• the finest albums of 2009

    2009年 12月 16日, 5:07 作者:therewasatime

hi, i'm not too good at introducing these, so i'll start with a poem:

another year has come and past,
and the tunes this year have been a blast
this is my list; the cream of the crop
so let's see what album ends up on top!

    (sorry)

    10)Morrissey - Years of Refusal

steven patrick's most recent offering (aside from the b-side collection Swords, which i'll be coming back to later in the best tracks of the year) is a fantastic rock n' roll record. yes, lots of hard (cock?) rock guitar + sometimes painful lyrics (come on, moz. the lyrics in 播放I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris are fucking awful.) BUT you just gotta have fun with it.

    9)The Horrors - Primary Colours

after a whole lot of musical growth since their debut Strange House, the band has taken cues from The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and The Cure to throw together a fantastic sophomore release.

8)The Thermals - Now We Can See

i actually just bought the album like...two months ago. but it's really good. When I Died is a great opener, up to par (i'd say) with 播放Here's Your Future off The Body, The Blood, The Machine, although i'm sure no one else will agree with me on that.

7)Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything To Nothing

no one else likes this band, but fuck them. andy hull + co's sophomore release is almost too clean sounding, especially when compared with Like A Virgin Loosing A Child, but the songs as a whole are so much stronger. the riff in Pride is up to par with the best from Led Zeppelin. holla.

    6)Japandroids - Post-Nothing

i originally dismissed the band as pitchfork wank, HOWEVER, post-nothing is actually a fantastic debut. the album is chock full of wonderful guitars, energetic drums and the songs have more hooks than there are fish in the sea. super fun and highly recommended.

5)The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

fuck pitchfork for hating on this album. not as good as Picaresque, but it's not really trying to be. instead of focusing on great individual songs, the band proves here that the sum is greater than the parts. hazards a sprawling 17 song album about love and death. and metal.

    4)Silversun Pickups - Swoon

if i didn't know better, i'd think it's 1992. harkening back to the lush sounds of Loveless and Siamese Dream with updated riffage, silversun pickups managed to put together a pretty solid release. bonus track Ne Plus Ultra is better than the entire b-side of the album.

    3)Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen

one ofSaddle Creek's flagship bands, cursive continues to make great music years into their career. a monstrous improvement from the lackluster Happy Hollow and bolstering songs like From The Hips, I Couldn't Love You, Caveman and the epic what have i done?[/track], cursive shows the doubters that they can still pack a punch.

    2)M. Ward - [album artist=m. ward]hold time

fuck yeah folk. matt's second best album, only topped by Post-War, shows that his songwriting post She & Him (sartist]zooey deschanel still pops up on two tracks) is still fantastic. the production is pristine and his guitar work (as if anyone doubted) is second to none.

    1)The Antlers - Hospice

i'm not too original for having this on the top of my list; as many others already have and many more will, but the album deserves as much recognition as possible.

there's not much i can really say that hasn't already been said about this album already. epic, beautiful, heartbreaking; the album hasn't gotten any less desolate and stunning since i first listened to it, and i doubt it will.

    TOP TRACKS OF '09

    10)Japandroids - 播放Crazy/Forever
9)Silversun Pickups - 播放There's No Secrets This Year
    8)Morrissey - 播放Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice
7)Cymbals Eat Guitars - ...and the Hazy Sea
6)Paul Westerberg - Love On The Wing
5)The Decemberists - 播放The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid
    4)The Antlers - 播放Epilogue
3)M. Ward - 播放Stars of Leo
2)Jeremy Enigk - Late of Camera
    1)Cursive - What Have I Done?

and at by the looks of it, 2010 should be fantastic. with releases coming from Bright Eyes, The Walkmen, Sigur Ros, The National, and Titus Andronicus (to name a few), i'm sure 2010 will be full of wonderful music as well.
  • Best Albums of 2009!!

    2009年 12月 13日, 5:08 作者:spacehxc

2009 was an awesome year for music, so I have made a more extensive list than I usually make. Comment and let me know what your top 5/10/20 or whatever you want to do are! If anyone would like any of these albums I can upload them and give a link to download, so let me know!

    20. TonikomThe Sniper’s Veil

The genre of this album is hard to pin down. It is clearly Electronic, although it has hints of IDM, drum and bass, and industrial. What makes her stick out in my mind is her ability to write extremely catchy drum beats with vocal samples over the top of it. Very good and very underrated.

    19. Bill CallahanSometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle

The easiest thing to call this would be alt-country/folk, but its a little to weird to pigeonhole into any single category. The simplicity of his musical backing and the strangeness of his voice and cadence is what makes this a memorable album. Each time I listen to it I notice something different, even though at first glance everything would appear to be on the surface.

    18. CicadaRoulette

Straight up electropop. Sounds like what Ladytron might sound like if they decided to just play synths the entire time with catchy pop hooks over the top. The entire album kind of blends together into one song, which could be a complaint as well as a compliment.

    17. The FieldYesterday and Today

This was somewhat of a disappointment for me. The three tracks in the middle are amazing, but tracks 1,2 and 6 are forgettable. If those tracks had been as good as the three in the middle then this would hands down be my favorite album of the year. Even though the album as a whole was a disappointment, the song Leave It is my favorite song of the year, and one of my favorite songs of the decade easily.

    16. The Twilight SadForget The Night Ahead

I wasn't really sold on this band until I saw them live with Frightened Rabbit in L.A. After seeing them I gave this album a second chance and noticed a lot of things that I hadn't upon first listen. This is a perfect album to listen to when Fall is turning into winter, as the entire album deals with changing into something that you don't necessarily want to.

