  • Another Year Over...and What Exactly Did I Listen to?

    2009年 12月 31日, 1:06 作者:Porpentina

For me, 2009 was a year of glamorously hard rocking punky sleazy metallic goodness - as my top 10 of the last 12 months neatly illustrates. That's not the whole truth though. During this year I've also rediscovered my love for extreme metal and, on the other hand, listened to more mainstream pop than probably ever before (or, since the infamous Spice Girls fan days of my childhood :P).

  • I JUST SHAVED MY PUBES

    2009年 12月 26日, 23:01 作者:Nonclique343

The top of my pubes anyway, I just trimmed the lower parts, it's weird having raw skin where there once was hair, but I think it looks good, I put some vaseline on the skin, there were some cuts but I always seem to cut myself shaving anywhere.

  • Morrissey Kicks the Dolls

    2009年 12月 11日, 9:58 作者:pashernatelover

Oh. My. Fuck. I saw Morrissey tonight at the Gibson Amphitheater and the show was AMAZING! The opening band was incomparably good and blew every other band I have seen open for him clear out of the water... yes, even Nancy Sinatra. They were called Doll And The Kicks and they were PHENOMENAL. The lead singer was a female Jack Fairy character...also a marionette. It was amazing to watch, the music was suuuuper glam era sounding and they shut all of the whiny Morrissey fans up and made us all actually give a listen. It helps that they have a great band name design that was projected behind them with neat moving gobos and really saturated colors, look great in purple. I liked them so much I waited through the death mosh at the end to get a CD (while the masses fought over T-shirts) and actually found them and got it signed! Go me! Great CD, I applaud Morrissey on this find.

After Doll And The Kicks went off began the traditional video clip time, where Morrissey shows us a warm up for his brilliance. I was trying to think of the videos as glamorous while they were playing, but I realized that no... although some had their glamour it was something else he was going for, and then it hit me: camp. They were pretty freaking campy video clips. A song about a pet bear and a Tom Jones wannabe? An amazing interview with Lou Reed and a German clip of the New York Dolls? Ending on a bizarre monologue by a woman in front of a sequined curtain that went crazy and screamed as a spotlight focused in on her face? The curtain fell, the band dramatically and the deal was sealed for me, it was going to be one campy night.

This Charming Man started and the crowd went wild-- almost lost my voice then and there, but there was so much more to come! The lights were flashy, the band was spot on and Morrissey was so damn charming. The gong solo was also pretty damn epic. And, of course, as soon as his top came off the crowd went wild. 50 and still gorgeous *melt*. Over all, tons of Smiths songs were played (播放How Soon Is Now, 播放Cemetry Gates, Death at One's Elbow, others...), a lot of B-Sides were played (播放Teenage Dad On His Estate, 播放Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice) , he sweetly went to the audience and let them give shout outs and fork over the gifts they had so thoughtfully brought. Great exchange: Fan:-"I want you, I need you, I love you" Morrissey- You'll get over it. Gah, there just aren't words to describe how captivating and spectacular Morrissey is, there really aren't. Best part: Morrissey: "Lamenting policewomen, policemen, silly women, taxmen" the audience screams "Uniformed whores!" Morrissey: "I know!"

Long and short of it is: only one thing could have possibly been better than tonight: 1980s Morrissey and 1980s Danzig oiled up and wrestling... and the winner gets to take me to Italy for gelato. Hey, a girl can dream...

  • Top 50 from the last twelve months.

    2009年 12月 4日, 14:14 作者:Kiine

    1. How did you get into 29? (Don Dokken)
Well, I've been into Dokken for like, forever. So it was just a matter of time before I checked out his solo stuff. Usually, I don't really dig the solocareers of singers from bands I love. (The only exception being U.D.O.), but this really hit med hard. 播放Living a Lie is my alltime favorite tune now.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (The Carburetors)
Eighter Burnout or Fast Forward Rock N' Roll, but I'm not quite sure.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33? (Social Distortion)
    Don't Take Me For Granted!

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? (Nasty Idols)
Cruel Intensions kicks ass. But Vicious gets a big thumb up for 播放Head's down (in tinseltown)

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Loudness)
I actually don't own a single cd by them, embarrasing enough. I have four LP's though. That's something.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (White Lion)
I have to go with the chliche. Broken Heart is beautiful!

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Madam X)
    Not even close!

