐队准备录制第二张专辑Almost a Dance（飘飘欲仙），在这之前Bart和女主唱Marike离开了，随后由Niels Duffhues和Martine van Loon代替。虽然这张专辑请来了荷兰著名录音师Tom Holkenborg（曾为Nerve, Junkie XL等乐录音）出阵，整个录音用了8天，混音用了4天，Niels 和Martine都讨厌对方，他们不肯合作，那些天所有人都一直在不愉快的气氛中进行录音。乐队成员也非常不满意这张专辑，因为这是一个错误的结合，一个Doom/dark metal音乐和朋克唱法相结合的产物。

1994年春天一个非常偶然的机会，21岁的天才Anneke van Giersbergen走进了他们的视线。这个偶然的相识使乐队进入了一个新的阶段，这个美丽的女人的阴冷凄美嗓音与乐队要表达的意境完美契合，为低谷中的THE GATHERING重新带来回生的魔力！

1995年6月1日到16日，在录音师和监制Siggi Bemm和 Waldemar Sorychta带领下，他们进入Woodhouse Studios录制他们的下一张专辑Mandylion。并为他们的风格做了更进一步的调整，录制完成了这张可以称为乐队“历史转折点”的专辑。在录制专辑期间乐队失去了一个好朋友Harold，他曾经一直全力支持THE GATHERING的发展，乐队决定就将这张专辑的音乐献给他表示纪念，因此这是一张气氛沉重的专辑，在荷兰，他们获得了巨大的成功，专辑排名进入荷兰排行榜Top 40，Mandylion销售连续进榜38周。

1996年的整个夏天乐队都没有再演出，Hans进入大学学习，将他还没有完成的学业完成，同时他们在决定做一张新的专辑。1997 年8月发行Nighttime Birds，所有的乐迷都没有想到THE GATHERING会变成这个样子，专辑彻底抛弃了死亡金属的根基，这次是不可思议的主唱Anneke van Giersbergen一次才华横溢的个人表演。听这张专辑专辑的确有些不同的感受，键盘对古老民族乐器的模仿和欧洲古代民族音乐的演化，都有自己的独到见解，因而这张充满了神秘的“Nighttime

If people in the UK show some support i am sure tha gathering will go there.Everybody wants and plays in the UK but they need to have a good reason to do it. Surely after the european tour,others will follow.Dont know anything but tg is always going to South America for example

I hate it when bands constantly tour europe and never come to UK. Within temptation also never do this, and dark fortress are releasing their 6th album soon, and only coming over for the 2nd time ever this month. Oh and Downloading =/= piracy

@Neve__ I wish they'd stop by the UK, too. I've had to plan a trip to the Netherlands to see them live. Not that that's worthy of complaint, but you know. It'd be nice to see them closer to home too. :( And Buy the albums. Support the band. More people need to buy their albums. [3]

Maybe because when I saw them here back in 2005 there were only about 20 people in the audience. Sad, but true. :/ I blame the promoter, but they don't seem to get much exposure here either, which is a great shame.

Why are they on tour in Europe but not in the UK? I don't get it either...I'm even tempted to go to France to see them. And agreed on buying their albums. A band as amazing as The Gathering deserves to get many more album sales than they do.

Also, it is funny how earlier in the year I only had enough hard disk space for either draconian or the gathering. I picked draconian, and loved it, still do, and thought I had definitely made the right choice. Later in the year i heard the gathering and love it just as much. 2 best bands I have heard all year!

It's just a shame that people who like The Gathering and maybe aren't familiar with trip hop will get pointed to some wank like Flowing Tears and end their search. Oh well. Definitely one of the top bands in the world. Haven't got round to listening to West Pole yet or whatever it's called, but I hope it's good :)

Bah, I don't really think of Mandylion as anything other than just "metal". Outside of being thoroughly metal, Mandylion is too "different" to really pin down. I mean, sure, there are some gothic leanings here and there (mostly the ambient track, the cheesy synthwork and the occasional bit of gloomy lower range vox), but there's other parts that sound like doom (the first riff on In Motion #1) and even some industrial and even some spacy rock music (like most of In Motion #2). But I try not to use words like "atmospheric" or "epic" as genre titles as those words convey concepts that are very subjective. The rest of their discography? Well, I don't know. Every album after Mandylion is different from one track to another, so it's impossible to pigeonhole those albums into any genre (unless you go on a track by track basis).

The creation of sub-genres can be sucky especially in The Gathering's case. I just class it all as Metal.

Mandylion is obviously Atmospheric Metal, I don't doubt the influence it had in the Gothic Metal genre but it remains Atmos Metal. Always is a Doom album, definitely not Gothic Metal. AaD is their only Gothic Metal album.

hmm, I just don't want to call mandylion gothic metal, because if you look at the lyrics it is definitely not gothic in any way, and the sound isn't all that much. Atmospheric metal would probably be closest I guess, but maybe this is one of those situations where THE MUSIC IS JUST FUCKING AWESOME AND DOESN'T NEED CATEGORIZING!
