Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band. The band credits their first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a black metal sub-genre of dubbed “medieval metal.” The album showed off the fascination Satyricon had with the Middle Ages, along with the raw black metal with blastbeats produced by Frost mixed with acoustic guitar and flute. On the next album The Shadowthrone this medieval spirit was preserved.
Regarding one of their latest albums, Volcano, the frontman of the band, Satyr, stated in a press release/biography, published on their homepage, that “the music is rock based but more extreme; it is black metal pushing the boundaries that began with bands like Venom and Bathory, reinventing ourselves based on a foundation of rock oriented Black Metal is our philosophy.” It resulted in a total of 4 Awards for Volcano being, the Norwegian Grammy for “Best Metal Album”, an Alarm award for “Fuel For Hatred” in the category for “Song of the Year”, as well as The Alarm Award for “Metal Album of the Year” and The Oslo awards for “Best Overall Album”.
They have many famous fans: James Hetfield, Joey Jordison, Bjørn Einar Romøren, and many more.
They have toured with Pantera, among others.
Most recently, the band released a new studio album, Now, Diabolical. The album is generating a great degree of controversy in the black-metal underground, due to its straightforward, “radio-friendly” take on the genre. The album is selling extraordinarily well, however, even outside of black-metal circles.

I'd say Nemesis Divina is their best album, and perhaps one of the best black metal albums ever made. On the other hand, their changes in style and sound makes it quite difficult give any of their albums any rate, at least to me, but I'd still say Nemesis Divina in some way stands out of the crowd, so to speak.

I like that they've find their own sound within the black genre. Evolving from the classic BM sounds to the heavy riffing black n' roll they play today. Good stuff, all of it!

emocore, yep! but i like :C they sounds not bad at all. if you want go true, go listen to Darkthrone maybe, or Burzum, i like them too. but dont touch plz to Satyricon. they first CD - Dark Medieval Times are one of the best in the BM also. Even Wyrd's "Vargtimmen Pt.1" can be better...

I beliefe that one of the PRABLEMS with black metal is that too many people talk about darkness and evil castles without really knowing what darkness and evil castles are reallly about. Satyricon on the otherhand is a band that knows full well all about darkness and evil castles, and they are therefore the STRONGEST band in all of Sweden for their KNAWLEGE about such topics. [2]