    8. What is your favorite album by 15? (Ozzy Osbourne)
Bark at the Moon and Blizzard of Ozz, I think.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Volbeat)
Omg, hard one. All time I guess it's 播放Caroline Leaving and 播放I Only Wanna Be With You. Atm it's 播放We. Amazing!

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (CRASHDïET)
Even though I'm starting to get abit tired of them after all these years, I can't deny the fact that I light up abit every time I hear a song from Rest in Sleaze. A couple of the songs off of The Unattractive Revolution also. Oh, the memories I have with that band. They will always have a special place in my heart.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Aerosmith)
Oh, I don't think I have a favourite Aerosmith album to be perfectly honest. They have amazing songs on every single one, but I don't have a record I like better than the other ones.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Firehouse)
播放Don't Walk Away. Just because that song has ment SO much to me... There's no song in the history of man that has made me cry that hard.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (The Quireboys)
Reminds me of the good ol' days when Sleaze Nights used to be at Club Maiden, Nancy still were a part of the Sleaze Rock Pistoleros. and we were about 10 people there. Off course, I think it's awesome for them that they've gotten a better (and bigger) club to play at, and that there's now like 80/90 people there on good days.. But I kinda miss the old days when there wasn't that many of us. Dancin to 播放Sex Party on the barstooles with Stony will always be one of my favorite things!

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Manowar)
All Men Play on 10, and 播放Metal Daze

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (AC/DC)
Can you be anything BUT happy when listening to AC/DC?

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (The Hellacopters)
    Six or seven, not sure.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Tokyo Blade)
播放Night Of The Blade, I believe it was.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (W.A.S.P.)
The Crimson Idol (!!!!!!!!!). I also love Helldorado, but that one is not even close.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (KISS)
Ace Frehley is my favorite member of all time.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Hanoi Rocks)
    Yes, I have :)

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Stryper)
I don't really have that many memories involving Stryper, mostly because this is a band I usually get picked on for liking.. Haha.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Skid Row)
Omg. That's a tuff one. Both Skid Row and Slave to the Grind are flawless albums. So I'll just go with my most played songs from each album. Sweet Little Sister and 播放Livin' on a Chain Gang.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Wolf)
I was visiting some friends in Sweden, and they put on the Ravenous album. The opening tune being 播放Speed On. I fell in love after ten seconds, and could'nt BELIEVE I'd missed this band for such a long time.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Metallica)
    Kill'em All.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Poison)
Life Goes On. Kinda tired of this band also, actually.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (The Dogs D'Amour)
播放Drunk Like Me. Actually a "bad" song to start with because it's very different from all their other stuff, but luckily for me I was one of those people who just started loving them even more when listening to the rest of their songs. Drunk Like Me is now one of my least favorite songs by them, and I REALLY loved it the first time I heard it.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Dokken)
    Back for the Attack.
Tooth and Nail is a strong runner up.

    28. What is you favorite song by 24? (Motörhead)
Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me. I mean, srlsy. If that song dosn't hit you right in the heart you're not human.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Def Leppard)
    播放Love Bites, I guess.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Hardcore Superstar)
    Standin' on the Verge.
I now realize that almost every favorite I have is a ballad. Wellwell.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Backyard Babies)
5, going to be 6 next year.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (London)
A few. Hit And Run Lover, Drop The Bomb, Fast As Light.

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Keel)
    Lay Down the Law

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Misfits)
    Don't be silly.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Alice Cooper)
The same as everyone else I assume, 播放Poison.

    36. What is you favorite album by 48? (New York Dolls)
    New York Dolls

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (L.A. Guns)
I've actually been so lucky that I've seen them once with Phil Lewis. I've seen them another time also, but in my opinion it's not really L.A. Guns unless Phil is the one doing the singing.

    38. What is you favorite song by 36? (Annihilator)
Snake in the Grass and Bats in the Belfry.

Way Out West 2008. Gothenburg, August 8

When me and my girlfriend had seen Roky Erickson for the first time last winter I told her "Now we have seen 4 of the greatest 60's/early 70's garage bands, Roky, The Stooges, MC5 and New York Dolls... it's only The Sonics left to make the list complete". At that time I didn't even know the Sonics were playing again. When I heard that they were going to play the Way Out West festival I was very surprised. If someone would have told me that I was going to see any of those bands 5 years ago I would have thought they were joking...

