I really like the new album, actually. Not every song is great, but there's definitely enough to make it a solid listen.

I think what's got people all down on the album is the 8 year wait. If they released the same album about 2-4 years after We Were Dead... I feel like it would have gotten a better reaction. As far as the album itself goes, I dig it. I dig it a lot. It fits nicely within their discography.

"Lampshades on Fire" sounds like a sped-up version of "The World at Large" at certain points, and I'm not liking that.

Can't say the whole album is a winner front-to-back, but some really good additions to the MM catalog on here. Glad to see they're still taking risks with their sound, too. http://staticdistance.com/2015/03/11/review-modest-mouse-strangers-to-ourselves/

Y'all are taking Pistol way too seriously, i think it's supposed to be a stupid sounding song. Anyway this album is pretty good, it just doesn't add much new to the table. Lampshades On Fire, Pups to Dust, and Sugar Boats are all really great.

I wrote this once "LCW = Long Drive = Building Nothing > SSS = Fruit = I8 = M&A > Everywhere and His Nasty > We Were Dead > Good News = No One's First". On later toughts, M&A is better than SSS for sure.. and No One's First is better than good News. Don't know where to rank Strangers.

Digging the new album. Not understanding the hate. Lots of fine, classic MM songs here. I for one was ecstatic at the quality after 8 long years of waiting. They've still got it.

@AngryGermanKid: I'm so tired of this argument. Björk did it. Björk just released an album that rivals HER classic 1997 album, why can't Modest Mouse? I'm sorry, I'm not cutting my favorite band any slack. This is TOUGH LOVE. Before Good News, literally everything they released was a masterpiece. So... yeah, they still have it in them to create another one. I truly believe that. They have the potential. It's there. The creativity is being choked out of them though.

Not liking the new release. Its been 8 years since We Were Dead and they've added absolutely nothing in terms of innovation. The overall message is fine but there's nothing really memorable. And Pistol is awful. My full review is in my sidebar if you wanna check it out, and add me while you're at it!

Right now all the best songs on the new album just remind me of older songs of theirs I like better, and all the worst songs remind me of worse versions of songs of theirs I didn't like.

From what I've heard so far (eleven tracks in), I can tell that the new album is far from bad. The only song I couldn't stand was "Pistol", so far. Sure it's nothing like their first albums, but I appreciate it for what it is.

Despite my complaints, I'm listening to Strangers to Ourselves a LOT.

    15 天前
  • naotas_forehead

It's all over the place and not cohesive because the track order makes no sense, (and indeed, stylistically all over the place. But there are plenty of bands like Pavement and Ween that can make stylistically all over the place albums cohesive.), and it sounds the same because of the over production. So it's both not cohesive and it sounds the same. Just way too loud and coldly calculated arrangements instead of flowing spontaneously and creatively with passion (like the old albums do). But my opinion on this album will change over time, I'm sure. I like all the songs individually, I just get a headache when I try to piece them together.

"still others saying under produced..." Who the hell is saying this?

    15 天前
  • naotas_forehead

"I have long preferred their older stuff *until now" That's really interesting. I don't understand how, if Good News and WWD didn't do it for you... But of course, it all comes down to personal opinion. There are very few people I know in real life who "get" Modest Mouse, or even music in general, the same way I do. So it's nice to actually talk to people about it. And no two people on earth, I'm convinced, have the exact same opinions and taste in music. I've spent way too much time on this site to think otherwise. So it follows that there is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to music taste. (Even if most top 40 crap makes me physically ill, and I want to cleanse it with fire...)

compare this to the lyrics on the moon and antarctica or the lonesome crowded west. really far from being that memorable or profound

And @CosmicOrigin, you bring up great points and i totally agree

I've noticed in the comments for strangers... Some people complain that it's all over the place, not cohesive, while others state of all sounds the same, and while most speak of over production, there are still others saying under produced... I think the point is that it is all a matter of individual perspective and opinion. It either resonates or not. I have long preferred mostly the older stuff, and upon first listen there were a few tunes that I was resistant to hear... But as i said earlier (I think I wrote this...) each listen I have discovered more to love and there really is no "weak track" for me. I do have my standing favorites, while also now adding to that list, tracks that I was not initially in love with. It is just my feeling that this adds exciting and different content to the discography that thrills me. In the end, I too love reading all opinions that explore regardless of whether if I don't agree. I appreciate & totally understand your passion naotas_forehead.

[naotas_forehead] it can also be true if you take into consideration the other albums. You have a lot of passion for the band and their earlier material. People can also have this same passion for the newer material and less for their older material. Each side is true and it's fun to discuss it. Heck, I wish I could contribute to this conversation but I haven't listened to the new album.

    15 天前
  • naotas_forehead

@gonzo: Yyyeeah, it's not that I disagree with you. Everything you've said is true if you take a look at the album as separate from the others. Of course there are going to be good points to it. Even when Modest Mouse sucks, they are still good.

The new album sounds amazing. I am only just getting more deeply acquainted with the individual songs, but fell in love with the sound the first time I played the whole album through today. Ansel is beautiful!
