  • The best Hard Rock /Heavy Metal Albums since I was born

I'm referring to heavy metal and hard rock albums, so don't leave messages about Michael Jackson or some pop crap, and of course this is according to my criterion.

1977:Sin After Sin by Judas Priest
    1978:Van Halen by Van Halen.
1979:Highway To Hell by AC DC. Here I have to mention The Wall by Pink Floyd because is an awesome album.
1980:Back In Black by AC DC, one of the most amazing albums in the history of rock.
1981:High n' Dry by Def Leppard and very good from that year also Point of Entry by Judas Priest, Mob Rules by Black Sabbath and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. And although is not hard rock, Escape by Journey was a great album too.
1982:The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden.
1983:Metal Health by Quiet Riot, but that was a great year for music and a lot of great albums were released that year: Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne, Kill 'em All by Metallica, Show No Mercy by Slayer, Pyromania by Def Leppard, Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue and many many more.
    1984:Stay Hungry by Twisted Sister.
1985:Theater of Pain by Motley Crue. And I put this album because home sweet home was the first power ballad that aired on MTV. And because i like it very much xD.
1986:Reign in Blood by Slayer cataloged as the most heaviest album of all times. That year was realeased also the most awesome work by Metallica, the great Master of Puppets. And the third have to beSlippery When Wet by Bon Jovi.
1987:Appetite For Destruction by Guns and Roses. Although Hysteria by Def Leppard was a master piece, so I don't know which one.
1988:A tie between Kings of Metal by Manowar and New Jersey by Bon Jovi.
    1989:Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue.
1990:Rust in Peace by Megadeth, the last one of the speed metal old school albums.
    1991:Metallica by Metallica.
    1992:Countdown To Extinction by Megadeth

I leave it to there by now.

  • Best albums of 2009

Well here is the list of best albums of 2009. Hope you like it!

    34. Sirenia– The 13th Floor

Some good gothic/symphonic metal here from Morten and co. It is definitely an improvement from Nine Destinies and a Downfall being heavier, but unfortunately not as good as At Sixes and Sevens. Still there are great vocals from Morten as always and it is worth checking out.

    33. the aeonic order of vacuity – Nether
This is a demo I heard on Myspace and its absolutely fantastic considering that. It is very good slow heavy, brooding funeral doom metal. If you like funeral doom I command you to give this a try.

    32. Absu – Absu
fantastic blackened thrash, and their best album to date. Recommended.

    31. Exivious – Exivious instrumental progressive metal, really excellent with lots of changes and styles. Recommended to any prog rockers.

    30. Paradise Lost – Drown in Dakrness - the early demos
I hadn’t ever heard anything by them before, but this is excellent! Really good death doom, quite badly produced but excellent quality in the musicianship. If you’re looking for something raw, rather than the very well produced stuff like Swallow the Sun, then look no further than this.

    29. Stream of Passion – The Flame Within
This is another very good symphonic metal album from Marcela Bovio and co. but after Arjen Anthony Lucassen left, they were left to make this one on their own. They do an amirable follow up to Embrace the Storm, but the songs are less memorable than the first album.

    28. Kreator- Hordes of Chaos
Good melodic thrash metal, Hordes Of Chaos is a catchy song that would be good live. It has nice riffs and solos. Not as good as [album artist=Kreator]Enemy of God[/album, but highly recommended.

    27. Napalm Death - [album artist=Napalm Death]Time Waits for no slave[/album]
The grindcore kings do it again, just as well as on previous releases.

    26. Wyrd – [album artist=Wyrd]Kalivagi[/album]
More folky black metal, this time with a few more hard rock elements, this band is just as good as ever!

    25. Ashes You Leave – [album artist=Ashes you leave]songs for the lost[/album]
Nearly all doom metal elements are gone; this is solely a gothic metal album, but a very well done one. Their cover of Placebo’s Every You Every Me (which I hate, I can’t stand them) is excellent, and amazingly is the highlight of the album. If you like female fronted gothic metal, then this is for you.

    24. Cannibal Corpse – [album artist=cannibal corpse]evisceration plague[/album]
Not as good as [album artist=cannibal corpse]kill[/album], but still a very good death metal album.

