  • Morrissey Kicks the Dolls

Oh. My. Fuck. I saw Morrissey tonight at the Gibson Amphitheater and the show was AMAZING! The opening band was incomparably good and blew every other band I have seen open for him clear out of the water... yes, even Nancy Sinatra. They were called Doll And The Kicks and they were PHENOMENAL. The lead singer was a female Jack Fairy character...also a marionette. It was amazing to watch, the music was suuuuper glam era sounding and they shut all of the whiny Morrissey fans up and made us all actually give a listen. It helps that they have a great band name design that was projected behind them with neat moving gobos and really saturated colors, look great in purple. I liked them so much I waited through the death mosh at the end to get a CD (while the masses fought over T-shirts) and actually found them and got it signed! Go me! Great CD, I applaud Morrissey on this find.

After Doll And The Kicks went off began the traditional video clip time, where Morrissey shows us a warm up for his brilliance. I was trying to think of the videos as glamorous while they were playing, but I realized that no... although some had their glamour it was something else he was going for, and then it hit me: camp. They were pretty freaking campy video clips. A song about a pet bear and a Tom Jones wannabe? An amazing interview with Lou Reed and a German clip of the New York Dolls? Ending on a bizarre monologue by a woman in front of a sequined curtain that went crazy and screamed as a spotlight focused in on her face? The curtain fell, the band dramatically and the deal was sealed for me, it was going to be one campy night.

This Charming Man started and the crowd went wild-- almost lost my voice then and there, but there was so much more to come! The lights were flashy, the band was spot on and Morrissey was so damn charming. The gong solo was also pretty damn epic. And, of course, as soon as his top came off the crowd went wild. 50 and still gorgeous *melt*. Over all, tons of Smiths songs were played (播放How Soon Is Now, 播放Cemetry Gates, Death at One's Elbow, others...), a lot of B-Sides were played (播放Teenage Dad On His Estate, 播放Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice) , he sweetly went to the audience and let them give shout outs and fork over the gifts they had so thoughtfully brought. Great exchange: Fan:-"I want you, I need you, I love you" Morrissey- You'll get over it. Gah, there just aren't words to describe how captivating and spectacular Morrissey is, there really aren't. Best part: Morrissey: "Lamenting policewomen, policemen, silly women, taxmen" the audience screams "Uniformed whores!" Morrissey: "I know!"

Long and short of it is: only one thing could have possibly been better than tonight: 1980s Morrissey and 1980s Danzig oiled up and wrestling... and the winner gets to take me to Italy for gelato. Hey, a girl can dream...

  • How diverse is your musical taste?

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 8 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • Favorites from '09

Harbzilla

Being a giant pussy, I'm going to list only my favorite album of the year. All the others on the list are just runner-ups.

    The Best of '09:
    Lucero - 1372 Overton Park
I could probably listen to this album every day. The added horn section gave this album a lot of depth, and really brought songs like 播放Can't Feel A Thing to life. On my first full listen through, I remembered thinking when the first bad song was going to come up. It didn't.

    The Other Favorites of '09:

    Metric - Fantasies
I've been a Metric fan for quite some time now, so Fantasies was one of the first albums to grab my attention this year. It's got rock, it's got soul, it's just a classic Metric album.

Florence + The Machine - Lungs
Contrary to Metric, Lungs was one of the last albums to get a large amount of spins for me this year. After hearing the first track (播放Dog Days Are Over) I was hooked. I'll say it again, Flo's got some goddamn pipes!

    Japandroids - Post-Nothing
I couldn't stop listening to these guys after hearing 播放Wet Hair for the first time (thanks Mace). What? French kissing French girls sounds like a great idea when you're half-tossed. Great album.

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers
The band recorded a bunch of material around lyrics written by their ex-member who mysteriously disappeared in '95. That material was Journal For Plague Lovers. It sounds distinctly British (if that makes any sense) and 播放Marlon J.D. (For U.S release) was the track that closed the deal.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
What can I say that hasn't been said about this album. I'll settle with excellent.

    Jamie T - Kings & Queens
When I first read about this album, I didn't think for a minute that I'd like it. After searching out a couple of tracks, something clicked. A British guy in his early twenties rapping in a thick accent to intricately layered diverse music. It's unique to say the least.

