Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band. The band credits their first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a black metal sub-genre of dubbed “medieval metal.” The album showed off the fascination Satyricon had with the Middle Ages, along with the raw black metal with blastbeats produced by Frost mixed with acoustic guitar and flute. On the next album The Shadowthrone this medieval spirit was preserved.
Regarding one of their latest albums, Volcano, the frontman of the band, Satyr, stated in a press release/biography, published on their homepage, that “the music is rock based but more extreme; it is black metal pushing the boundaries that began with bands like Venom and Bathory, reinventing ourselves based on a foundation of rock oriented Black Metal is our philosophy.” It resulted in a total of 4 Awards for Volcano being, the Norwegian Grammy for “Best Metal Album”, an Alarm award for “Fuel For Hatred” in the category for “Song of the Year”, as well as The Alarm Award for “Metal Album of the Year” and The Oslo awards for “Best Overall Album”.
They have many famous fans: James Hetfield, Joey Jordison, Bjørn Einar Romøren, and many more.
They have toured with Pantera, among others.
Most recently, the band released a new studio album, Now, Diabolical. The album is generating a great degree of controversy in the black-metal underground, due to its straightforward, “radio-friendly” take on the genre. The album is selling extraordinarily well, however, even outside of black-metal circles.

yawn...what went wrong, satyricon? I listened to a couple of tracks from age of nero on their myspace and they are just as terrible as the ones from now diabolical.

'I'm a bit afraid of an "Ambient" Project. ' - Why? Ambient black metal is great, and at least they would be doing something interesting finally. I started with now diabolical, which I quickly got bored of, and I am guessing the last album is more of the same, but have been getting into the classic first thre albums recently. Hopefully they will return to making good music.

No, I have not checked the books out, but I am assuming that black metal or whatever you want to call Satyricon now is not making money like the bands Slipknot or Metallica. Maybe for their style of music, but I wouldn't say they sold out. When they make Load (Blowed) or Reload (Reblowed), then I will say they sold out.

Even Immortal could earn much more money if they would do a "normal" job. Satyr announces big changes in Satyricon: After the Age of nero-Tour they won't do anything, after (a couple) of years, they want to wirte a new Album. Satyr and Frost's drumming will continue, but everything else could change, like new Instruments, new live Performer, new opportunities to take a record. Of course, I like all Satyricon, but I'm a bit afraid of an "Ambient" Project.
