@imdrunksfuck: I'm sorry to hear that. It's true they've changed, but you shouldn't let it effect your life so negatively. The old albums will always be there for you, regardless. :)

Notably, the live shows I've attended, the new songs DO have that certain... thing. Some unexplained energy. It's still different from the old records, but it convinced me that they still have it in them. Also, I don't give a fuck that they sold out. I love them anyway. There is no denying that they sold out. They did! I'm just gonna say it. BUT I DON'T CARE. I love them. They deserve it. They don't owe us anything.

I sound like an obsessed fan-boy, but this is how I really feel. I am in LOVE with old Modest Mouse. Goddamn it.

But old MM is more than just good music. It is so much more depth and passion and soul. I can connect with it on a deeper, more personal level than almost all other music. At the risk of sounding like an unbearable douche and snob: But holy fucking shit, it's art in its highest form. There is something very very VERY valuable in old Modest Mouse that I cannot explain. And past that "Good News" point, it's gone. And I don't understand it. I've tried and tried and tried to understand it, to find it. It doesn't make any sense. They are using many of the same sounds, Isaac still uses clever wordplay that utilizes paradoxes and metaphors, the songs can sound amazing as hell and even stir some emotions, but that THING that magical THING is totally gone. It's present in everything before Good News. I am constantly amazed that it is present even in shitty early recordings when they were 16 or whatever, on Tube Fruit, etc.

Eh, I'm kind of tired of this whole argument that "bands evolve", therefore MM is still good. There are plenty of bands who have drastically evolved their style over the years, but remained relatively at the same level of greatness across their discography (Fugazi, The Flaming Lips). The thing that bothers me about Modest Mouse is that there is a clear-cut POINT where their music stops being truly GREAT. Modest Mouse lost something very vital between Everywhere & His Nasty Parlor Tricks and Good News for People Who Love Bad News. The strangest, most frustrating thing is that this quality, this THING is unquantifiable and almost impossible to explain. It's not production values or major labels, because the Moon & Antarctica disproves that. (NOTE: The difference between old and new Modest Mouse is HUGE, but that doesn't mean that new MM is bad music. It is good music. I like new MM.)

    2. I personally don't care, let me just listen to the music and see what I like and dislike. Signing on to a major label clearly had a influence on MM, this was easily evident with "the moon", but to me it's more important that they are still able to craft something that still contains their unique identity. I personally think they are still doing this and i'm glad they are, the years has changed what their identity is but it hasn't diminished the way they are able to express themselves genuinely. Any musician that has the courage to release a album certainly deserves respect for having the courage to release something that will be analyzed and critiqued to no end but at the same time it's good that we all have varying opinions. How boring would it be if everyone agreed with everyone. We would all be content with listening to Beethoven 24/7 (not trying to insinuate that Beethoven is terrible).

    1. so I just want to clarify, when I say pop, i define it in the sense that that it doesn't have the unpolished sound that "lonesome" and "long drive" have. Not that it's really important to clarify this, but i just want to. ok? ok. So when it comes to critiquing music I try my best not to let outside factors influence me. What I mean is that try not to let the musicians lives or actions deter my analysis. We can theorize to death why MM signed on to a major label; they grew up and started thinking more about the future, they started a family, they wanted to reach more people, or maybe they just wanted to make more money....

[CosmicOrigin] I agree with some of the points you made, specifically what you said about point-blank shouts or that it is difficult to have a legitimate discussion on a last.fm shoutbox. I also don't find this supposed 'pop structure' to be disappointing. Sure, it's drastically different than very old Modest Mouse. Sure, maybe it's similar in technique, structure as more recent albums, whatever EdgeLike was referring to that seemed repetitive. But I think many people tend to forget that being a musical artist is also a career - they have to answer to record labels and new fan bases they have gained. They still need to appeal to those entities. There is a lot at play, and they are simply trying to make a living just like any of us, but with a challenge of creativity. Therefore, in my opinion, I feel it is best to keep an open mind & appreciate the crafting of an album, even if it wasn't what I had hoped for.

[reactions] I don't think it's entirely a bad thing. If the writing is legitimately thought out, I find some ideas, good or bad, to be insightful. I agree with what Edge4like says about the direction that MM is heading to, more of a pop structure, but while he finds this disappointing I have no problem with it. Admittedly, I don't know to what extent this pop sound is on the new material since I haven't listened to it. What I do find tiresome are the shouts, negative or positive, that say "Best band ever" or "This sucks mouse balls". But it really doesn't irk me that much. To have a legitimate discussion on a artist's last.fm page is very difficult if almost impossible.

The people who come on this page and bitch about how Modest Mouse has changed are just tiresome. Seriously, if artists didn't progress, then the music you know and love would not exist because it would have never evolved into what it is today. With that being said, I look forward to the album, and I rather enjoy the track 'Coyotes'.

4 tracks heard. continuing disappointment. at this point the modest mouse i want wont be returning. feels like each successive album is merely an update of the previous. more power pop although lyrically Isaac is still strong.

The Ground Walks With Time In A Box is a monster of a choon. That bassline, the weird little instrumental outro, the tight percussion and that hook. I liked all the songs thus far, to varying degrees, but The Ground Walks feels like Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes put through a David Byrne filter and it sounds great.

New songs are OK. I actually still enjoy the band's new stuff, even better than most of the shitty-artsy-hipster stuff. Besides, most of their recent live setlists on stage are mainly based on old-and-new-works.

Lampshades isnt even a shit song, i wasn't keen on it at first but its grown on me in it's punchy funky rhythmic stomping ways, but I think the newest song is by far the most interesting song so far with lots going on. I mean it has a lot about it which is incredibly catchy but holy shit does it change things up a lot. In fact ignoring the production it sounds like something that'd crop up on 'Building Nothing Out Of Something'
