  • TOP 10 RECORDS OF 2009

Holidays approaching - time to sum up the year with the best new music...

10 The Swell Season - Strict Joy

I have to thank The Tonight Show with Conan O’brien for introducing me to this dulcet duo. They were performing live and vocalist Glen Hansard’s warm voice in a bluesy ballad called 播放Low Rising seemed awfully palatable to my sensibilities, so I immediately acquired their full album. The album is strong, even though Low Rising remains the most tuneful piece on it. I read that Hansard was the founder of an Irish indie band The Frames and The Swell Season is more of a side project for him and his former girlfriend, Czech pianist Markéta Irglová. They apparently won an Oscar for Best Original Song from the 2007 musical drama Once. Strict Joy is the third studio LP they’ve released together. Markéta can be heard singing lead on a couple of tracks, but the anonymous quality of her voice doesn’t add much to the tapestry of swirling guitars and light folk rhythms. It’s Hansard’s elegantly pensive personality that takes this record on another level, higher than your typical cornershop indie output.

09 Elysian Fields - The Afterlife

Elysian Fields must be the most obscure band in my favourites list. They are so deep under ground that you can comb through Youtube and end up with only a handful of videos where you see them performing in some dark, dingy jazz club for 30 people. And that they are once again a male/female duo (New York-based musicians Oren Bloedow and Jennifer Charles) like The Swell Season strikes me as a humourous coincidence. Humour is one facet of them that attracted me from the start. Jennifer Charles possesses a voice so sultry that it could melt the pants off any man, but she’s not able to wrap herself around the sexual metaphors in Climbing my Dark Hair without the scent of self-irony dripping through. She’s a bit of a clown, lulling and seducing the listener into a mysterious dream where the most exotic bedroom fantasies (whether straight or lesbian) become possible.

08 Tinted Windows - Tinted Windows

Optimistic power pop suits Taylor Hanson like a glove. Even as a daddio he’s still able to switch into youthful Where’s-The-Love-style singing mode and make me feel giddy, like he does on 播放Messing With My Head - first song from the album that caught my attention. He’s also particularly scrumptious in places where the mood bites a little – 播放Dead Serious or his self-penned track 播放Nothing to Me. Listening to his voice again after a long while, I found myself wishing he was backed up by his own brothers, but I suppose James Iha’s interesting guitar patterns compensate somewhat for the lack of Hanson-ness.

    07 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

It’s Blitz! is a little gem of an album that I feel like I haven’t yet started to really appreciate, because it hasn’t completely sunk in yet. Maybe I will give it a higher rating in a year or two once I’ve seen how the music holds up. Indie magazines are collectively drooling over it, but I’m reluctant to fall for what I’m told to fall for. That said... lead singer Karen O’s presence suggests layers of richness under glowing electro-disco beats and in slower numbers she comes quite close to assuaging my concern over the actual substance of this sugar-coated affair. She’s definitely hinting at something more serious than snarky girlie angst, but is it enough to make me care for them beyond this blitz?

06 Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince - Original Soundtrack

If you don’t believe that this is the most splendid Harry Potter score since John Williams provided his magic on the Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban soundtrack, then listen to In Noctem, Harry & Hermione, Farewell Aragog, When Ginny Kissed Harry and Dumbledore's Farewell for about ten times. There are no roaring and sweeping themes in here, but every delicate composition reveals emotional subtleties that will tug at your heartstrings when given a chance.

05 Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life

A very controversial album that frustrated many old school fans with its slick "Americanized" production and more simplistic lyrical ideas than expected from the Italian gothic metal sextet. However, I enjoyed it a lot. I don’t consider it on par with their early work, but it’s a well crafted rock album, energetic and life-affirming. I never thought I would use this word to describe their music, but Lacuna Coil is FUN to listen to in here. The guitars sound sharper and miss Scabbia spices up her usual weary vocal method with scathing one-liners of a dance diva.

04 Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

播放Daniel is one of the most stunning songs ever written. If she can keep up with these standards she has set for herself on this record and throw us more ethereal, nocturnal pop of such calibre in the future, I will happily declare myself a proper fan. Go girl.