    Morrissey - Years of Refusal
播放Something Is Squeezing My Skull grabs you by the throat off the bat, and doesn't let go until you submit to Morrissey's A-sexual greatness.

The Pink Mountaintops - Outside Love
Recommended by Will in Mizzou, this album has really grown on me. 播放The Gayest Of Sunbeams is probably my favorite track of the year. (Hint: listen to it)

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There are Mountains
I could never put my finger on it exactly, but there is something I truly like about this album. When it first came out I gave it a moderate amount of spins, but find myself coming back to it now and again. A very solid debut.

    So, there's my top ten.

    The Honorable Mentions of '09:

PJ Harvey & John Parish - A Woman, a Man, Walked By
    The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Built to Spill - There Is No Enemy
    Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King (Good to seem them trying to make better music)

    The Dross of '09:

The most painful category because of what albums didn't measure up.

    Wilco - Wilco (The Album)
One Wing and Bull Black Nova couldn't save this album. It seemed rushed and boring. It's still not a terrible album, but compared to everything else in the Wilco catalog, it deserves this dishonorable distinction.

    Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Just like with Wilco there were two or three really good tracks, and a lot of mediocre boring ones. Not the worst album ever, but the worst so far for the Arctic Monkeys.

Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs
This was the year for bands that I really, really like to put out boring records. Unfortunately for everyone, Yo Lo Tengo followed suit.

    Passion Pit - Manners
I thought this was supposed the next big thing this summer? Their spot on this list is merely to get a rise out of Kels.

That does it. I more than likely forgot many, many gems that came out this year, but there you have it!

  • BEST ALBUMS OF 2009

Mosquitokillah

    1. Southpaw Grammar: Remastered - Morrissey

"Southpaw Grammar" is Morrissey's 5th studio album from 1995 and it was always my favourite Moz-Album. This year it got re-released in remastered form with a completely new tracklist (incl. 3 previously unreleased tracks + 1 B-Side) and brandnew artwork - and, believe it or not, it sounds even better than the already fabulous Original. The new tracklist makes it sound like a new album, the bonustracks are outstanding, the artwork is magnificent - this is what I call perfection!

    2. Journal For Plague Lovers

  • Top 10: 2009

Canciones Recomendadas: 播放El rock ha muerto, Ningún lugar, 播放Tarde

9.- The Lonely Island - Incredibad
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放Jizz in My Pants, Dick In A Box, Natalie's Rap

8.- Mew - No More Stories
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放Introducing Palace Players, 播放New Terrain, 播放Sometimes Life Isn't Easy

    7.- Brand New - Daisy
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放Vices, 播放At The Bottom, 播放Bed

6.- Placebo - Battle For The Sun
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放Ashtray Heart, 播放Battle For The Sun, 播放For What It's Worth

5.- Morrissey - Years of Refusal
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放That's How People Grow Up, 播放All You Need Is Me, 播放I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris

4.- NOFX - Coaster & Cokie The Clown
Canciones Recomendadas: My Oprhan Year (acoustic), We Called It America, Eddie, Bruce and Paul

    3.- AFI - Crash Love
Canciones Recomendadas: I'm Trying Very Hard to Be Here, 播放Darling, I Want To Destroy You, 播放Veronica Sawyer Smokes, 播放Medicate

2.- Coheed and Cambria - Neverender
Canciones Recomendadas: The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut (Live), IRO-Bot (Live), Everything Evil/The Trooper/Devil In Jersey City Medley, Welcome Home (live)

    1.- Weezer - Raditude
Canciones Recomendadas: 播放(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To, Can't Stop Partying, I'm Your Daddy, 播放I Don't Want To Let You Go

    Menciones Honoríficas:
(Son muchas así que evitare las imágenes)
    Chris Cornell - Scream

Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe
Lamentablemente nada más he escuchado el sencillo 播放

Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know

Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

    Billy Talent - III
Escuché el sencillo Rusted From The Rain y Turn Your Back, y tengo que decir que suenan bastante bien, pero al igual que los discos anteriores no he tenido la oportunidad de escucharlo completo.

    Muse - The Resistance

    Porcupine Tree - The Incident

Sonata Arctica - The Days of Grays

    The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
No lo he escuchado completo, pero suena bastante bien.

