One of the greatest movie songs ever. It’s place in Highlander lifts the entire film past its lofty premise into an emotional place and it never feels manipulative.

I love this song, so epic and beautiful, all the music : guitar, drums, bass, orchestra keyboards and the vocals

„Wait. Cowboys? Christianity again? After Cowboys? You went all the way back around? Oh, God, why can’t I die? This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to anyone!”

The version on Greatest Hits II, the first one I heard, is terrific, but the album version is FANTASTIC! It's got to be one of the greatest songs of the 80s, no doubt.

Actually, small correction, the very rare Freddie's vocal version is the best. That version has the full first one minute sung by Freddie instead of Brian May. You can immediatly hear Freddie sings it far less flat than May. It's identical to the longer album version except for the intro and May's guitar doing a riff around the 3:20 mark which is absent in the Freddie version. This is also the version being played in the Highlander movie.

" immortality of soul" wth are you babbling about? This song was completely born from the scene in the movie Highlander where the main character's first love dies of old age while he, being immortal, stays young. Brain May wrote it after seeing a cut of the death scene. The morose tone of the song reflects that very heavily. Where do you get this nonsense about "immorality of soul", what does that even mean? Or did you just think it sounded poetic and nice? Because in meaning and relevance to the song it's total nonsense. The song can be seen like an eulogy, a song of mourning and yearning of times past and gone and love not being forever and to treasure love because it is not endless "Who wants to live forever? Forever is our today. Who lives forever anyway?".

While you are very correct about the origin of the song and you describe it very beautifully as an eulogy of love being lost, I have to say I too associate it with the immortality of the soul. The song is so beautiful and Freddie's voice is so divine that it surpasses the mediocre action movie Highlander that the song was written about. It has now its own meaning and with the dramatic demise of the singer, I would always cherish "Who wants to live forever" as a anthem of immortality of Freddie Mercury. Because as long as there is radio where we can hear Who wants to live forever, pr as long we have it in our music libraries Freddie Mercury will live forever, thus immortality of his soul.

terrific later day Queen track, man....to think what they could have done in the 90s if Freddie had not gotten ill.

In a song of such solemnity, depth and raw emotion it's nice to Roger Taylor rocking the stonewashed denim
