  • MISERY INDEX: Prepare To Enter The Studio

Baltimore, MD’s Misery Index has spent their recent time away from the road writing for their follow-up album to 2008’s Traitors. The band will begin recording in early January with engineer Steve Wright at Wright Way Studios (Dying Fetus, Slipknot, Mos Def). The album’s tentative title is Heirs To Thievery and advance song titles include “Embracing Extinction”, “Heirs To Thievery”, “Fed To The Wolves”, and “Sleeping Giants”. A May 2010 release date is expected.

Misery Index’s Jason Netherton commented on the album’s lyrical theme via his Demockery blog: “The thread that binds several songs lyrically surrounds ideas of hidden history, how we interpret our nation, and our idea of who we are culturally and collectively, as it is generally handed down to us in terms of icons, wars, struggles and triumph.”

Misery Index has recently announced the dates for an Australian and New Zealand tour next spring. This tour will kick-off in early April and also include Decapitated, Psycroptic, and Origin. A listing of confirmed tour dates and cities can be found below with more details to be announced soon.

    TOP TEN 2009

Das war schwer dieses Jahr! Hier sind sie...

    10. Captain Planet - Inselwissen

"Wo ist die Handbremse? Ach es gibt keine? Okay, dann gib Gas!"

    09. Volcano Choir - Unmap

    "Silence is the new loud!"

    08. Portugal. The Man - The Majestic Majesty

"No, not the country. The man!"

    07. Juliette Lewis - Terra Incognito

    "You made my shitlist!"
And now you made my top 10 list! Damn! Der Opener "Noche Sin Fin" hat mich komplett überfahren. Dicke Scheibe!

    06. Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up

"Some people wanna speed it up - in fact i wanna slow it down!"

    05. Glen Porter - Falling Down

    "..."

    04. We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

"And it's thunder and it's lighting!"

    03. Fat Freddy's Drop - Dr. Boondigga and The Big BW

"Gotta know what you're runnin' from before you know where you runnin' to.

    02. Mos Def - The Ecstatic

    "Booooooogieman!"

    01. Max Herre - Ein Geschenkter Tag

    "Blick nach vorn!"
Ach was soll ich sagen?

This year's batch of top albums was a bit difficult to compile for me. Not to say 2009 was a terrible year in music, it wasn't - but it also wasn't anything astounding either. That being said -- here's my list. Love it, hate it, argue with it. Color me apathetic. :)

The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death
Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect
Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Lining
    Mastodon - Crack the Skye
A Day to Remember - Homesick
    Wale - Attention Defecit
Bat for Lashes - Two Suns
Animals as Leaders - Animals as Leaders
Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
    Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Raekwon - Only Built for Cuban Linx... Pt. II
The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above and Branches Below
As Tall as Lions - You Can't Take it With You
    mewithoutYou - It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright
    Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
    Isis - The Wavering Radiant
    Thrice - Beggars
    Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
    Gallows - Grey Britain

    Honorable Mentions:
30 Seconds to Mars - This is War
Kid Cudi - The Man on the Moon: End of Day
    The Appleseed Cast - Sagarmatha
    Drake - So Far Down

Worst Thing to Break Out in 2009:
    Lady GaGa

    Seriously. Fuck her.

Like last year, there's a lot of new music out there that I didn't get a chance to check out. C'est la vie.

  • 2009 lists, yo.

2009. A.k.a the year of the Ox, a.k.a Animal Collective Vs. Grizzly Bear. 2009 was filled with albums teetering on the low nine mark. It’s been an almost perfect end to the decade, minus the sad, sad news about The Shins.

There might be random albums I haven't wrote about but I'm tired, bored and sick of this list now.

So here it is: Top Albums Of 2009. In Ol' Pitchfork fashion I've rated them, for your pleasure ;)

    30. Wild Beasts - Two Dancers 8.1

The first of only two English artists on the entire list. Arh, well. First heard of these couple o' years back when they wasn't that good. Didn't expect they'd release an album like this. Outstanding.