    23. Within Temptation – [album artist=within temptaion]An Acoustic Night At The Theatre[/album]
Those waiting for a new album may be slightly annoyed at getting another live album, though it is extremely good. It’s completely different from [album artist= within temptaion and the metrople orchestra]black symphony[/album], being mainly acoustic, but the vocal performance from Sharon Den Adelis breathtaking as ever. Utopia is a very nice new song, but they are straying further and further from the metal genre with this one.

    22. Lethian Dreams – [album artist=lethian dreams]bleak silver streams[/album]
Good atmospheric doom metal that sounds a bit like Amederia. Excellent vocals, and very heavy. Recommended

    21. Mastodon – [album artist=mastodon]crack the skye[/album]
Not as good as [album artist=Mastodon]Leviathan[/album], but more of a progression away, this is still a very good album with lots of very good ideas. If you want some metal that’s a bit different then give this a listen.

    20. Ahab – [album artist=ahab]the divinity of oceans[/album]
The most depressing album I have ever heard, this is such a monolithic album, heavy and slow, but excellent. My favourite funeral doom album of all time!

    19. Alestorm – [album artist=alestorm]black sails at midnight[/album]
The most fun album of the year! This is not just a gimmick by some idiots wearing pirate hats, it is actually well written heavy metal, and the keyboardist is just excellent.

    18. Fen – [album artist=fen]the malediction fields[/album]
Seems that most British black metal these days has elements of post rock in it, and this is no exception. Its very good atmospheric black metal with some clean vocals now and again. If you like Negura Bunget, then give this a try.

    17. 3 Inches of Blood – [album artist=3 inches of blood]here waits thy doom[/album]
An excellent heavy metal album, taking influence from lots of different places, from Led Zeppelin, to Judas Priest, to Iron Maiden, but still maintaining their excellent vocal style prevalent in previous albums. Their best yet by far!

    16. Dream Theater – [album artist=dream theater]black clouds and silver linings[/album]
A really good progressive metal album and their best for several years. Listen out for the cover of Queens Tenement Funster/Flick Of The Wrist/Lily Of The Valley on the bonus disc; this is one of the best covers ever!

    15. Epica – [album artist=epica]]design your universe[/album]
Their best yet, Simone is at top notch, and it is possibly the heaviest album they have done to date. A real surprise and a very enjoyable listen.

    14. My Dying Bride – [album artist=my dying bride]For lies I sire[/album]
The violins are back! Every bit as good as the previous releases and the vocals are absolutely to die for!

    13. Wolves in the Throne Room – [album artist=wolves in the throne room]Black Cascade[/album]
More of the same, but a bit more atmospheric and experimental, with clean female vocals scattered in it. This, as well as [album artist=wolves in the throne room]Malevolent Grain[/album] are a must hear for any fans of atmospheric black metal.

    12. Wodensthrone – [album artist=wodensthrone]loss[/album]
Good organic black metal in the vein of Drudkh. Excellently performed, with a few post rock elements too. Superb atmosphere shows again how good British Black Metal is becoming. If you like Drudkh or Negura Bunget, then you owe it to yourself to give this a try.

    11. Leaves Eyes – [album artist=leaves eyes]njord[/album]
Unbelievably this is a step up from the excellent [album artist=leaves eyes]Vinland saga[/album]; both vocalists have improved (although in the case of Alexander Krull it wasn’t hard, he is actually listenable now!). This is a really good symphonic metal album, with the guitaring at top notch, as well as the bassist. There are a lot of folk elements again on this one.

    10. Wolves in the Throne Room – [album artist=wolves in the throne room]malevolent grain[/album]
This is excellent. It comprises of just two tracks, the first A Looming Resonance is a rather relaxed atmospheric black metal song with clean vocals. It is 13 minutes long, but it’s so good you could listen to it over and over again. Hate Crystal is more of the usual Wolves in the Throne Room we know and love.

    9. Blut aus Nord - [album artist=blut aus nord]Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars[/album]
Even better than Memoria Vetusta I, this album has less of a fuzz and more melodic beauty. Fantastic.

    8. Drudkh – [album artist=drudkh]microcosmos[/album]
Drudkh do it again, this is another excellent pagan influenced black metal album, with beautiful melodies, but still retaining the harsh vocals from the previous albums. Even better than [album artist=drudkh]Estrangement[album], this is one of the best black metal albums of the year.