    15. Jeremy EnigkOK Bear

Although it doesn't have the orchestration of World Waits, it still has the brilliant songwriting of Sunny Day Real Eastate frontman Jeremy Enigk. In some ways I prefer the stripped down nature of this album as compared to his previous work, as it lets the songs themselves shine.

    14. Plastik Joy3:03

Totally out of left field for me, I just randomly downloaded this off of a blog I frequent because I thought the name was interesting. It basically sounds like Dntel's best album, Life is Full of Possibilities, but it is a bit more straightforward in its vocal and melodic hooks. Incredibly enough the album itself conveys a sense of analogue warmth even though the entire thing is electronic. I look forward to hearing what these guys put out next.

    13. The Wooden BirdsMagnolia

Sometimes simple is good, in that too much polish and fanfare can drown out the core of a song, which is its melody. The Wooden Birds strip songs down to their cores, usually only using male and female voice, guitar, and minimal rhythmic accompaniment. The product is a very solid album with no filler.

    12. The Pains of Being Pure at HeartThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Although this is basically just Jesus and the Mary Chain/My Bloody Valentine worship, it is very good worship. Sometimes you don't need to be incredibly unique to release a very good album. The album itself is buried in a layer of fuzzy guitars and guy/girl vocals, and never overstays its welcome. Sometimes the shortness of an album is something to be appreciated.

    11. WHY?Eskimo Snow

Although Alopecia is a better album, Eskimo Snow has very good moments as well. For those not familiar with the band they are pseudo hip-hop/spoken word/indie rock, which sounds like a terrible combination but is something that you have to hear and make up your own mind about. I saw Why? Live about a month ago, and it was as good of a show that anyone could ask for.

    10. Fuck ButtonsTarot Sport

While their first album focuses on walls of noise and harsh vocals, Tarot Sport cuts out the abrasiveness and ramps up the melody. The end result is an album that in its repetition offers a number of earworms that are hard to get out of your head, as well as high amounts of repetition that become mesmerizing. I used the word repetition three times in this review.

    9. Mount EerieWind’s Poem

Although I saw this album performed in its entirety, and it was absolutley awful, the recording remains a high point of 2009. This is what happens when Lo Fi folk mixes with Lo Fi black metal. I am surprised that no one has though of doing this before now, because as odd as it may seem at first glance the styles are quite complimentary.

    8. DeloreanAyrton Senna

Although this is only a 5 song EP, it really makes an impression. It conveys an infectious joyful exuberance, and in my opinion is nearly impossible for anyone to not enjoy. Sounds like what might happen if you mixed Air France with Cut Copy.

    7. MartynGreat Lengths

I downloaded this album on a whim, and it resulted in my downloading dozens of dubstep comps and albums. My roommates can attest to the fact that Dubstep was about 30% of what I listened to all year. While some are familiar with dubstep through Burial, who's shuffle beat and weepy vocal samples make you feel like you are driving through the rain, Martyn conveys an opposite feeling. The songs themselves are upbeat, and very memorable. I recommend listening to this, and any dubstep really, loud and with the bass cranked.

    6. God Help The GirlGod Help The Girl

I have always liked Belle and Sebastian, but always felt for every great song they had 2 to 3 that were easily forgettable. This album is a side project of Stuart Murdock from Belle and Sebastian, who held open auditions for female singers when forming the group. What we get here is his great songwriting through the voice of 3 very capable singers. Ironically enough they Belle and Sebastian covers on this album outshine the originals by far.

    5. Dirty ProjectorsBitte Orca

At First listen I wasn't to sure about this album. "Stillness is the Move" stuck out to me with its amazing melody, but it took me a couple of listens to appreciate the complex yet catchy pop sensibility of the rest of the album. This is definately a grower, and I would recommmend if you don't like it upon first listen, keep it around for a while and see if you warm up to it after a couple of listens.

    4. The Whitest Boy AliveRules

This group was formed with a very basic concept in mind. What they set out to do was to play dance music in its simplest form, with drums, bass, guitar, and some synth here and there. What some people would call boring I would call fantastic. What the group manages to do is take the core of dance music, 4/4 beat and the bassline, and morph it into very simple yet effective songs. The simplicity is what makes this stand apart from any other dance act.

    3. MewNo More Stories are Told Today, I’m Sorry, They Washed Away

Kind of hard to describe, but very very good. Sounds like what would happen if Passion Pit stopped playing electropop and started playing indie rock. I'm havinga hard time coming up with a description for this one, just listen to it!

    2. PhoenixWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

In Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix has created the perfect pop album. Each song follows a stringent structure and format, which might lead one to believe that they album would convey a sense of sameness throughout. That couldn't be further from the truth. Phoenix, by telling themselves that they were going to only write 3:00-4:30 minute pop songs, have flourished rather than blundered. One only needs to listen to the rise ans fall of the chorus in "1901" to know what I am talking about. Even the seemingly filler song in the middle of the album has an amazing payoff in the end.

    1. Fever RayFever Ray

An incredibly dark and mysterious album, which should come as no surprise since its coming from The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson. She takes the enigma of The Knife and covers it in blackness. Forget Black Metal, this is the darkest album that I have ever heard. It is incredibly rewarding on multiple listens, in that it always has something new. And while it conveys all these dark emotional reactions, it also manages to be subtle and never beats you over the head with it.