    03 Muse - The Resistance

I harbor contradictory feelings towards Muse. There are days when I’m convinced that they are incorrigible, hypocritical bitches, making money off of the Twilight soundtrack, while acting as if it was a touch of irony from their part to appear on it; then there are days when I have to admit that not many bands in the world right now do their thing better than they do. Fortunately with Muse I’m not hindered by the issue of separating the artist from the music they make. If I was, or I'd let myself be, I’d miss out on a lot. And whoever deliberately misses out on Muse’s delicious brand of flamboyant stadium rock is a fool.

02 Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends

I listened to this album so much over the past six months that I kind of neglected the fact that it was officially released in June, 2008, and I just happened to be late to the party. Which is why in my memory it will be associated with the summer of 2009.

01 The Veils - Sun Gangs

Not a big surprise. Now, I don’t think it’s the most consistent LP of the year, but it offers some of the best songwriting from Finn Andrews so far and that’s saying something. Nothing from Viva La Vida or The Resistance reaches the depth and timelessness of Sit Down by the Fire, the soaring Jeff Buckley-esque beauty of The Letter or the gloomy atmospherics of Larkspur. Andrews’ voice and its range are simply divine throughout – he alternates between tenor and baritone, drama and tenderness, sensual belting (It Hits Deep) and cracking animalistic screams (Killed by the Boom), and every nuance of mood and emotion in his complex vocalizing is brought to the fore thanks to the impeccable production by Graham Sutton and Bernard Butler. An interesting note: Canadian folk-songstress Basia Bulat sings backing vocals on The House She Lived In and Scarecrow.

This year has been a year of amazing discoveries for me (new and old artists) and a year of radical changes (both positive and negative). When 2008 was left fairly pale and uneventful in comparison, I will always remember 2009 in music.

  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 4

    151. Why? Rubber Traits
I love the subtle stuff going in the background of this song, especially the vocals between 1:00 and 1:30.

    152. Animal Collective - Safer
Animal Collective doesn't make songs this weird anymore, unfortunately. There is so much to love here: the looping piano, the assorted screaming ("I'M ALRIIIIIIGHT!" and "Now don't get too freaky on me!"). Also, my last.fm username comes from this song, so I couldn't not include it.

    153. Joanna Newsom - 播放Sawdust & Diamonds
If you've been paying attention you'll notice that every track from Ys is on this list. If I had to get rid of one, I guess it would be this one, but that doesn't mean it's not an incredibly good song. The highlight: "I wasn't born of a whistle or milked from a thistle at twilight. No, I was all horns and thorns, sprung out fully-formed, knock-kneed and upright. So enough of this terror, we deserve to know light and grow evermore lighter and lighter..."

    154. And So I Watch You From Afar - 播放Set Guitars to Kill
Wow, this is the most in-your-face post-rock song of recent times. It will blow you away. I expect more great things to come from these guys.

    155. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Maybe the best bassline of the decade.

    156. The Knife - 播放Silent Shout
This is such a sexy song, especially the synth solo.

    157. Rilo Kiley - Silver Lining
Speaking of sexy, how about that Jenny Lewis's voice?

    158. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - 播放The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
Alec Ounsworth's voice, not so much. But this is an amazing song.

Skin Of The Night
This would be a great song to drive around at night to, especially if it's windy.

    160. Bon Iver - Skinny Love
I actually prefer Re: Stacks to this, but they're both really good songs.

    161. Passion Pit - 播放Sleepyhead
When the EP came out, I listened to this song nonstop. It's funny how Passion Pit seems to be everywhere now. Manners isn't as good as Chunk of Change, but I'm glad they've gained popularity.

    162. Mew - 播放Snow Brigade
Sweet chorus, even if the lyrics are a bit stalkerish. (Much like 播放156, actually.)

    163. Final Fantasy - 播放Song Song Song
I can't tell whether that's pizzicato at the beginning (he didn't play this song when I saw him live), but however he does it, it's awesome. Almost as awesome as the ending.

    164. Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde
I think this album is slightly overrated (although the lyrics are uniformly excellent), but this track stands out. Very shoegazey.