    7. Sunn O))) – [album artist=sunn O)))]Monoliths and Dimensions[/album]
Never heard anything by them before, but this is an excellent work. It is unbelievably heavy and icy cold. Attila’s vocals are fantastic, and all the brass instruments on Alice (best track on the album) just make it. If you have any interest in either doom metal or experimental music you need to hear this. Truly a Monolithic Effort!

    6. The Gathering – [album artist=the gathering]The West Pole[/album]
Anneke has left, but you didn’t expect them to stop rocking did you? This is such an amazing album by all accounts, and Silje Wergeland (previously of Octavia Sperati) is just excellent. She is a really dreamy vocalist; her voice is just a joy to listen to. All the instruments are played very well, creating beautiful atmospheres throughout. The first 3 songs make you want to run about in the sunshine, just really happy songs to put you in a good mood, but after this the atmosphere changes to one of a hopeless desperation. It is still quite experimental, but not as much as [album artist=the gatherng]Home[/album] or [album artist=the gathering]Souvenirs[/album]. A special mention must go to the bassist Marjolein Kooijman who does a fantastic job.

    5. Nox Aurea – [album artist=nox aurea]Via Gnosis[/album]
Absolutely mind blowing. I heard a track on Myspace and was instantly hooked. They play gothic doom and are influenced by Draconian, but are a bit more atmospheric than this, at times sounding like Lethian Dreams and Shape of Despair. If you like Draconian you will go crazy for this.

    4. Emperor – [album artist=emperor]live inferno[/album]
    This is the best live
black metal album ever. Anyone who has ever seen them live (I haven’t :( ) or heard/watched [album artist=emperor]emperial live ceremony[/album] knows just how good they are live, its just a fantastic CD with all their best songs played in stunning fashion

    3. Heaven and Hell – [album artist=heaven and hell]the devil you know[/album]
What a surprise this was. I never really expected any new Black Sabbath material under any pseudonym, but this is fantastic. Its unbelievably heavy, Tony Iommi is on form (when is he not) and every riff is heavy. This is the heaviest album that they have made, and Dio is an absolute god on the vocals. He is 69 and this is still the best vocals all year!

    2. Slayer – [album artist=slayer]world painted blood[/album]
A lot of people like to hate on Slayer for [album artist=slayer]God Hates Us All[/album], but I don’t see why at all. I love that album, as well as everything else they have released. [album artist=slayer]World Painted Blood[/album] is a step up from the last two though; it’s a solid thrash metal album and heavy as fuck. It’s easily the best since [album artist=slayer]Seasons in the Abyss[/album], although there is one thing I have noticed. It doesn’t sound great through headphones, or low quality speakers, but when I play it through the excellent ones I have in the house it sounds amazing. Hate Worldwide and Psychopathy Red are two of the best tracks I have ever hard, and easily in my top ten Slayer songs. A lot of people (again for reasons I don’t understand) complain about Tom Araya’s vocals, but I think they are excellent, you can hear all the malice, hatred and venom intended to be put forward.

    1. Anaal Nathrakh – [album artist=anaal nathrakh]In the constellation of the black widow[/album]
This is such an incredible album. After [album artist=anaal nathrakh]The Codex Necro[/album], which is the most extreme album I have ever heard in my life, their later releases were somewhat lacklustre, with only 2 or 3 great tracks. But this one brings back the intensity of the [album artist=anaal nathrakh]The Codex Necro[/album], and combines with it the melodies and clean vocals present on [album artist=anaal nathrakh]eschaton[/album] and [album artist=anaal nathrakh]hell is empty, and all the devils are here[/album]. This album is fucking heavy, with great riffs and some of the best black metal vocals I have ever heard. The clean vocals are epic, there are piercing screams, amazing shouting, and seriously there are about 15 different vocal styles present here. From start to finish this album kicks serious butt and I am proud to call it my album of the year.

Dissapointing albums, because not everyone can create the best

    Xasthur – [album artist=xasthur]all reflections drained[/album]
This is just shitty ambient noise with no good musicianship whatsoever. Malefic just seems to have given up because this is boring as hell. Avoid at all costs, worst album I have heard all year.