Some of my favorite releases this year were Mixes/Compilations, and since they aren't albums they don't really belong on the list. That being said, I really loved them so I am going to mention them here.

    5. Hercules and Love Affair - Sidetracked

A very good complilation album, blending some disco with classic house music.

    4. 5: Five Years of Hyperdub

For anyone who is interested in dubstep, this complilation is absolutely essential. It surveys the 5 year history of the quintessential dubstep label, Hyperdub, and puts together a comp that flows incredibly well. From the wobble of Burial to the technicality of 2562, every sub genre of dub is represented on the comp. Highly recommended.

    3. Ada - Adaptations Mixtape #1

Ada is one of my absolute favorite Electronic musicians/DJs, and this comp is her first release in 5 years save for a couple singles released here and there. It remixes a lot of tracks from her astounding album Blondie and mixes it with various other microhouse tracks.

    2. Dark Was The Night

I'm pretty sure everyone knows what this is. Basically a who's who in indie rock. Usually when so many musicians of this calebver work together you get a lot of throwaway tracks that didn't make the album or half assed covers, but on this compilation the groups involved submitted some of their best material. Very very good stuff.

    1. Kompakt Total 10

Kompakt is my favorite electronic label by far, and this comp is a good introduction to them for anyone who might be interested. Every year they release a comp, and this is their 10th anniversery, so the tracks on this are of the highest quality. This is something that I could listen to every week and it would never get old, because of the variation of styles represented.

As far as metal goes not much really caught my ear this year. Probably due to the fact that I am getting more and more into electronic music so I find myself downloading less and less metal. However there were a couple albums that caught my attention.

    5. BehemothEvangilion

They have really redeemed themselves after the rotten shitfest that was their previous album, The Apostasy. The punch that the first three tracks delivered is their best material since demigod, but it kind of wanes after that.

    4. EnsiferumFrom Afar
Similar to Behemoth, I wasn't impressed with Ensiferum's previous album, Victory Songs. This one however, is way better. Since we will probably never see another Wintersun album, this will have to do.

    3. GorgorothQuantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt

A step back towards their raw black roots, this album is harsh and full of hate, exactly what anyone would want from a Gorgoroth album. While I'm not one for purposely making your recordings sound terrible in order to get some black metal cred, I think the stripped down approach really serves Gorgoroth well.

    2. Glorior BelliMeet Us at the Southern Sign

This isa hard one to place. It sounds similar to Enslaved, but only if enslaved were from Oklahoma. It has a grim blackness about it, but also a melodic undercurrent that keeps it from being too dark. This is what I imagine Earth would sound like if they decided to play black metal.

    1.KatatoniaNight Is The New Day

Katatonia is more rock then metal anymore, but that has only allowed them to write more memorable songs. this is a very depressing album, which is what they are best at. I wish more bands would make music like this.

This year I spent a lot of time getting music that came out before 2009, so it is interesting to look at my most listened to artists on last.fm for the year. Here is a quickplaycount of my top 10 most listened to artists in 2009.

    1. Autechre - 375

I have Liked Autechre for a long time, But this year I really got into the stuff in between their major albums. Basically Autechre from 1993 - 1999 is some of my favorite music ever made. Its insance because basically every track they made in that time period is good if not great. After 1999 they went from being an ambient electronic group into more abstract territory, doing experiments with time signuratures and pushing the boundaries of what people call music. While I enjoy the exploratory nature of their more recent works, nothing beats the clash of complexity and simple melodies that made their early work so memorable.

    2. Frightened Rabbit - 361
Even though they didn't release anything in 2009, I still find myself listening to both of their albums at least once a month. While Midnite Organ Fight is an awesome album, nothing beats the grittiness of Sings the Greys. There is a quality to it that makes it seem organic and human, where as Midnight Organ Fight can come off sounding a bit too polished. Also Sings the Greys is an unforgetable album from start to finish, where Midnight Organ Fight kind of veers off towards the end for me.

    3. Meshuggah - 333

Even though my metal listening habits have waned a bit in the past year, I still listen to a lot of meshuggah. This should come to no surprise for anyone that knows me. About once every 2 months I find myself listening to the entire discography besides their terrible first demo and album.

    4. Public Enemy - 289

I have always liked Public Enemy, but for some reason never got any of their material for this year. The sample heavy textures of the music itself make it interesting even upon multiple listens. Their 3 albums in the late 80's early 90's are definately my favorite and their best in my opinion. I have to admit though that I always skip the Flava Flav songs, because all they are is him going "ITS THE FLAVA FLAV MY NAMES FLAV I GOT FLAV FLAVAAA".

    5. Mount Eerie - 244

This guy releases a ton of material, and I am a sucker for discographies on artists that I really enjoy. Even though he does release an insane amount of songs every year, the quality of them never seems to suffer. However seeing him live in California was probably the biggest letdown I have ever had when seeing someone play live. It was a terrible terrible show, but I haven't let it tarnish my appreciation for the recordings.

    6. Boards of Canada - 243

This is a group that will probably be in my top 20 most listened to artists every year. The ambient nature of the music lets you listen and block it out, but its not so simple that its not interesting when you are actually listening.

    7. Fever Ray - 223

After listening to her amazing debut album for a couple of months I tracked down all of the singles and remixes, which accounts for a lot of the 223 plays. Sometimes remixes are terrible, but Fever Ray has chosen very good people to work with and 90% of them are really really good.

    8. The National - 218

I got tired of waiting for a followup to my favorite album of 2007, Boxer, so I listened to a lot of their earlier material/eps/singles this year. While non of them are as a whole as good as Boxer, There are a lot of songs that are on par with those on the album proper.