    165. Mew - 播放Special
This song is like a rocket through me. I don't listen to Mew enough, but every time I do, I'm impressed by them.

    166. Muse - 播放Starlight
I can see how a lot of Muse fans hate this. I don't listen to it much anymore (Origin Of Symmetry is more lasting), but for a time I listened to it incessantly.

    167. Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is the Move
Angel Deradoorian joining Dirty Projectors was the best thing that ever happened to them, as evidenced by Bitte Orca.

    168. Oasis - 播放Stop Crying Your Heart Out
Admittedly, Heathen Chemistry is far from the best Oasis album, but this song gets me every time.

    169. Rachael Yamagata - Sunday Afternoon
Not as immediately appealing as the majority of Happenstance, but it really makes use of her smoky vocals, particularly the climax.

    170. Fuck Buttons - Surf Solar
Blistering yet danceable. Fuck Buttons is one of the most original bands out there.

    171. The Decemberists - The Tain (Parts I, II, III, IV, V)
Considering how popular The Decemberists are, you'd think this would be better-known. It's totally epic, even though I can't see much of a connection with the Irish mythological epic it's named after.

    172. Franz Ferdinand - 播放Take Me Out
When I first heard this on the radio, I scrambled to find out who this band was. I suspect I wasn't the only one.

    173. Kaki King - 播放These Are The Armies Of The Tyrannized
Very Mogwai-ish, which is a good thing.

    174. Los Campesinos! This Is How You Spell "HAHAHA, We Destroyed The Hopes And Dreams Of A Generation Of Faux-Romantics"
"We have to take the car 'cause the bike's on fire!"

    175. Final Fantasy - 播放This Is the Dream of Win & Regine
The way Owen Pallett sings "I tried, and tried, and tried to keep the crowds away" is heart-breakingly plaintive.

    176. Muse - Time Is Running Out
Their danciest song, which sort of foreshadowed the direction they went with Black Holes and Revelations.

    177. MGMT - 播放Time to Pretend
Really, there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said.

    178. Battles - Tonto
Atlas is the best song from Mirrored, by a long shot, but this is much more complex. The ending is a bit slow, but there's so much going on in the first half.

    179. The Antlers - 播放Two
I pretty much knew in February that Merriweather Post Pavilion was going to be my favourite album of 2009, but in the race for second place, I didn't expect a band I had never listened to before to win. Hospice is mind-blowingly good, though. Most of the compositions are pretty expansive, but this one's really tight, and it works well.

    180. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
The video is a bit creepy (see: the uncanny valley), but I always thought Grizzly Bear was a bit creepy anyway.

    181. Spoon - The Underdog
In the wrong hands, this song could end up being pretty campy, especially the horns, but this is Spoon.

    182. Dirty Projectors - Useful Chamber
I'm glad Dirty Projectors haven't lost ALL their wacky experimentalism.

    183. The Mars Volta - Viscera Eyes
I wish you could love a song more than once on last.fm.

    184. The Antlers - 播放Wake
One of the expansive compositions from Hospice. Highlights: "letting people iiiiiiiiin," the "don't be scared to speak..." section, and of course the ending.

    185. Animal Collective - Water Curses
Where to start? First of all, this is one of the best EPs I've ever heard. It's got three really strong tracks, and Seal Eyeing isn't bad either. But this track stands out. It's incredibly joyful (I mean, it has the lyric "I want to be like water and slip into your throat and make you feel alive and good"), and there's so much good stuff going on - the jagged synthesizer (or whatever it is) in the background during the "I don't think you know just what you're doing" section drives me crazy. It's really too bad that it would be pretty much impossible to play live.

    186. Rachel's - Water From the Same Source
This song was used in the movie Hancock, for some reason. I didn't complain, though.

    187. Yndi Halda - 播放We Flood Empty Lakes
It's no 播放Illuminate My Heart, My Darling!, but still awesome. A one-minute condensed version of this song was used in an ad for Fuel TV, and it wasn't half bad, despite being 11 minutes shorter than the original.