    Lacuna Coil – [album artist=lacuna coil]shallow life[/album]
Bland and commercial nonsense, this is just sugary sweet pop music. Shame because I seem to be in the minority who enjoyed [album artist=lacuna coil]Karmacode[/album]. Spellbound was a fantastic single and I thought this would be good, but no. It’s just plain awful, avoid completely unless you would like to hear Britney Spears with some poor guitars.

    Edenbridge – [album artist=edenbridge]live earth dream[/album]
Good songs performed well but the quality of the recordings is awful and on some of the songs they don’t even record the whole thing. Wild Chase is superb and better than the album, but I was expecting more considering how good [album artist=edenbridge]A livetime in Eden[/album] is.

    Epica – [album artist=epica]the classical conspiracy[/album]
Ok, so I don’t have a problem with the performance of their own material, in fact I think it is a rather good performance, and I would have really liked it had it just been their own material. But it’s the "classical" stuff that annoys me. It is so patronising! Instead of real classical music (which several metalheads like) we get Pirates of the carribean, Darth Vaders theme tune, and the one from Spiderman. I actually felt slightly insulted by that, after expecting some real classical music.

    Delain – [album artist=delain]april rain[/album]
Not as commercial and bland as Lacuna Coil’s [album artist=lacuna coil]shallow life[/album], but its not that good. On [album artist=delain]Lucidity[/album] they had a lot of guests, and they made it all seem like an excellent album. Now that they are down to their own talents it shows that they aren’t really very good. Charlotte is a decent singer though.

    Nightwish – [album artist=nightwish]made in hong kong[/album]
A very poor live album, and not even a whole concert because of some sort of dispute with record labels regarding being able to play pre-Annette songs. The Escapist is a fantastic bonus song though, but it still feels like a cash grab.

    1349 – [album artist=1349]revelations of the black flame[/album]
All the intensity present in [album artist=1349]Hellfire[/album] that made it such a good album has completely gone, replaced with some attempt at making intelligent progressive black metal. Instead we are left with a boring album with hardly any good ideas, and a rasped cover of Pink Floyd’s 播放Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, which is a disgrace to those mighty prog rockers. Avoid, particularly if you liked [album artist=1349]hellfire[/album].

    Belphegor – [album artist=belphegor]Walpurgis rites – hexenwahn[/album]
Probably my most highly anticipated album of the year, as Belphegor have been one of my favourite bands for years. Unfortuantely it just sounds bland, as if the well of ideas has dried up, and all that was left was some songs rejected while recording [album artist=belphegor]Bondage Goat Zombie[/album]. That said Veneratio Diaboli – I am Sin, is among their best songs ever.

    Muse – [album artist=muse]the resistance[/album]
Ok, so until about October when I discovered The Gathering I thought that Muse were the only good rock band left on the planet. Rock to me is just dead, with hardly any good bands, but Muse seemed to be the only one I really liked, even loved. But [a;bum artist=muse]the Resistance[/album] fell far short of expectations. They have always had a lot of influence from romantic era classical music, but on this album they actually just become a clone of their influences rather than using them to create something unique. United States of Eurasia just sounds exactly like a Queen Song, with no originality, and on the end they just use a piece from Chopin. Laziness much? Overall it isn’t an awful album, but there is no originality, and instead of using influences they just steal from them.

Anyway thats just my take on the years music. There is a lot of dtuff I haven't gotten round to hearing yet, so it won't have everything. If anyone wants to comment and suggest bands or albums that I may like judging from this journal that would be appreciated!

  • Call your top 30 crap

I know doing journals like this are old and I’ve already done a journal like this before I reset my tracks 2 years ago, but I couldn’t resist. This was also for fun.....

    30. currently a 3-way tie, but I’ll go ahead and bash all of the bands that are #30….. I guess I should rename this as “call your top 32 crap”…. No screw it.

a.) CAKE- I just don’t like their cover of “播放War Pigs.”

b.) Devo- This band will always be known as an 80’s one-hit wonder,
    sadly.

c.) Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is far from their best album.

    29. Jethro Tull- They were proof of how crooked the Grammy’s were. (Note: I’m not even a big Metallica fan)

    28. Billy Joel- Compared to the music he made when he was in Attila, his music has no balls whatsoever.

    27. Alice in Chains- Black Gives Away To Blue is their worst album (but it’s still decent). Yeah, other than Layne (RIP) overdosing, I can’t really bash this band.