    9. Nine Inch Nails - 208

I was thinking about how Nine Inch Nails is the band I have listened to regularly for the longest. I got The Downward Spiral when I was 12, so I have been listening to them for 14 years. That is insane. While a lot of the time I listen to them for nostalgic purposes, I have to admit I still really like them/him.

    10. Aphex Twin - 199

Most of these plays is do to the fact that for about 2 months i Listened to Selected Ambient Works 85-92 about oncea week. While I enjoy most of his discography, nothing beats his early material.

Mon 28 Sep – Sunny Day Real Estate, The Jealous Sound

Now I don't typically write about the shows I go to, or last.fm journal entries, for a simple reason.

How the show went was your opinion.
No one gives a shit about anyone else's opinion ever.
That's why this site is one of my favorites.
No one gives a shit about the music you listen to.
But the thing is, people are so defensive about their own musical tastes, so that when they are attacked, they feel attacked on a personal level. When I mock what I feel is your poor taste in music, you feel as if it's an attack on your character.

But what you're forgetting is that what you feel is good music is your opinion. Myself, mocking your taste in music, is my own, just as worthless opinion.

In the end, you're angry, and I'm still just fine.
All because of an opinion that no one cares about.

But I digress, in this little nostalgic review I'm going to go ahead and just try to write about how it went, and also how I felt about it, the latter which is only for my own amusement, and worthless to you.

Although I did most definitely enjoy it. This show was legendary, and deserves to be recorded.

Going to the House of Blues, just like the Avalon, is always a complete shit show. Not because I was coming from Maine, but because the House of Blues butt-fucks Fenway stadium.

And the 28th was a Red Sox game. Go Sox, but seriously?
40 dollars for parking anywhere remotely close to the House of Blues.
And that was only after you got Michael Vick to fight your way through traffic.

We found a spot for 15 and took the T.

    Doors opened at 7.
    Arrived at 7:30.

I was thankful there was still a line and I hadn't missed anything.
The crowd, the people who showed up. That was pretty "LOL". It was a mashup of the expected old school Emo types, comparable to the ones from your scene sucks, and hipsters.

I would say about 3/4 of the men there were the exact same 5"7 dark haired, bearded, short haired, thick rimmed glasses, dark wash jeans, black joy division tshirt, carabiner, and chubby. Chubby from too much PBRs. Chubby for who knows why.

And then there were the hipsters. These were the younger types, for the most part. I swear I saw a handful of kids who must've been 14 or 15. Seriously? They didn't know the words. They didn't look like they were enjoying themselves, and I just wanted to hit them.

And then there was that one scenester.
The one girl who was allowed to have a nice camera.
Where everyone else had to sneak in their pocket sized digicams.
I had to leave my SLR in the car or face a 5 dollar coat check, we'll hold this for you, fee.
She was probably with the local paper.
Regardless, it looked like she only had a kit lens. Her shots probably sucked, and she obviously wasn't there out of tribute to what Sunny Day, and to a lesser extent, Blair Shehan, have contributed to the genre.

Pedro Benito is the guitarist for the Jealous Sound. He adds caliber and experience to their line up. He is formerly the guitarist for Sunday's Best, and they had some pretty flawless content. The Californian is a such a solid release, I have absolutely no complaints.

When The Jealous Sound came up, I was really excited.
I would probably say that my favorite Emo band is Knapsack.
    The problem?

I only met 2 people who had heard of Knapsack.
Sure, people were here because Sunny Day Real Estate are not only old school Emo kings, granted that of a later wave, but were extremely influential to so many groups and people.
    So was Knapsack!

No people didn't care much for The Jealous Sound. And I mean, that's understandable. They're much more accessible than Knapsack was. They have synth, and not in a Mass Movement Of the Moth kind of way. It's more in a Snow Patrol / The Postal Service kind of way. I mean, for Christ's sake, I heard they toured with Death Cab for Cutie. Sure, I wasn't entirely stoked that No Knife toured with Jimmy Eat World extensively, but Death Cab? It really just goes to show the kind of audience that The Jealous Sound is trying to reach.

Certianly not the Knapsack audience. The kind of audience that wouldn't really know or care if all of the songs were kind of generic or moderately cliche or repetitive. You know, the Death Cab audience.

Most my love for The Jealous Sound is out of a nostalgia for Knapsack and a genuine interest in anything that Blair Shehan does. The music is pretty good, I suppose, hit and miss. Ultimately, it's reception was as such.
I was the only person I saw who knew all the words to all the songs.
Chalk me up as another Death Cab faggot, I don't' care. I enjoyed myself.

Being two people away from Blair was all I could ask for, and it set me up to later be two people away from Jeremy Enigk.

The most impressive part of The Jealous Sound's set was their show closer. Unbeknown to me, their staple song is 播放Anxious Arms, which also happens to be my favorite song. I was relieved and stoked that they actually played it, but on the final run of the chorus, Blair kicked it up an octave, strained his voice, and Knapsacked out the rest of the song. I was beyond happiness at that point. This exact style was the style I grew to love, and he gave it his all.

And that was the closest to Knapsack that I'll ever get.
And I'm fortunate I got that much.

Sunny Day was up next, and this is when people started coming out of the woodwork. The annoying drunk Canadian was still near me, and the same with the seemingly 14 year old hipster girl directly in front of me.
She didn't know any of the words to any of the songs as far as I knew, or perhaps her braces did not permit her to sing.
Regardless, it looks like she enjoyed herself. She danced a little, and it was cute...In a infantile, isn't it past your bedtime kind of way.

