Basically, OLP's not my favourite band because they are creative, they're my favourite band because I enjoy listening to their music. The fact that they have incredibly creative songs like 'The Wonderful Future' (my 2nd most listened to OLP track according to lastFM), and 'Annie' , makes me love them even more. Matt Good's "Flight Recorder From Viking 7" is one of the most creative songs I know of, and "Everything is Automatic" is something any alternative band could do. I would still rather listen to Everything is Automatic all day than Flight Recorder. I didn't lose respect for Matt Good because Everything is Automatic happened to be accessible to the radio, it's actually one of my favourite songs and I love them for making it. I encourage creativity and abstractness, but I don't discourage the writing of more accessible music, especially if they turn out to be my favourite songs of all time (as in the case of OLP and Matt Good).

I'm glad they recorded gravity because it's my favourite album. Often I wake up craving to listen to Raine singing "i HOLD on ... i HOOOOOLLLD on" from Gravity's 'Sell my soul' .. I can't get enough of it. In 'Story about a girl' when he sings "i'll ALWYAS, OOOOOLLWAYS be there" , I can listen to that forever. Raine is the only person that can do that. I really hope OLP makes more songs like these because I love them, and none of the other 'typical generic' alternative bands can create the same effect as Raine does in those songs. I also hope that they make more creative songs like 'The Wonderful Future' , but I don't discourage them from making more generic songs like 'Life' and 'Love & Trust.' Whether or not they PUSPOSELY reduced their abstractness for popularity here is debatable. Maybe you're right, but Gravity's 'Bring back the sun' is one of their most creative works, both musically and lyrically, and it wouldn't have made it far on the charts had it been released.

@Suthy, I 100% agree. I'd even say OLP's first four have a great cross between accessibility and originality. It was just the right cross between pop hooks and creativity. After that, they ditched the creativity and relied on just the hooks (albeit recycled, more generic hooks).

the year is 2029, the machines will convince us that they are conscious, that they have their own agenda worthy of our respect, they'll embody human qualities and claim to be human, and we'll believe them.

@negrowallace - In the sense that hooks and harmony have the potential to override something a little more challenging, you're right, sometimes accessibility is wonderful. Case in point, a record like Annie's "Anniemal" manages to straddle that line between accessibility and originality. The difference, though, between that record or, say, a band like The Weakerthans, is that there's still that sense of originality; they don't sound derivative. It does not matter how many dollars or how many fans garbage reels you in, compromising your artistic integrity is never, ever, ever acceptable. Listen to crap, I don't care. However, please don't claim ditching creativity for popularity should be applauded.

I think Nickelback's a good band not BECAUSE they're popular, rather, they are popular BECAUSE they are good. But theres lots of amazing music that doesnt get popular often because people arent used to it and find it boring the first time they hear it - it took me ages to connect with Matt Good's music, but he's now one of my favourites. i LOVE many unconventional, creative & esoteric songs, but I don't listen to music JUST because it's unconventional & unique - I listen to it because I enjoy the pleasure I gain when listening to it. If it's unique, that's a bonus. Just because Gravity wasn't as unconventional as some of their other work, doesn't mean it wasn't good music. I find myself listening to Gravity more than anything else, it got me loving them again, and I'm glad that they now have some songs that I can play at parties without boring the people that haven't had a chance to develop an appreciation for their more unconventioanl stuff. In that light, I wouldn't call it a misstep

Lol @ negrowallace. By your logic, Nickelback is the greatest band in the world, since apparently popularity is everything. In terms of commercial success, Gravity wasn't a misstep. Creatively, it's garbage. Do I like it? It's more of a guilty pleasure that I probably wouldn't listen to if it wasn't OLP. But just because people like something doesn't make it good. Gravity WAS A MISSTEP. If it marked the decline of of creativity and the dumbing down of lyrics and musicianship, it was a misstep. Sure, Healthy and Burn Burn have songs that show the band is attempting to get back on a creative path (along with other songs that make me hang my head in disappointment), but they haven't really been able to put out good songs consistantly ever since Gravity's release. And you talk about the commercial failure of Spiritual Machines? The album didn't get the accolades it deserved because creative decisions like the R.K. excerpts and the increasingly artistic, unconventional songs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_Peace_discography Every album made it to the top 3 in Canada except for Spiritual Machines. I'm not saying I don't like your taste of music (in fact 'The Wonderful Future' is one of my favourite songs of all time), I'm just saying that your opinion isn't representative of what the rest of the world... in fact it's quite diametric. So stop making these glib statements like "gravity was without a doubt, the biggest misstep in this band's career"

KnightsofRound: Grow up. Not everyone has the same taste in music. Gravity is my favourite OLP album. And before that Clumsy was my favourite album by ANY artist, and OLP was my favourite band way before their change in direction. You say: "gravity was without a doubt, the biggest misstep in this band's career." Scroll up and count the number of top tracks from each album. Out of 15, gravity has 6 and Spiritual Machines has 1. Gravity wasn't a "misstep" in their career, it actually helped them gain popularity. Look at each album's peak chart positions, Spiritual Machines looks like it did the worst.

I guess I'll elaborate on that a little... basically, the last thing i'd ever expect a band to create after making something as good as spiritual machines would be to make an album like gravity. it makes me sad thinking about the direction OLP could have and probably WOULD have gone in if spiritual machines was a massive success. gravity was without a doubt, the biggest misstep in this band's career. the commercial failure of spiritual machines was an obvious reason for the band making more commercially accessible radio-friendly music, but they also gave up a career path that could have led to some incredibly amazing things. I'm just glad they seem to be getting themselves re-aligned again, hopefully they tread the more experimental waters again... they're long overdue for it. maybe playing spiritual machines live in its entirety as well as being independent now will re-spark their heightened artistic creativity.

honestly, burn burn doesn't deserve to even be mentioned in the same sentence as gravity. I can respect someone's opinion for not liking burn burn that much but it along with healthy were both significant improvements over gravity imo. every time I listen to spiritual machines I get sad that gravity even exists.