    26. Tegan and Sara- I feel like a lesbian every time I listen to their music. Not that I’m saying it’s bad to be one but you know…

    25. Bauhaus- Perhaps one of the first “serious” bands that made laugh uncontrollably because of the vocals.

    24. Fantômas- Make a new album already!

    23. Electric Wizard- They wish they were Black Sabbath.

    22. The Flaming Lips- I can never get high enough to fall in love with their songs.

    21. King Crimson- Some of their songs can put me to sleep, especially Moonchild.

    20. Judas Priest- They’ve made nothing better after Painkiller, excluding Turbo and Ram It Down which were just corny albums to me.

    19. Blitzen Trapper- I’m surprised they haven’t covered “播放Jackie Blue” by Ozark Mountain Daredevils (who they wish they were, along with Wilco) yet. Also, I expect to hear some of their songs in a generic teen drama movie really soon.

    18. Pixies- They still have made nothing better after Doolittle.

    17. The Rolling Stones- I know it’s been said for years now but who knew that a legendary band would turn into an overpriced mummy exhibit?

    16. The Jesus and Mary Chain- Psychocandy has to be the most overrated shoegazing album ever, next to an album I’ll get to in a moment when I reach My Bloody Valentine.

    15. The Velvet Underground- Again, Squeeze sucked hard and it’s damn good thing that the original members (especially John Cale and Lou Reed) weren’t part of it.

    14. Weezer- Man was Raditude abysmal…

    13. Boris- I missed these guys when they opened for Nine Inch Nails. Damn it! :C

    12. Dead Kennedys- Let’s face it, Jello Biafra was the back bone of this band. It was a smart idea to break up in 2008 because I don’t anybody was seeing through the remaining member’s bullshit.

    11. Queens of the Stone Age- Way to be homophobic, Josh. Although that emo(?) douche had it coming, not the remarks but that bottle that was thrown back at him.

    10. My Bloody Valentine- Isn’t Anything > Loveless (the album I was talking about in #16). Also I felt this band would’ve kicked even more ass if Dave Conway (the original vocalist) was still with them.

    9. Melvins- When I saw them at The Conservatory (not at The Diamond Ballroom), I felt they didn’t play long enough. (even though they did play 2 full sets and still kicked ass). Also, I acted like a shy, starstruck retard when I actually bought a shirt from King Buzzo himself. I can’t really bash these guys either.

    8. Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation is still far from their best album. Also, “Teenage Riot” = The “播放Freebird” of this band. (classic song though)

    7. Black Sabbath- Although I’ve said Tony Iommi carried Ozzy Osbourne’s ass along with Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, after Dio left they’ve made subpar albums ever since.

    6. The Smashing Pumpkins- Zeitgeist was their version of St. Anger.

    5. The Beatles- Perhaps the most over-whored band of 2009. no wait, ever.

    4. Modest Mouse- I’ve already said this but, ever since Good News for People Who Love Bad News, they’ve made inferior songs/albums compared to the songs/albums before.

    3. Pink Floyd- Just like King Crimson, some of their songs put me to sleep. Also they’ve made better albums than The Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, which songs from those albums (most of the time anyway) are overplayed on Classic Rock radio stations.

    2. The Brian Jonestown Massacre- This band will probably be only known for that lulzy on-stage fight at the Viper Room, after being shown on shows like “World’s Dumbest.”

    1. Bob Dylan- Simply put, his vocals can get annoying if not unintentionally hilarious.

  • Ursa Major (Ita)

I loro primi 2 singoli per la Columbia Records, "Bad Girl" e "Little Girl", furono attribuiti a Rick Wagner and the Frosts. Scrissero tre album, Frost Music, Rock and Roll Music e Through the Eyes of Love, nel '69 e nel'70.
Scrissero anche 播放Department of Youth e 播放
Wagner, che fu raggiunto alla chitarra dal suo vecchio amico Steve Hunter, lavorò con Cooper per la maggior parte del resto degli anni '70, collaborando su hits come 播放You and Me e 播放How You Gonna See Me Now allo stesso modo di altri pezzi di grande successo.

