  • My favorite albums of the 2000's

These are my favorite albums of the decade that just ended. I'm not going to claim that these are the best or the most influential, they just mean something to me and that's that.

    1. Fugazi-The Argument- This record is one of a handful ever to make me shudder with its brilliance. The songwriting here is utter perfection; my favorite album from one of my favorite bands.
    2. Electric Wizard-Dopethrone- The Wizard answers the question of who will push stoner metal to its slowest and heaviest once and for all. Pure hate, pure heaviness.
    3. Radiohead-Kid A- Everyone does this one, but it's so obvious. This is a legitimately great band recording their defining record. One of the few "electronic" records I can totally get behind.
    4. Majority Rule-Interviews With David Frost- This album is so ass-thrashingly good. So many risks are taken, yet nothing feels out-of-place. The only problem is that it's too short!
    5. City of Caterpillar-S/T- Intense, emotional, and gripping. …

    2008 \\ the music.

What a year: School leaving examination, driving license (on second attempt albeit the first was better), first own flat (namely in a rooming house only, but the feeling is the same), first semester at college, a shared stage with A Wilhelm Scream (YES!), first semi-professional output of my band (begot next to nothing in terms of success, money and groupies, but it's a good record of course) and a Converge hoody plus an Isis hoody (YES!!!!). While the former happenings are somewhat ok but not life changing in any sense and of course not relevant for the topic this journal seems to deal with, the latter ones do a better job at hinting at the most important thing the year 2008 had to offer for me personally: music.

While 2008 surely was no revolutionary year in music history (despite a new Guns N' Roses record), it's my personal highlight in terms of appreciating and also some kind of understanding today's music in all it's variety and aspirations. …
  • I've made a few good album purchases recently.

    Dr. Dog - Fate
I dig this album. I hear obvious Beatles influnces here. What we have here is some down-home, often old-timey and always interesting song writing. I'm completely enjoying getting to know this album and I'm amazed this band is from Philadelphia and not Charlotte or Knoxville somewhere a bit more easy going. That's what I get for stereotyping a city.

Field Music - Tones Of Town
I am enjoying Field Music's Tones of Town album for many of the same reasons that I have enjoyed XTC. At first listen, I thought perhaps the music was a bit too cheery or precious, but I was immediately enjoying the interesting time sigs and rhythms. After further listens, I hear finely crafted pop music and I remember that I almost always had to go through the same process of learning to like XTC songs.

Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice
I had never heard of Minus the Bear until I happened upon the song Ice Monster on an MP3 blog somewhere. …