The density of the people around me increased slightly. Some middle aged woman with a Tool shirt appeared. I think she may have been lost.

But when they played, oh when they played, did you see the die hard Sunny Day fans. This made the atmosphere absolutely thick with gleeful nostalgia. So many wide smiles. So many singing mouths and shining eyes. Most of us were up front, from what I could tell.

A girl my own age, surprisingly enough, knew every single word to every single song. It was mostly mid 20 somethings who knew all the words. It was nice to have someone in my own age group know where it's at.

Side note : She was probably a 7, if I had to rate her. Knowing every word to all the Sunny Day songs certainly influenced this score.

Dan Hoerner, guitarist of Sunny Day left the biggest impression on me. I loved watching him. I had gotten this impression from reading interviews discussing the reunion, that he was the most excited and happy about this event. You could tell too by his performance that he, along with the crowd, was completely bathing in the nostalgia of the performance. Dan was all smiles, the whole time, he was so happy and had so much fun with the performance, it just kind of put me in an even better mood. Twice he made sure to tell us how much this meant to him, and how pumped he was that we were enjoying it so much.

Their songs were much like they were recorded on the LPs, which was comforting. Although The Jealous sound did some interesting things with their content.

Jeremy Enigk did a good job. He still has the voice of an angel and looked really passionate about his part. He wasn't as animated as Dan per se, but he did his part singing his sad sad songs.

The bass player, Nate Mendel was barely alive. Typical bass player. Good work though.

And honestly, in person, William Goldsmith is Will Ferrell.
I think we locked eyes a couple times.
    Akward.

It's difficult to say where this fits on my scale of shows I've been to.
It wasn't the most fun show I've ever attended.
That goes to the Piebald show I went to before they broke up.
It was just like 30 long time Piebald fans having a blast, and the band.
    Absolutely the best time.

But in terms of the most important.
    This is probably it.
Two very important people to me in the same night.
    Especially Blair.

    And Sunny Day Real Estate.

I wouldn't've missed it for the world.
Living with myself knowing that I missed something like that?
    Impossible.

    I can die happy.

  • 100 Favorite Songs: 2000-2009

    2009年 8月 23日, 18:20 作者:daydream_set

So I guess everyone is aware of Pitchforkmedia.com’s Top 500 Best Songs of the Decade list.

Partly because I disagree fundamentally with a whole hell of a lot of it (e.g. “Crazy In Love” at number 4 [WTF??]) and partly because this is something I’ve been contemplating since I realized the decade was almost over about 4 months ago, I have decided to compile my own list.

As a disclaimer I should go ahead and warn you that my favorite genres are shoegaze, post-punk, and spacey-rock. I also like ambient and some post-rock, although you’ll only find a handful of instrumentals or songs over six minutes herein. The cream of the crop, basically.

New Weird America, metal sub-genres, IDM, alt-country, lo-fi, garage rock, and other such genres are largely ignored or excluded. Although, once again, there are exceptions.

Songs from 2009 are understandably underrepresented compared to the other years in the decade. But of course that’ll all be taken care of in December. Let’s get started:

    026. The Joy Circuit - The Last Place On Earth [2005]

    025. The New PornographersThe Bleeding Heart Show [2005]

The NPs already had several solid power pop albums under their belt by the time follow-up Twin Cinema’s more diverse aspects launched them into a broader layer of music fans. Now, it’s interesting because this is usually when most bands start to lose some of their down-from-day-one fans. Although Twin Cinema was unarguably their most compromised batch of songs up to that moment, this didn’t mean it was full of duds. Chalk it up to the fact that the members of this supergroup had already been recording and playing music for a while prior or chalk it up to something else, but upon its release TC just sounded like the kind of album that the NPs had always been destined to make sooner or later. And this inclination to branch out yielded what is easily their best song to date. It’s a song as grandiose in its composition as it is in its title: “The Bleeding Heart Show”.

The best part is that by the time that glorious harmony of vocals, synths, and everything else is front and center, you’re ready for it. And it could go on forever for all you care, but you know what they say about all good things.

    024. StudioImpossible [2007]

I’ve never listened to the original Shout Out Louds’ version of “Possible,” even though I know I should. But I imagine that “Impossible” is Studio’s interpretation of what that song would sound like if you were dreaming about listening to it. It reminds me a lot of MBV’s “Sometimes” in feel, except it’s sunny side up.

    023. Cat PowerMaybe Not [2003]

The feminine answer to “Imagine.” Enough said. Nobody melts hearts like Chan Marshall.

    022. Poem RocketReurbanization of the Space [2000]

From an album named for the concept, this song is about Guy Debord’s theory of psychogeography. If you don’t know what that is, I’ll leave you to Wiki it. I’ll just tell you this much: no song that’s about it could ever be boring or stale. And “Reurbanization Of The Space” is appropriately a monster. This song basically sounds like a Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth track beefed up on steroids. The guitars are louder and noisier; the smoggy bass would seep through your speakers if it wasn’t so dense; the drumming is the sound of a thousand starving urbanites banging pots and pans on a cracked and decaying street top, the vocals are unapologetically confrontational, and its subject matter is more dense than a comprehensive class in 19th century Western philosophy. What other song contains lyrics like: “Here is the new trend: examine the implications in the public and the private sector … you’re creating the mythology of the Great American City … the space around the buildings is the soul of the city”?

