The tags "minimalism" and "avant-garde" mostly relate to the stuff he did in the 70s. What about "contemporary classical"? That is an oxymoron. I sometimes use it for the sake of discussion though. The best way I describe his full career is "chamber music". I know Steve Reich thinks of almost all of his works as chamber pieces.