    29. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career 8.3

Catchy. As. Fuck. Is all I have to say about this album. Oh and it's probably their best album to date.

    28. St. Vincent - Actor 8.1

This is such a godamn brilliant album, but I can't stress enough how much more amazing her debut is compared to this.

    27. Woods - Songs Of Shame 8.2

Was put off by this album for a while after listening to Wavves and hearing it was similar. But, Woods is good!

    26. Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue 8.3

    25. Dodos- Time To Die 8.0

    24. Taken By Trees - East Of Eden 8.0

    23. Dan Deacon - Bromst 8.2

    22. Built to Spill - There Is No Enemy 8.2

21.Bill Callahan - Sometimes I wish We Were An Eagle 8.3

It’s always fun to make up words, that’s why Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle is so good. Callahan and his country, folky heart is on display from the very first song right to the very end.

    20. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns 8.3

Disappointingly not as weird as you’d think in real life, Natasha Khan’s at the peak of her creativeness in Two Suns. The lead off song, Daniel is one of the greatest songs of the decade. The album flows naturally, from one potential single to the next.

    19. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca 8.1

Admittedly, I find any pre-Bitte Orca DP album unlistenable, but both instrumentally and vocally, this is one of the most well crafted albums of 2009. Up there with Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest, this is Dirty Projector’s breakthrough album.

    18. Mos Def - The Ecstatic 8.2

Mos Def - Everyone’s favourite black guy, after Morgan Freeman, obviously. Ecstatically sample heavy, this album has already become my favourite rap album. Fuck you, Jay Z.

    17. Beirut - March Of The Zapotec/Realpeople Holland 8.3

The guy with the most unfortunate name in music makes the list with another beautiful release. Here’s to hoping Zach Condon makes more music under the moniker of Realpeople.

    16. The Love Language - The Love Language 8.5

New lo-fi band. But not just any lo-fi band. They don't purposefully make that annoying fuzzy noise that sounds like you're listening to an almost out of range radio station like dicks (looking at you Wavves). Not just that but half of the songs on this, their debut album, are amazing.

    15. Fiery Furnaces - I’m Going Away 8.4

Fiery Furnaces playing… non fucked up music? Huh? What’s up with that shit? This is the most down to earth Fiery Furnaces have ever been. And before listening to this I already knew it wouldn’t be better than their groundbreaking album Blueberry Boat (2004), which was a masterpiece. And how they were gonna follow up Widow City (2007) was beyond me. But this was the last thing I expected.

    14. Various Artists - Dark Was The Night 8.9

This beast of a compilation was produced by that National guy. Every track on the comp has the potential to be the listeners’ favourite song. My personal favourite is Tightrope by Yeasayer. No track from Wavves though, unfortunately.

    13. Girls - Album 8.5

Debut album by four guys from New York. They aren't girls so don't do what I did and expect some lush female vocals because you'll just be dissappionted when you hear a guy moan about not having a boyfriend, pizza or wine. But then turned around 'cos it is actually pretty good. Then after a few more listens it'll be the only thing you'll be listening to. Mega, mega grower, much like that new Wavves album.

    12. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Advanced Based Battery Life/ Vs. Children 8.8/7.9

Owen Ashworth - The King of Lo-Fi? No. That title blates belongs to Wavves. But still, after releasing two terrific albums this year, you gotta hand it to CFTPA’s Owen Ashworth. Nothing ground breaking, just more genuine heartfelt ultra-indie. In my opinion Advanced Based Battery Life is his best collection of songs.

    11. YACHT - See Mystery Lights 8.5

More trippy hippy madness. YACHT, now a duo as opposed to the moniker of single man, Jonathan Warren Bechtolt, have made the best dance album of the year.

    10. JJ - JJ No.2 8.6

You just saw the cover, right? You’re gonna skip this one, right? Wait, wait, this one isn’t about popping caps in bitches. Okay, it’s about drugs, but still. Despite clocking in at a lazy 26 minutes it‘s one of the most compelling albums of the year. It’s a mini masterpiece. DO NOT do what I did and judge this beautiful album by it’s cover and refuse to download it for several months until your friend has told you for the 100th time to stop being so stubborn and get it.