This song is an ideal introduction to this severely underappreciated and clearly brilliant trio. Even though they released a follow up album a few years ago, Psychogeography was kind of like their going away present to a world that did not appreciate them. And it still doesn’t. But there will come a time when people casually list them alongside Joy Division and Sonic Youth as urban rock behemoths. Just watch.

    021. InterpolNYC [2002]

It’s because of songs like this (or maybe in spite of songs like this) that Interpol became one of the most ubiquitous indie rock bands at the beginning of the decade. Either way, “NYC” is the sound of them in their prime. It’s a sound as stark and deliberate as it is delicate and mournful.

    020. At the Drive-InCosmonaut [2000]

Before the band dissolved, they released an album in ROC that completely changed the game in that genre. With “One-Armed Scissor” getting adequate playtime on many major rock stations in 2000, it was the sound of a jolt of electricity punishing FM rock radio for its recent facilitation of the mundane, the unimaginative, and the just flat-out wimpy. Suddenly, post-hardcore music had reached the suburbs. And even though ATD-I was in the process of breaking-up to pursue less cohesive endeavors, Bixler and Rodriguez had positioned themselves as icons of a new generation of hard rock fans. Their wardrobe of tight black shirts and tighter jeans became the uniform for a broad new legion of vocal American kids fed up with “this Lifehouse bullshit.”

Naturally, the music lived up to the image. Especially on ROC. And absolutely nothing was more simultaneously eclectic and intense as the song “Cosmonaut.” The song begins and within three seconds it’s obvious that its already light years ahead of its contemporaries. All of that deep space imagery that had been in their song titles for a while had finally been absorbed into the music itself. A little Unwound here, a little Swervedriver there, and a little Refused way over there. That’s how “Cosmonaut” goes down. “Is it heavier than air?” You best your ass.

    019. Yeasayer2080 [2007]

Spacey, pretty, and with one of the most sinuous bouncing grooves I’ve ever heard in a pop song. Outrageously surreal lyrics too.

    018. National SkylineGlimmer [2009]

NatSky is unsurpassed when Jeff Garber’s voice is spot-on. That key change comes out of nowhere.

    017. M83播放Run Into Flowers [2003]

Anthony Gonzalez makes a career out of building whole otherworldy environments with his multi-instrumental electronica wizardry. And he’s got some pretty celestial tunes to back it up. But “Run Into Flowers” just doesn’t even sound like it could have been composed by mere mortals.

As for all of you wannabe laptop-electronica wunderkinds out there… do us all a favor and listen to this song (and some others like it) before you even try, okay? Not tryin’ to be an asshole or anything; I’m just sayin’.

    016. RadiantWorld [2004]

The rest of this album is available on Last.fm; but it’s too bad it sounds like AROBTTH-era Coldplay. (And that’s being kind.) Thankfully, I’ll always have this song. “World” is powered by chiming post-punk guitar work, thunderous early-U2 drumbeats, tight production, and it’s all held together by Dragan Jakovljevic’s keening voice. The best part is the ascendant ending.

Also, this was the most listened overall song on my Last.fm charts up until very recently.

    015. Film SchoolCompare [2007]

So effortless and simply beautiful that it should be a crime to be this good.

    014. Absinthe Blind播放Vanity Calls [2001]

An undeniably potent song. A standout on an album full of decade-long standouts, “Vanity Calls” has some of the best and most unique atmosphere ever laid to tape. The interplay of Adam’s and Erin’s vocals makes it that much more incandescent.

    013. PJ Harvey播放We Float [2000]

PJ Harvey’s most seductive song of her career. If you’re keeping score at home, that makes this song one of the most seductive of all time. Note that this song is called “We Float” and not “I Float.” Because when she croons the refrain, you’re right there with her.

    012. TV on the RadioYoung Liars [2003]

These Brooklyn iconoclasts are well known for making some of the most accessible experimental music of the decade. When you strip this song to its basic elements – (that is, if you remove all of the woozy atmosphere and advanced synthesizers and just use an acoustic guitar) – it’s still amazing. Plus any song that boasts the lyrics: “Someday suppose that my curious nervousness stills into prescience, clairvoyant consciousness; I will be calmer than cream” has to be a classic.

    011. Voxtrot播放Wrecking Force [2005]

This song certainly lives up to its name. With their EPs, Voxtrot was releasing the kind of music that was so fucking hard to come by mid-decade. Shambling indie rock that sounded like it was recorded on a rainy day in somebody’s bedroom, but is actually way more rich and complex than that.

It’s a song about living life to the fullest. And it doubles as an outright invitation to do so. Actually, a lot of their songs have this kind of fatherly advice thing going on. But sounding more like an ancient philosopher than a straight-laced patriarchal figure. Religion? “You can be your own god if you want to.” Art? You can lose yourself in it. Pain and loss? It’s gonna happen, kid. But it’s a hell of a lot better than what comes out of avoiding new experiences. Trust me… I have the overgrown iTunes library and record collection to prove it.

Now get out there, champ, and climb a mountain or something… (after you finish reading this list, of course.)

    010. Junius播放A Word Could Kill Her [2006]

Junius is what would have happened if Interpol hadn’t decided to look toward the growing chorus of collegiate hipsters for their emergent fanbase and instead grew beards, traded in their dapper suits for hooded sweatshirts, and started frequenting sludge metal shows. In case you’re trying to ponder that, it’s a compliment.

The red-and-black is still there, except the red aspects are deeper in hue and dripping with vitality. In fact, I don’t think this band has any other colors within its aesthetic range than those two. The mopey quirkiness of trendy indie rock, however, is not there. In fact, the ferocious Junius will bite the head off of any number of such bands that may just happen to have cutesy animalistic names.

