I wouldn't classify Breathing as a ballad, it's far more complex both, lyrically and musically. yet, it is one of her most impressive works and everytime I listen to it I'm stunned.

@pokrishka Heads We're Dancing, Leave It Open, and Pull Out The Pin are all pretty dark as well. Without a doubt, "The Dreaming" is her darkest album. But if you're thinking of dark as in "having bleak subject matter", "Breathing" probably takes the cake. Though its difficult to discern just exactly what its about "Mother Stands For Comfort" is pretty dark. "Song of Solomon" is filled in desperation and heart-ache. And "if you mean, "which song is most frightening, well you can't go wrong with "Waking The Witch." Hope that helps, and enjoy the quivers and the quavers. :)

@jamesusillxd: well, it depends which Tori album is your fav. many say to start off with Hounds of Love as it is Kate at her best. but I guess it can wait. I'd tell u go like this: Never for Ever -> Hounds of Love -> The Dreaming -> The Sensual World. NFE is the first album showing Kate as a grown, confident artis, HOL serves as the "more accessible" masterpiece, The Dreaming is an eargasm for brave ppl n TSW shows you heaven and puts in clouds' arms.
