1932年十一月出生于伦敦的近郊，父母都是在医院从事看护的专业人员，不过都有著歌唱的天赋，她的父亲还曾经做过明星梦。承袭自父母的天生美好歌喉，使得她从三岁起就开始跟母亲一起在教堂里歌唱。发现女儿歌唱才华的父亲，决心扶植她来实现自己未能达成的美梦，於是在她九岁那年，透过关系，安排小佩屈拉去参加BBC的一个现场广播节目。当时正是大战期间，在排练的时候，忽然响起了空袭警报，观众立刻一阵慌乱。节目的制作人赶快问现场有没有人愿意上台歌唱，来安抚观众。佩屈拉自告奋勇的登台，果然成功的让大众安定下来。就这样，她成了节目的常客。
　　1964年，在先后有许多支单曲轰动法国之后，她的唱片制作人汤尼海奇（Tony Hatch）带著一堆自己写的歌曲来找她，并且建议她，应该可以再度尝试用英语来灌录唱片了。佩屈拉克拉克回答说，她愿意回到英国发展，但前提是必须要先找到合适的歌曲。在她跑到厨房去泡茶来招待客人的时候，汤尼海奇随手在钢琴上弹奏了一段自己刚刚谱出来的旋律，她在厨房里听到了，立刻冲出来，问汤尼那是什么歌曲。汤尼表示，那首歌叫做「Downtown」，但是还没有歌词。佩屈拉说，那首歌曲很棒，假如汤尼可以写出相配的歌词，她愿意灌录，并且藉以回到英国歌坛。

　　这首歌曲录制完成后，先是在英国推出，得到了第二名，接著又进军美国市场。过去，从1951到 1962年间，早已在英国、澳洲、加拿大以及欧洲各地都相当有知名度的佩屈拉克拉克，曾经在美国推出过好些单曲，但是都不太成功。「Downtown」的推出，改变了一切。1964年的十二月十九日，这首歌第一次打进美国排行，获得第八十七名，随即开始急速的往上窜升，五个星期后，就在1965年的一月二十三日，夺得了美国的冠军，蝉联两周，使她成为摇滚年代以来第一个夺得美国冠军的英国女歌手。

    For anyone who is interested, EMI release on 23 April 2012 'Completely Cilla: 1963-1973' - a 5CD boxset of material by the British pop singer Cilla Black who began her career alongside The Beatles in Liverpool during the 1960s. Cilla went on to chart 18 Top 40 singles during that decade and toured across the world with many of the other sixties greats. The new set contains 139 recordings all produced by George Martin (the man behind The Beatles' hits) and comes with a bonus Region 0 / NTSC DVD of many previously unreleased BBC TV music performances.

    why is 'things go better with coke' such a popular song in the 'last 6 months' and has quite a lot of plays? I've never heard of it and can't find any places to find it apart from one site where it is on ONE vinyl and that's it. I can't even find a cd it is on. Find that strange. I would love to find it, but can't find a place to hear it :/