And for my money, they could probably take down a Mastodon or two.

    009. The National播放The Geese of Beverly Road [2005]
Oh, man. That intro is so illuminate and vivid that you can basically watch the fireflies float around under the neighborhood streetlights. This song is about kids setting off car alarms for thrills, yes, but it’s also about so much more than that.

    008. The Arcade FireRebellion (Lies) [2004]

I remember the moment I fell in love with this song. I had been listening to this album casually for days after seeing it nerped on a message board, but on a December night in 2004 I was driving home from an after-work get-together/party kind of thing with some new co-workers. All of a sudden, the song began and upon the moment when that already-familiar bass line entered my immediate consciousness, I was hearing the whole song in my head in fast-forward. Well before I was actually hearing it.

You know how you grow up watching Looney Toons and they use classical compositions therein, but you don’t know it’s, for instance, Bach when you’re like six-years-old? It’s kind of like that. That’s how instantly memorable this song was for me. I’m comparing it to Bach, for Christ sake!
I identify with it, in other words; it completes me; etc.

    007. Lansing-DreidenA Line You Can Cross [2006]

Holy huge-as-shit, decadent 80s synth-pop chorus, Batman! Except there’s no underbelly of melancholy to be inferred from it or anything within 20 yards of it. Listening to this track is like having an ice-cream sundae, a KB Toys shopping spree, and your parents getting back together all on the same day. It must be your birthday.

And of course they’re from Miami! But unfortunately nothing else off of The Dividing Island comes anywhere close to this.

    006. Absinthe BlindThe Break (It’s Been There All This Time) [2003]

You see? I know this song is about God and all. And despite being an atheist, I don’t even care about its unquestioning allegiance to the Almighty. Because this song is proof enough that beyond all of the suffering and misery in this world, there is an ultimate glory in which the virtuous and meek shall bask forever.

Or maybe it’s just that I dig songs with really humongous, ethereal and wispy instrumentation coinciding with strong, passionate vocals. A lot.

    005. Poem RocketSubway Relocation Memo [2000]

“Please take meeeeeeeeee!” These guitars, do not, in fact, sound like guitars. They actually sound like a subway train navigating one of the most chaotic and unnerving cities you could possibly imagine. It is a real train, but there is no love on it. And it does not, in fact, run on time.

    004. Doves播放Catch The Sun [2000]

This is what it sounds like when Doves fly.

    003. The Dismemberment Plan播放The Other Side [2001]

Those drums are absolutely insane and in a hurry to just do something. But then again, those lyrics sound like the kind of social insight that a Beat writer would have come up with after a few grammar courses and a 12-step program. Juxtaposed with that cool-as-a-cucumber but reverberating melody, it’s enough to make your mind bend in several different directions.

To put it simply, [iChange has the best career-finishing trifecta of all time in “Time Bomb,” “The Other Side,” and “Ellen And Ben.” Because after completing your swansong with three songs like that, you have nothing else to prove to anyone. Just dare someone else to eclipse it. Besides, there are actually important things in life other than music. Like T. Mo says, “I’m staying busy hanging with my nephew and tryin’ to keep my eyes on the prize.”

    002. AveoHaley [2004]

Not only does William Wilson sound particularly like Rob Dickinson and Mark Hollis here, the bassline refuses to relent; the arpeggiated main riff eventually explodes into a full-blown scorcher; and the density of the atmosphere gives one the impression that this is all being transmitted from a remote distance. These are some of the lyrics, which beg all sorts of questions, both literally and figuratively speaking:

“Haley made a curious remark: “Think we can leap-frog this month? Think we can hop-scotch this whole damned year? You wanna play hide and seek? No, I wanna play at sardines in a bomb shelter with love and A.M. radio.”

    001. OceansizeAmputee [2003]

Before you can even fasten your seatbelt and take a deep breath, this titan of a rock song blindsides you like doing four shots of four different types of liquor in less than 20 seconds. It hits you right in the goddamn nose, is essentially what I’m saying.

With unquestionably some of the best production that I’ve ever heard on any track in the modern era of recorded music, this isn’t just all about style either. No, sir. Upon first hearing it around the time of Effloresce’s release, this one five-and-a-half minute song was single-handedly responsible for making 20% of my CD collection at the time seem obsolete to me.

The only aspect of this song that can even remotely come close to being called into question is the lyrics. But they don’t matter. I mean, lyrics are great and everything. But if that’s really what you want out of life, go read some fucking poetry. If you want good music, listen to a band that’s both strong and advanced enough to harness and channel the best of what shoegaze, post-hardcore, and art-rock have ever had to offer into one power-packed song.

“Hip, hip hooray we’ll lose again…”

    ----------------------------------------------------------

So congratulations to any of the aforementioned artists or members of bands that may read this list. And thank you for making this truly stressful decade bearable to some extent with your wonderful music.

By September, I should have completed a list of my 200 favorite albums of the decade. Stay tuned.

  • 2009 - Musical Overview & Impressions

    2009年 2月 11日, 13:20 作者:deviates23

I tend to forget everthing very quick, that's why I will use this Blog to write down the impressions every month occur on music in the year 2009.

    January
    Already to late, but summarily:

Concert: +/- in Dresdens Beatpol was really nice.
Album: discovered on a deep elm sampler: I enjoyed
Small Arms Dealer A Singe Unifying Theory very, very much.