Ursa Major was a hard-rocking band that released one collectible album and may have been as well-known for its players as the music they made.
The group's one and only album Ursa Major was issued in 1972. Two singles were pulled from the release: Liberty and Justice and Let The Music Play, both in 1972.
While Ursa Major came and went in a relatively short period, the band's leader, singer and guitarist, Dick Wagner, would on to work with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, helping write some of the shock rocker's biggest hits.
Wagner also had worked with other bands before joining with drummer Ricky Mangon and bassist Greg Arama, who had earlier been in the Amboy Dukes, the raucos Detroit band fronted by outrageous guitarist Ted Nugent.
Their manager Dennis Arfa managed to attract the attention of major label RCA Records who signed the band for the release of their self-titled debut album in 1972, produced by legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, KISS).
In the mid-'60s, Wagner had been in a Detroit band called The Frost. Their first two singles on Columbia Record's date division, Bad Girl and Little Girl, were credited to Rick Wagner and the Frosts. In 1969, as The Frost, they signed to Vanguard Records, a label previously noted for blues and folk acts like Joan Baez. They cut three albums, Frost Music, Rock and Roll Music and Through the Eyes of Love, in '69 and '70. In 1978 the label issued "Early Frost".
In 1973, after leaving Ursa Major, Wagner was teamed up with fellow guitarist Steve Hunter to back Lou Reed. Wagner can be heard on both Rock 'n' Roll Animal and Sally Can't Dance.
After moving on from Reed's group, Wagner began what would be the most successful phase of his career, playing guitar for and writing songs with Alice Cooper. Wagner joined Cooper in 1975 and they co-wrote the title track for his best-selling album Welcome to My Nightmare. A single of the song was a Top 50 success. Wagner and Cooper would team up for the hugely successful Only Women Bleed, which just missed the Top 10 in the spring of '75. They also wrote 播放Department of Youth and 播放I Never Cry, which went gold in the summer of 1976.
Wagner, who was joined on guitar by his old Reed pal Steve Hunter, worked with Cooper through most of the rest of the '70s, collaborating on hits like 播放You and Me and 播放How You Gonna See Me Now as well as other popular album tracks. He also used his experience in the studio to work with Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad on some of his solo ventures.
In the late '80s, Wagner teamed with Bob Ezrin, who produced many of Alice Cooper's most successful records, overseeing the debut album of the much-touted New York City band, The Throbs. The project, The Language of Thieves and Vagabonds, issued by Geffen Records, got some good reviews but the band was unable to deliver the same power in their live performances and soon broke up.
While Wagner may be a good example of the talented sideman who helps other performers build their careers, he was also a strong leader, as his work with Ursa Major demonstrates.

1979:Highway To Hell de AC DC.
1982:The Number of the Beast de Iron Maiden.
1983:Metal Health de Quiet Riot, pero ese año hubieron muchos buenos albums: Bark at the Moon de Ozzy Osbourne, Kill 'em All de Metallica, Show No Mercy de Slayer, Pyromania de Def Leppard, Shout at the Devil de Motley Crue y muchos otros.
    1984:Stay Hungry de Twisted Sister.
1985:Theater of Pain de Motley Crue.
Y tal vez Slippery When Wet de Bon Jovi.
1987:Appetite For Destruction de Guns and Roses.
    1989:Dr. Feelgoodde Motley Crue.
    1990:Rust in Peace de Megadeth.
    1991:Metallica de Metallica.
    1992:Countdown To Extinction de Megadeth

Y por ahora hasta ahí lo dejo.

i'm one of those stubborn jerks that's been on here for a while and never reset my lib. if you're at all curious as to what i was listening to before weekly charts started being compiled (i know you are!), i've discovered the first hundred or so pages of my "recently added" list are what i was listening to between april 04 and jan 05 (even though they're all listed as feb 05). this should get you close, but the back gets pushed back further with each subsequent present-day listen (duh).

why do i do this? because that was a point when i listened to more music. between 05 and 08 i hardly scrobbled at all. then after that, i started scrobbling my ipod listens and the bottom fell out. this milestone thing here makes a good visual aid (note that the first displayable track is 3000):

This is just a list I've been adding to (and not taking away from) for ages now, of bands I've decided at the time deserved a place on it. Looking at some of them now, there are a few I hardly like at all any more, so it's not 100% representative of my taste, but neither are my overall charts. Perhaps they balance eachother.
