#20- Naïve - Illuminatis
Atmospheric / Progressive Metal

This year's list is a very international affair, from Blighty to Norway, Germany, India and the USA. Let's start with a French band, Naïve. What I love about this album is the seamless combination of several musical genres - progressive metal, electronica, trip-hop, and post-metal with arabian undertones, to create a dark and brooding yet beautiful sound. Definitely alludes to influences from Tool, NiN and Deftones.

#19- Mumford & Sons - Babel
Folk

Oh dear. Am I really doing this? Sticking Mumford & Sons in my top 20? I guess I am. One of my few guilty pleasures in 2012, this is a band I used to deride for their 'boring, simplistic' music. Maybe I'm mellowing with age, like some sort of dorky cheese, but all of a sudden the lingering harmonies and plucky strings seem appealing and all too easy to listen to after a hard day's work.