    9. Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer 8.7

Spencer Krug’s “side project” is quickly becoming his main band, having released four Sunset Rubdown albums within the time of just two Wolf Parade albums. Not only that, but SR is arguably better than WP. With Dragonslayer, it picks up where Random Spirit Lover (2007) left off, only not as over-produced. The albums share the same themes and even have sequels. Personally, I think it improves upon Random Spirit Lover. Although not being as good as the Wolf Parade albums or the first two SR records, Dragonslayer is a terrific and captivating album.

    8. Gui Boratto - Take My Breath Away 8.8

    7. Why? - Eskimo Snow 9.1

So there’s no rapping whatsoever on the album. So what? Get over it. Although many Why? Fans would disagree, I think this is their best album and by far the most atmospheric. And is it just me or does anybody else think it sounds Christmassy?

    6. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest 8.8

No surprises here. A massive step up from 2006’s Yellow House (that’s not to say Yellow House wasn’t immense)

    5. Karen O and the Kids - Where The Wild Things Are 9.0

A beautiful album to coincide a beautiful film. One of the greatest albums of the year to soundtrack one of the greatest films of the year. The best thing about this is that it doesn’t sound like just another film score, it sounds like a fully thought out album… and maybe what Fever To Tell (2003) would sound like if Yeah Yeah Yeahs weren’t so aggressive. The Kids include members from Liars, Atlas Sound, YYYs, The Dead Weather (Although TDW are shit if you ask me) and more.

    4. Fever Ray - Fever Ray 9.0

Karin Dreijer Andersson has now totally dumped what made people notice her. Her sunny electronic bleeps and bloops with the knife were nowhere to be seen in Silent Shout (2006), And now her debut under the moniker Fever Ray isn’t only rid of summer anthems but shot of any real emotion. Okay, that sounds bleak and unlistenable but Fever Ray is a great, cohesive album and better than any album by The Knife excluding Silent Shout. And the music videos are incredible.

    3. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion 9.1

I could write about this album forever, the hype behind it, the haters, the lovers, why people consider it to be one of the best of the decade, but all I’m gonna say is - Listen to it! I’d probably class MPP as a masterpiece if the three albums preceding it weren’t better.

    2. The Flaming Lips - Embryonic 9.3

Less commercial than their mega-disappointing last effort, three years later and they’ve returned with their third masterpiece. Granted, it comes in 3rd place awarding Yoshimi(2002) 2nd place and The Soft Bulletin 1st, but still, that’s a tremendous feat. Embryonic is a lot darker than anything they’ve done and a sound more deeper than anything else. You’ll be sucked in to the Flips universe yet again as soon as you hear the super catchy Convinced Of The Hex. Oh, and it’s a double CD. Wayne Coyne is God.

    1. Swan Lake - Enemy Mine 9.4

Dan Bajar’s poetic verses, Spencer Krug’s haunting melodies and Carey Mercer’s majestic yelps all secure Enemy Mine as the finest album of 2009. A masterpiece that includes Bejar and Carey’s best work. Not only that but it’s also a huge surprise taking their shockingly unpleasant, all-over-the-place debut into consideration.

  • BEST OF 2009, PT.3: ALBUMS OF THE YEAR

2009 was a thoroughly enjoyable and varied year for music. The albums we liked the most this year are as follows:

    1. Fever Ray: Fever Ray
Back in January we were sure that this year was going to be all about Animal Collective. Boy were we wrong. Hands down, no contest, album of the year. Best live act. Awesome remixes. Most amazing videos. If she had a heart she would have given others a chance!
If I Had A Heart

