Prokofiev's Symphony Concerto ... Absolutely amazing ... I've written about it (with a free download of the first movement) on my blog: http://heavysoil.blogspot.com/2008/09/hitherto-heavy-soil-has-been-reasonably.html

prokófjev was a great and versatile composer of 20th century western-style art music. as he is dead for over half a century, his music is by no means "contemporary", and only his 1st symphony may be considered (neo)-"classical" (and is even named so), the rest is mostly non-classical modernist music.

David Oistrakh and Sv.Richter were the best performers of all times and sure they played Prokofiev better than anyone.Heifetz,Gorovitz-they just were not such painters in music as Rister and Oistrakh were.

Oistrakh should be heard for the VCs, though Heifetz gives an excellent account of the Second.

the first violin concerto is amazing. So is the second actually, and the two piano concertos that I've heard up to now.

The fifth Piano Concerto and the eigth Piano Sonata are great, especially when performed by Sviatoslav Richter.