    The Sonics

In 1964-65 when The Sonics released their first records they were way ahead of their time, the music was raw, aggressive and distorted. With songs like 播放Psycho, 播放The Witch, 播放Strychnine, 播放The Hustler and 播放Boss Hoss and Jerry Roslie's wild screams they pretty much invented punk rock 12 years too early.

But the question was if they could recreate all that energy 40 years later... They still had most of the energy and the screams were still there. They played most of the songs from their two first albums from 1966, the songs I mentioned earlier and their cool covers of 播放Have Love Will Travel, 播放Money, 播放Walking the Dog and a few rock n' roll standards. All in all it was a great show, they seemed to be having lots of fun and happy to be playing festivals were most people wasn't even born when they started out. They even joked about how they used to party with the audience parents back in the day...

    Grinderman

Next up was Grinderman. I have seen Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds a couple of times before and was looking forward to see Nick Cave make noise with Grinderman. I think the Grinderman album is the best thing Nick has released in years. Like the album, the concert was noisy and aggressive reminding more of Cave's earlier band The Birthday Party and his first solo albums than the latter day Bad Seeds albums. The only downside was since they have only released one album they played every song from it and not all songs are as great as Depth Charge Ethel, Set Me Free, Electric Alice, Honey Bee and Man In The Moon... but Nick made up for the lesser songs by being the great frontman he is.

    Nick Cave - Grinderman

They also played the Bad Seeds classic 播放Tupelo and the new song Dream that sounded very good too. It would have been very cool to see them do a couple of old Birthday Party songs like Nick the Stripper or Release the Bats and 播放From Her To Eternity or Saint Huck from his first solo album... Another great show.
I would love to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds again some time soon too, it was 2001 or 2002 the last time and it was one of the best concerts I've seen...

    Broder Daniel

To end the night Broder Daniel played their last show ever as a tribute to their guitar player Anders Göthberg who passed away earlier this year. It was a very emotional concert experience even if I have seen better BD shows musically. I hadn't listened that much to them the last year or so and had almost forgot how much I love them. To be honest few bands/artist affect me like BD, Henrik Berggren wear his heart on his sleeve and write such simple, powerful and honest lyrics. I found myself standing with my arm in the air and singing along to every word...

    Henrik Berggren - Broder Daniel

Some of the highlights were 播放Sorrow, 播放Work, the rarity 播放Lemon, 播放I'll Be Gone, What's Good, 播放Shoreline, 播放Old in Just One Day and of course 播放When We Were Winning... and the all new song Hold On To Your Dreams was great too. The only song I really missed from the set was 播放Luke Skywalker... and it would have been great to hear the long acoustic version of When We Were Winning live atleast once before they quit.

It was completely, completely wonderful and a worthy ending to one of the best and most important swedish bands ever. Along with Bruce Springsteen and Roky Erickson this was the best concert of the summer for me.

New York Dolls - New York Dolls (1973)

It's difficult writing down thoughts on albums that are older than you and that many class as a classic album. To me it's new and I can't help but reference things that have come since... having said that the New York Dolls sound like the missing link between the Rolling Stones and the yet to be formed Ramones with their rough, noisy sound.

It's an interesting album that I may, at some point add to my collection but there are others that take precident. 3/5

  • WFMU Record Fair: Wait, how much did I just spend?

    2009年 10月 25日, 21:30 作者:rhandofnixon

I was already nearly broke when I went in to this thing, but some expenses are necessary. It'll take me weeks, I'm sure, to get through all this stuff I found:

    - The original vinyl pressing of Glenn Branca's The Ascension (!). This now officially takes over as the best thing in my collection, I think.

    - The Clash's first album, UK version, in mint condition

    - The original pressing of the first New York Dolls album

    - The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl

    - The Nov. 22/Meet the Creeper 7" single by Destroy All Monsters

    - A couple old EPs by Archers of Loaf: The Loaf's Revenge, and the spectacular "South Carolina"

    - A surprisingly good EP by Refrigerator that is either called "Songs with a Story" or "Music for Bugs", I'm not sure

    - Other singles & EPs: Rites of Spring, Fever Ray, Yoko Ono, 3 by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Elvis Costello and a bunch more

    - LPs of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, Atomizer, Labour Of Lust (which I got a pretty sidelong glance from this guy for buying), The Dock of the Bay, Electric Ladyland

    - A shitload of CDs

    Yikes.