    188. Coheed and Cambria - 播放Welcome Home
    Some seriously awesome solos.

    189. Dan Deacon - 播放Wham City
The a cappella recapitulation of the chorus near the end never fails to bring a smile to my face. The beginning is kind of reminiscent of 播放In C.

    190. Stars - 播放What I'm Trying to Say
Ultra-catchy, and the lyrics are based on a fairly original conceit, which is rare for a love song.

When We Were Younger & Better
This should be a movie soundtrack.

    192. Dido - 播放White Flag
Dido has about three good songs, and one incredible song (this one, naturally).

    193. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
Such harmonies! I try not to think about the lyrics when I listen to this song though, because they're so depressing and the music is so calming.

    194. Rachael Yamagata - 播放Worn Me Down
Rachael Yamagata basically doesn't have any songs I really dislike, because her voice is so good, but this is her best.

    195. Los Campesinos! You! Me! Dancing!
Wow, so twee. I love the spoken-word bit at the end: "And we're all like how Rousseau depicts man in the state of nature: we're undeveloped, we're ignorant, we're stupid, but we're happy").

    196. Stars - 播放Your Ex-Lover Is Dead
"And all of the time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember your name."

    197.MGMT - 播放The Youth
This track kind of got overlooked with the popularity of 播放Kids and 播放Time to Pretend, but it's my favourite song from the album. The chorus makes it a perfect youth anthem.

    198. Feist - 1234
It must suck for Sally Seltmann, who basically wrote this song, to see how popular Feist has become because of it. I'm just glad it exists, though.

    199. Mew - 播放156
My favourite Mew song. "Don't you just love goodbyes?"

    200. Yeasayer - 2080
This must be the best Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel song I've ever heard!

  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 3

    101. Muse - Map Of Your Head
Impressively, this is one of two Muse B-sides on the list, showing the depth of their catalogue.

    102. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 播放Maps
This was released back in 2003 and it still feels fresh.

    103. Death Cab for Cutie - 播放Marching Bands of Manhattan
Okay, the lyrics are mostly cringe-worthy (except for the part about living like a hermit in your own head), but it's a great tune.

    104. Oceansize - Massive Bereavement
Oceansize is probably the most underrated band of our time. The climax of this song is mind-blowing.

    105. Slow Club - Me and You
"I've got a feeling someone else is reading the letters I wrote to you."
"Well my pet's illiterate and I live alone, so it's someone in betwixt of me and you."

    106. The Mars Volta - Meccamputechture
They manage to make a saxophone sound menacing, which is an accomplishment in itself.

    107. Oceansize - Meredith
The first Oceansize song I really loved. Apparently this was on The O.C.?

    108. The National - Mistaken for Strangers
It's hard for The National to make a really bad song, because Matt Berninger's voice is so awesome, but the songwriting on this one stands out.

    109. Frightened Rabbit - 播放The Modern Leper
    An overwhelmingly good track.

    110. Joanna Newsom - 播放Monkey & Bear
Lyrically, this is Joanna Newsom's most cohesive song. It tells an interesting story, which unlike most of her songs is fairly easy to follow.

    111. Animal Collective - My Girls
Animal Collective: it's not just for hipsters anymore!

    112. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
I can't decide whether this or White Winter Hymnal is their best song. This is the more complex of the two, though.

    113. The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
The vocals on this song are just bursting with joy. It's hard not to smile when you listen to it.

    114. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Youthful idealism tinged with sorrow in the form of a song.

    115. Queens of the Stone Age - 播放No One Knows
    That riff!

    116. Radiohead - Nude
I'm just glad that when I google this I don't get pictures of Thom Yorke naked.
("You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking...")

    117. The Decemberists - 播放O Valencia!
Colin Meloy's voice is always kind of flat, but it's got a certain charm, especially on this song.

    118. Grizzly Bear - On a Neck, On a Spit
These guys sure can write songs. Everything on this song is put together perfectly, but the drumming stands out.

    119. Regina Spektor - 播放On the Radio
This song reminds me how great "November Rain" is. Also, it's got some of Regina Spektor's most touching lyrics.