    John Frusciante - The Empyrean

  • 2009 most played albums:

Ok, it’s been a bit of a slow year musically for me, only 3 of my 15 most played albums where actually released this year, so I can’t really state my favourite albums of the year. But 2009 has been a really important year for me, graduating from uni, and really starting to have a feel of who I am, and the albums I have listened to this really reflects on what I have felt, seen, heard, and done, so here my 15 most listened:

    1. John Frusciante - The Empyrean

There was no doubt that this album would top my album charts of most listened in 2009. Again, John as crafted an album which is so different from his previous 9 records, yet it’s so distinctively his work. I was trying to compare this album with others, and I think the closest I can arrive at is pink Floyd’s dark side of the moon. Not sound wise, but the way the album is constructed, the way it flows, and narratively. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this album is the way his influences really present themselves, which I fucking love. Any album that has touches of other artists ingrained into the subconscious of a way an artist creates his work really hits the rights notes for me. From Frank zappa in One more of me (which I can’t get enough of), to funkadelic/parliament in dark/light. There might be some bias, as I’m such a massive frusciante fan, but there are not many modern day artists that continue to constantly work in such a fashion, and constantly produce work at such a high standard.

    2. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Two suns really fits into the mould of music I listen to, anything that is spacious, colourful, and puts you in a different place. I must admit, I arrived at listening to two suns on the back of all the hype from the music press and a certain Mr Thom Yorke after her, there, first album fur and gold (which I have since brought and rather like too). Two suns has the brilliance that each song sounds different at different times, songs will surprise you in certain moods and reveal hidden depths in various plays, and like any good record, you will end up changing which is your favourite track

    3. Bon Iver - for emma forever ago

So it’s been a year since release, and the good news is the album has stood the test of time. Ok a bit too optimistic, but still playing it loads a year later normally means good things. And the best part? Blood bank was equally impressive, and bracket of dark was the night compilation was great too. Actually the best part is seeing the band on TV live at Glastonbury (ok so seeing him live would have been better!), the band he has rocked, I was really impressed, and it added a whole different depth and sound to his already beautiful music. And then there’s that Jools Holland performance where he delivers one of the shows best ever performances, which fully captures the mystique, imagery, emotion and the recording process of sitting a cabin in forest country mourning the loss of a relationship, in 3 odd minutes of pure bliss.

    4. John Frusciante - Curtains

my favourite album ever. Period. Nuff said.

    5. Eddie Vedder - Into The wild

    6. Radiohead - In Rainbows

    7. John Frusciante- The will to death

This is perhaps John’s most underrated album. Its one that IS very understated, which catches, creeps on you at the most unexpected times. It’s a rather fragile album, yet really assured, delivered in full confidence. Perhaps its Frusciante most straightforward album, not overly produced, but rich in his personal experiences, and written directly from the heart without being overly abstract in its lyrics and musically. For some bizarre reason, this album really makes me think of the colour green, so much so It rather frightens me. (The album does talk a lot about rebirth, growing etc.??)

    8. Pearl Jam - Yield

So, 2009 was the year I fell In love with pearl jam, pretty much ignored them in the past , well not ignored, but listened to them properly. So I had a lot of random pearl jam albums spinning, so I haven’t had chance to fully get to know there albums (apart from ten, obviously, everyone heard ten countless times right?), and gain an overriding impression of each one, its subtleties, its moments . So yield, has won the war of being most played, so what of it? Well it’s fast paced, vibrant, it’s what I so far perceive as a typical PJ record. Perhaps the album as the best combination of what pearl jam is. Its has punchy moments, its stadium rock moments, its solitude moments. It is pearl jam. Sciatica and flight perhaps?

    9. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrists

This is the album that deftones always promised to deliver! I mentioned in the bats for lashes part about fitting into the mould of being a spacious, colourful album, this fits into that category, yet it comes from another universe of music, style, and thought. Oh and all the best for Chi

    10. Sigur Ros - agaetis byrjun

    11. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - The Assassination Of Jesse James

What a film! What a soundtrack! Mr Nick Cave what an astonishing piece of music! This album as you may as guessed is seriously good. One that I often just stick on for piece of mind.

    12. Explosions in the Sky - All of a sudden i miss everyone

    13. Elliot Smith - Either/or

    14. Morrissey - Years of Refusal

    15. Midlake - Trials of Van Occupanther
