It's very hard to write about Ian Curtis and Joy Division given we know that he was driven to suicide. Never has the slow destruction of an individual, completely outside of the usual, banal rock 'n' roll cliché about living fast and dying young, been more graphically depicted in music. This track, like all others on the lp 'Unknown Pleasures' is chilling and utterly, utterly compelling.

this song and new dawn fades are particularly disturbing, and this one the most so, as both show near-metal testosterone-driven riffs and yet, lyrically as well as melodically, show the extreme sadness of being tortured by an extreme sensitivity to the world's cruelty and one's own self-realized partaking of it. Ian is a great poet, as his accusations are also directed inwards, and we are never sure about the You's and I's so often displayed in his lyrics. I guess he felt a terrible shame, felt too much, too heavy, and his lifelong experiences, though conventionally seen as brief (23 years old at death-time), were felt as a multitude of emotional layers, a sense of reverence and immobility towards a past so chained around him he could only sense a way out seldom. His songs are about an intense need to escape from very personal ghosts and a fatality that always comes. He felt old and paralyzed by visions we cannot understand. Poor Ian.
