This band is simply unbelievable. I'm getting their live DVD Okonokos on Netflix as soon as possible. This is the best thing to come out of Kentucky since KFC.

If anything, the songs featured on Evil Urges are more tightly focused because all of the reverberation has been stripped back for a more live, immediate sound. Therefore, the songwriting emerges to the forefront. Evil Urges is abundant with some of Jim James' finest songs yet and some of his most elastic vocal performances on record. Z appears transitional in hindsight, in spite of its greatness. Evil Urges is the fullest realization of My Morning Jacket's capabilities and it demonstrates the band's willingness to explore as genre-defying innovators, rather than continue to be typecast as this Southern psychedelic, alt-country jam-band. The band pushes its sound without being self-conscious or didactic about it. Evil Urges is a logical extension on many of the ideas contained on Z, and yet the people who love Z hate this album. It doesn't make sense.

Pitchfork LIKED Z, but they weren't overly impressed by it either. The way people are treating Evil Urges simply isn't fair, period. Just because Evil Urges wasn't up to your personal tastes, writing it off as "awful" because it's not the album you wanted My Morning Jacket to make is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, but like I've told you, I don't believe you at all. Therefore, I'm not changing my mind. It sounds like you drew a summary of all the negative reviews you read and have it ingrained in your head that Evil Urges is therefore a mediocre album, when it's not at all. Evil Urges really isn't all that different from My Morning Jacket's previous work. Just more eclectic, spontaneous and confident. There is nothing forced about songs as polarizing as "Highly Suspicious." I just think you lack the sense of humor to appreciate what they've done with this album. But then again, I didn't realize you don't view Z as favorably either. Thus, now I feel you just don't like change. You're only cheating yourself. I can't stand it when people want the same album over and over again. My Morning Jacket aren't going to make At Dawn or It Still Moves ever again. People need to get over that shit, seriously, and stop hating subsequent releases just for having a more evolved sound.

yes their old stuff was great. Z is one of (if not THE) the best albums of the decade. EU is full of great songs. musical genres are not racially bound. cheesiness and piousness? sounds like a philosophical issue. forced moments? name one.

hotterthan: p4k has nothing to do with it. they liked Z which i pretty much was sour on. i don't mind at all bands changing their sounds and trying something new, but 1. mmj was just so great at the lonesome, midnight in a barn silo southern-tinged rock and 2. regardless of that, Evil Urges just didn't deliver on good songs. i don't like the cheesiness and forced moments and white-boy funk and over-the-top piousness of Evil Urges (and to a lesser extent Z), and those are my personal reasons, p4k has nothing to do with it. there's been scores of times i've disagreed with them. so you don't go putting words in MY mouth, plz.

As for the rest of the people who hate Evil Urges, I bet that when it gets reappraised by Pitchfork (if it's still around...) 10 years from now as an overlooked classic, they'll say the same thing.

Because like I told him before, it's because Pitchfork detested it. People are psychologically influenced by negative or positive reviews. Pitchfork just happens to command much more influence than other review sources. Otherwise, I have no reason to think differently. Evil Urges is the most rounded, diverse and accomplished album My Morning Jacket has recorded. It's the defiant work of a band that refuses to be pigeonholed as one particular sound, as people insist of giving them that tired neo-psychedelia tag. The band simply, and rightfully, got tired of that.

How am I being contrary? I've always claimed Evil Urges as My Morning Jacket's best album and I stand by that as of 12/13/09. Don't go putting words in mouth as I've never claimed that my opinion is the only correct one. True enough, it usually works out in my favor, but I'm not as arrogant as one might think. I just know what I'm talking about and believe in what I'm saying. Your opinions, especially when they are critical, suggest a close-minded person who is resistant to a great band changing its sound. Your dislike for Evil Urges is, to me, unjustified. It honestly seems like you hate everything I love or someone else loves just to play devil's advocate. I don't believe there's been a single thing we've agreed upon.