    2. Telepathe: Dance Mother
I feel we're kinda alone in loving this record among our lo-fi-beach-pop-loving fellow bloggers. But who cares. The band's mixed bag of pop, electronic, shoegaze, hip-hop and dance music sounds incredibly fresh and we just can't seem to tire of it. I think a part of the problem was that it leaked so early that, by the end of 2008, it was already out of people's minds. Plus people love to diss anything coming from Brooklyn.
In Your Line

    3. Future of the Left: Travels With Myself And Another
Finally some raw testosterone on our slightly delicate list. Future of the Left make great rock music. Fact. With brilliantly clever lyrics to boot. Amazing live and fun to talk to.
    MP3: Arming Eritrea

    4. Nite Jewel: Good Evening
Although this did technically come out in late '08, it didn't get much attention 'til this year and this little lady sure deserved it. Good Evening delivers many gems of hazy synth pop and gorgeous slow motion disco rounded off by Ramona's layered airy vocals.
    MP3: Weak for Me

    5. Dirty Projectors: Bitte Orca
Pretentious can be good! The Dirty Projectors have certainly mastered the craft of bizarro art-pop songs, but Bitte Orca is by far their most accomplished and accessible record. With curious arrangements and gorgeous harmonies, it's a real feast for the ears.
    MP3: Stillness Is the Move

    6. Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Animal Collective wowed us way back in January already, and it was certainly an excellent way to kick off the year. MPP displays all those elements that make AC such a spectacularly unique band and brings them together in the best possible way. Now, almost a year later, even though the initial hype has died down, it's still excellent, and it has given us some of the most exhilarating songs to sing along and skip to of the year.
    MP3: My Girls

    7. Cold Cave: Love Comes Close
A remarkable debut full-length of dark atmospheric synth pop from Cold Cave's amazing line-up comprising Wesley Eisold, Xiu Xiu's Caralee McElroy and Dominick Fernow (a.k.a. Prurient) bringing on the noise. The album features a couple of tracks we already heard on last year's EPs (but those are some excellent tracks so it doesn't hurt) and new dance ready stand-outs such as life magazine.
MP3: The Trees Grew Emotions And Died

    8. The Juan Maclean: The Future Will Come
The Future Will Come gave us two undeniable club hits with Happy House and 播放One Day. Probably wouldn't be so high up if it weren't for that awesome live show in August. Although at moments maybe a little too reminiscent of The Human League, The Future still rocks. RIP Jerry Fuchs.
Happy House

    9. Tim Hecker: An Imaginary Country
The perfect record to study to. Honest. Try it. It hasn't received much praise 'cos he can "do better" and true, Harmony in Ultraviolet was brilliant, but all this doesn't take anything away from it. It's still an excellent record.
    MP3: 100 Years Ago

    10. The xx: xx
Gorgeously smooth and minimal pop complemented by sleek boy-girl vocals seductively playing off each other. A real stunner from these South London newcomers.
    MP3: Islands

    11. Micachu & the Shapes: Jewelery
Just In Case

    12. Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Lisztomania

    13. Terror Bird: Sociopaths Are Glam
    MP3: Beat Off Queen

    14. Projekt A-Ko: Yoyodyne
Molten Hearts

    15. JJ: JJ N°2
    MP3: from africa to málaga

    16. Real Estate: Real Estate
Suburban Beverage

    17. Dan Deacon: Bromst
    MP3: Padding Ghost

  • 2009: Year In Review

Obligatory sentence that expresses disgust, disdain and disapproval of shitty shit shit music released this year.

To be perfectly honest, though, I wanna say there was a boatload of great shit that came out this year, but I'm not too sure anymore. Still, teh shit that I did enjoy, I enjoyed a whole fucking lot. Like, teh artists who came through with dope shit came with that front-to-back album chock-full-of-goodness type dope shit.

So, while this edition of teh Year in Review continues in teh tradition of having only two categories, I suppose some elaboration on teh uber-favourites will offer some insight into teh dopeness of teh dopeness.

ZOMG DIS IZ LYKE SOOOOO FULL OV TEH AWESOME!

