I'm going to prematurely declare "Small Mountain" as my favourite track off the new album. This is incredibly beautiful. I wouldn't call it catchy but it's certainly something to be respected.

Well you sounded like that idiot you bemoan. My comments were not unprovoked, they were well-justified, rather. We've had clashing opinions at a previous time. Last.fm users are notorious for dismissing new albums just for the sake of it, rather than giving them fair chances to grow. Based on your comment, you seemed to fall right in line. I can only go by your initial statement and I'm providing an alternative, and more balanced, point of view. The Courage of Others may or may not be as masterful an achievement as its predecessor, but it's no damp squip either. Your criticisms of the album are shortsighted and riddled of arrogance. As if Midlake needed to custom-fit their sound just to please you.

Of course I’ll give the album time. That goes without saying, plus only an idiot would lay down his definitive view on an anticipated album two days after he has heard it. I mean it’s Midlake…nuff said. It doesn’t mean however, that 2 months or 2 years from now my opinion will have differed. To be honest it probably won’t, I have a hunch for these things and truth is, over a span of 3 years I can’t shake off the feeling that the new album has offered far too little to justify such a lengthy wait.

Actually, my accusations are still entirely relevant because, regardless of the context, it doesn’t change the fact that you were the first to be patronizing, and might I add, in an entirely unprovoked manner. Plus it has nothing to do with what I revealed, it’s what YOU assumed that led you to be incorrect, and assumptions are the mother of all fuck-ups as they say. My lack of perception? Pfft, yeah it doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to notice there are slight differences in the aural aesthetic, but I still perceive TCOO as a degression. A more “brooding territory” may get your juices flowing, but personally TTOVO contained enough brooding atmosphere to keep me totally engrossed while simultaneously providing more variation in every facet.

All I'm asking is that you give the album time. Otherwise, you'll be left recanting. It took a long time for people to catch up with The Trials of Van Occupanther, which is rightfully hailed now as a modern masterpiece. The Courage of Others could enjoy the same fate.

That was before you revealed you listened to the album more than once. Which is still a shame on your part because you still take away nothing from it. So your accusations of hypocrisy are null and void. Actually, your lack of perception is your undoing because the sounds of this new album are indeed faithful to the press quote you've cited. This album inhabits more overcast, brooding territory and is more folk-inflected than the previous album. It's also more densely manicured. These differences are not as striking as the ones from Bamnan and Slivercork to The Trials of Van Occupanther, but denying them is foolish. Certainly not a step backwards, as you imply. Instead, this album marks the band finding a sound they are comfortable with and presenting key variations of it accordingly, not some radical reinvention. You and I are obviously not listening to the same album if you seem to feel The Courage of Others is nothing more than a dull facsimile of their previous outings.

Woah, you're accusing ME of using condescending tones? If you give a little then you get a little dude, and your lack of self-awareness must be astronomical if you can’t even notice the huge dollop of hypocrisy you’ve just dished out. "Please don't pretend to be more knowledgeable about it than you are"...hmm yes, that’s not condescending in the slightest is it. No it doesn't do favours for anyone, you've only your own advice to take heed of I'm afraid. As I stated, this is my INITIAL opinion and thus subject to change, it’s nothing to do with patience. Yes I had expectations…when the band members state “we carried on moving and creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion” then quite rightly I expect progression. But alas, no such progression can be found, quite the opposite in fact. I’m just being objective and speaking my mind…Midlake’s previous two albums have delivered, so far this new one hasn’t.

Yeah, as if listening on a compressed piece of shit like an iPod allows the music to reveal its true nature, y'know? You seem misguided by expectations, and that's YOUR fault, not the band's. No, The Courage of Others doesn't equate a giant leap in sound or style, but this was well-publicized in early press for the album. Regardless, this is not to be disregarded as a retread. You should have done better to adjust your expectations accordingly. The Courage of Others pays its dividends with subsequent listens and it's just disappointing that people like you lack the patience to appreciate what Midlake has accomplished with this new effort. Only time will show if The Courage of Others is to the level of The Trials of Van Occupanther, but condescending tones such as yours aren't doing any favors for anyone.