    120. Oceansize - One Day All This Could Be Yours
    Chilling.

    121. Joanna Newsom - 播放Only Skin
The best song on the best album of the decade. I can't possibly say enough good things about it.

    122. Oceansize - Ornament/the Last Wrongs
If you only listen to one Oceansize song, make it this one. But really, you should listen to everything they've ever recorded.

    123. Okkervil River - Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe
Yet again, Will Sheff's impassioned vocals make this song.

    124. Audioslave - 播放Out Of Exile
    Awesome solo.

    125. Hot Chip - 播放Over And Over
    The joy of repetition.

    126. Björk - 播放Pagan Poetry
One of the best videos of the decade, for one of the best tracks.

    127. of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Too many good lyrics to list. The 12 minutes go by like 4.

    128. Regina Spektor - Pavlov's Daughter
The best of her early songs, on which her quirkiness really comes through.

    129. Joanna Newsom - 播放Peach, Plum, Pear
Best harpsichord solo since The Art of the Fugue?

    130. The Shins - Phantom Limb
Well, The Shins didn't change my life, but this is a great song.

    131. Muse - Plug In Baby
Sure, it's just an arpeggio, but I bet you've never come up with a riff this good.

    132. Coldplay - 播放Politik
This is from when Coldplay used to write good songs. Ah, those were the days.

    133. Explosions in the Sky - 播放A Poor Man's Memory
A lot of EITS songs leave me cold, but I really like this (and 播放Have You Passed Through This Night?).

    134. Ludovico Einaudi - 播放Primavera
This is the only classical song on my list - I mean, the 21st century isn't exactly known for its classical music. Einaudi obviously takes a cue from Vivaldi, because you can hear the influence of the cascading strings from the last movement of Summer (not Spring, ironically) on this track.

    135. Animal Collective - 播放The Purple Bottle
Animal Collective's lyrics are somehow obtuse and direct at the same time, especially in their love songs: "Sometimes I'm naked and thank God sometimes you're naked, well hello." The last couple minutes of this song are incredible.

    136. The Fiery Furnaces - Quay Cur
This is the first Fiery Furnaces song I heard, and I was hooked after about 30 seconds.

    137. Carla Bruni - 播放Quelqu'un m'a dit
I'm willing to bet that Michelle Obama couldn't write a song this good.

    138. Bon Iver - Re: Stacks
"This is not the sound of a new man or a crispy realization"

    139. Regina Spektor - Real Love
I don't listen to many covers, and this is the only one on my list. But damn, the crescendo at the end is soulful.

    140. Mates of State - The Re-Arranger
Again, how am I the only one who really loves Re-Arrange Us?

    141. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
The best song on the album, and it's an amazing album.

    142. Muse - Recess
Most bands would kill to have a bassline like this on an A-side or an album track, let alone a B-side.

    143. Radiohead - 播放Reckoner
Thom Yorke singing "Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore..." gives me goosebumps every time.

    144. The Strokes - 播放Reptilia
Incredibly catchy. This is the song that made me pay attention to the Strokes.

    145. Portishead - The Rip
Haunting. The keyboards and general droniness at the end combine perfectly with Beth Gibbons' vocals.

    146. Akron/Family - River
What an uplifting song. It's even more awesome live, like every Akron/Family song. (Seriously, their live show is like a big party.)

    147. Bright Eyes - Road to Joy
Okay, it's pretty lazy to use Ode to Joy as the basis for a song, but Conor Oberst does magical things with it.

    148. Islands - 播放Rough Gem
This is what cotton candy would be like in the form of music.

    149. The Mars Volta - 播放Roulette Dares (The Haunt of)
Surprisingly, since De-Loused in the Comatorium is my favourite Mars Volta album, this is the only song from it on my list. The "exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed" refrain is stunning.

    150. Au - 播放RR vs. D
This sounds like the kind of song WHY? would write, and that's a good thing. It also has pretty much the best use of handclaps in an indie song I've heard.

  • Intieme optredens in Utrechtse huiskamer

Sun 13 Dec – Live In The Living: Awkward I, Corbelijn & Merinde