    Dam-Funk - Toeachizown
A crazy mix of some dope soul/space/funk shit, Toeachizown demands you to roll up and blaze to it for the entire two hours.

Electric Wire Hustle - Electric Wire Hustle
Now this is what (post-?)(modern-?)neo-soul should sound like, yes?

    Exile - Radio
A great achievement in instrumental music, Exile displays his mastery of the MPC and his incredible ear for samples.

    Fashawn - Boy Meets World
Boy Meets World is almost like a loose sequel to Blu & Exile's Below the Heavens. Almost. Regardless of teh comparisons, what's important is taht Fash kills it, and Exile comes thru with some serious heat.

J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid
Yup, obvious inclusion of Dilla is obvious. I don't give a fuck. The beats bang, the features bang, so that's that.

    Little Dragon - Machine Dreams
A little more dancy and upbeat than their debut, Machine Dreams maintains teh atmospheric beauty of their sound while pounding even moar synth-heavy goodness without ever missing a beat. And ZOMG, seeing Yukimi and teh gang perform live was just epic.

Madlib - Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6
BKvol5-6 gets a mention here because I actually officially copped the shit in 2009, even though I loved the hell out of teh leak in 2008.

    Metric - Fantasies
This is far and away my favourite Metric album. Everything about it is So Succexy.

    Mos Def - The Ecstatic
The Mighty Mos' take on DOOM's model of music making shows him in top form. Casa Bey is that crack. Not to mention the Ruler's cameo appearance is worth the price of admission alone.

Nicolay - City Lights Vol. 2: Shibuya
Genre-bending seems to be name of the game for my favourite crew of musicians, The Foreign Exchange. Whatever teh classification, this album is perfect for any time of day no matter where you might find, or lose, yourself.

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II
Though rap album sequels are generally fail, Raekwon does not disappoint on this one. In fact, this album is an amazing follow up to teh O.G., banging beats and crazy ill drug raps ftw. I needs the instrumental to Surgical Gloves in my life.

    Robert Glasper - Double Booked
Dope jazz? Check. Dope hip-hop fusion with jazz? ZOMG. Though admittedly, I'm not always in teh mood for straight up jazz shit, this album cannot be denied.

(Also, I absolutely HATE that Robert Glasper's collabo with Bilal is pitted against The Foreign Exchange's Daykeeper in teh Grammies. Like, DAMN.)

The Roots - Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Sandwiches EP
Only 22 of 1000, but fuggit -- these free! goodies from The Legendary show that quality and diversity do not have to compromise. Hopefully that new Roots album will not be postponed anymoar.

Slug & Murs - Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez
Sluggo and MURS got a whole album produced by.. Aesop muthafuckin' Rock? Wait, wat? Though 22 tracks may be a bit overkill, these dudes did the damn thing. Again, the instros to this shit would be oh so good, cuz Aes done brought that BASS FO' YO' TRUNK.

    Tanya Morgan - Brooklynati
I really really really liked this album, really. All iller and no filler, teh TM crew shine. Prime example of how an album of front-to-back dopeness could and should be made.

    Zo! - ...just visiting too
Yet moar amazing covers from The Foreign Exchange crew. Zo! & 'em Love the 90's? I hope so.

    Yes, this is also good.

    14KT - Nowalataz
    Atmosphere - Leak at Will
    BK-One - Radio do Canibal
    Blakroc - Blakroc
Blame One - Days Chasing Days
    Blockhead - The Music Scene
    Blueprint - Sign Language
Brother Ali - The Truth Is Here EP
    Brother Ali - Us
Camp Lo - Stone and Rob: Caught on Tape
Clutchy Hopkins - Music is My Medicine
CunninLynguists - Strange Journey Volume One
CunninLynguists - Strange Journey Volume Two
    Definitive Jux Presents IV
Diamond District - In the Ruff
    DJ Spinna - Sonic Smash
    Doom - Born Like This
    Elzhi - The Leftovers Unmixedtape
Freeway - The Beat Made Me Do It
The Gift of Gab - Escape 2 Mars