    February
Sad news: Verse Split. Just discoverd and amazed, now this. Fuck it.
Strike Anywhere: My big love since 2003 came to Germany and played some shows with Rise against. I visited Shows in Leipzig and Berlin. The latter one was definitly better because of less ignorance for the supporting acts. Rentokill was good. Strike Anywhere was awesome as usal. "Chalkine", "You're Fired" ... can't wait for the new LP in Autumn!
Album: The raised tour news finally induced the buying of Shook Ones Facetious Folly Feat Album. So far I listen like six times to it, but I can say that this already is one of my favourite albums. So amazing, so much hardcore and melody together. They are in Germany in May, also Death Is Not Glamorous, Tackleberry and Static Radio (NJ).

    March
Style: , a cuban music style entered my mind. When I have been to Cuba I just recognized it as music for tourists. But some artists combine it with jazz etc. That sounds much better. But I can't judge now or recommend any artist, it was just the first touch.
Album: After my introduction into HipHop with "Wu-Tang Clan" and "A Tribe called Quest", I discovered 10 years after the release another great record:Like Water for Chocolate.
But also enjoyed a new release: The Spirit of Apollo. It combines HipHop Artists with other Artists (i.e. Tom Waits) with very unique Beats. Great!
Artist: Her appearance at a show on myspace grab my attention: anna rikje rosenthal. Her music is pretty simple and catchy and normally not my style, but her voice has a incredible sweetness. I can't abscond.

    April
Artist, Album, Song: Dear Reader fills everything this month. I saw a few people who spoke very enthusiastic about them so I had a listen...Boom...one Song, only one song was enough to convince me, to make me listen to everything I found again and again.
I immediately bought the Album. Right now I have to lern for exam and so every break I lie on the gras and listen to "Replace why with funny". It makes me dream of better days during the day.
"Dearheart" is my favourite so far. The beat is fascinating. I heard it before, but here it is a perfect structure for the harmonies and her sweet voice.

Style: You should listen to the Radio of Appleblim. Great Mix between Dubstep and Electro. But honestly, I have no clue. Just discovered it and these unregularly bass sounds make me insane. I badly need a CD.

    May
Concert: The Month starts with one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
First Bridge And Tunnel convinced and played one of my favourite new styles: Hot Water Music Sounds combined with Indie or something like that.
Also the next Band used some of these influences: The Riot Before.
The increased the level of enthusiasm and it was a big pleasure to watch them play.
But than Death Is Not Glamorous swept everything away.
Also it was easy for them, because some guys went crazy and knew every word.
No surprise, cause they got great songs and they played a lot of them.
So, 3 Bands played a bit diffent styles, but with a lot of energy and passion.
    Rare!
Sad News II.: Fuck!!! After the Verse split in February the next great HC Band breaks up. Have Heart 2002 - 2009. Maybe you have to go for broke to create such great records as Verse and Have Heart did. Anywhere there is a big hole to fill and I can't see a band that is able to do that.
others: I was at a concert of the Brainworms. It was amazing. Especially the guitar play: Josh Smalls. He just helps out and got his own project, which I like too.
I enjoyed Polar Bear Club a lot. Although it is pretty late. I think I am always to late. Same with Get Up Kids. Exited, because both band will play in Berlin this summer.
The music magazine "Visions" already found the way in my mailbox. Seems like there will be a lot of good releases in June.

    June
Fuck: cause I ain't got the time to check out a lot of new music. Except for some really good stuff of Jonah Matranga (New End Original, Far) and Jeremy Enigk.
Concert: Austin Lucas, Mike Hale and Josh Small at AZ Conni in Dresden was a great concert. Quite a lot of people attend and showed a lot of attention for those you were on stage. Josh Small seems to be one of world's nicest people. He had some Problems with the Sound, but I enjoyed his Show so much. The Highlight was Austin playing acoustic in the middle of the crowd. By the way: ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead was as good as the Austin show. But it was terribly hot and there were far too many people (first time a saw a nearly sold out show in Dresdens Beatpol).
Album: The Gaslight Anthem's - The 59' Sound becomes bigger and bigger. I can't say when this process will be finished. I listen to it and it puts me into good homour.
Especially "Here's a looking at you, kid" has taken a shine on me.

    Juli
I have to learn fot my exams. That sucks. There isn't a lot of time for music. I'll see.
As I promised there hasn't been a lot of time for music.
Concert: At least I attended to some shows. Far From Finished played in a small venue in Dresden. When you're sitting in the libary for the whole day, a concert feels like a small reincarnation. So, I enjoyed it a lot singing "Bastard's Way" and "Destination Nowhere".

    August
Still learning half of the Month.
Concert: At least I attended to some shows. Far From Finished played in a small venue in Dresden. When you're sitting in the libary for the whole day, a concert feels like a small reincarnation. So, I enjoyed it a lot singing "Bastard's Way" and "Destination Nowhere".
After finishing my exams I immediately went to Berlin.
The I saw Richie Hawtin at the "Sunday Getaway" Show at the Spree. Very nice atmosphere combined with great sounds of Richie Hawtin and Domenic D'Agnelli at Rechenwerk later this evening.
Another big highlight was the Get Up Kids Show. The whole crowd knew every word and sang along, that was scary. I am to glad I could listen to great Songs like "10 Minutes" and "Action and Action" first hand.
Album: Finally discovered "Alligator" by The National. People always swarm about them and I couldn't understand why. But after some listenings I really enjoyed them.

    September
Concert: The month started with a concert of the band Polar Bear Club. There was nothing special about it I guess. Anyway I think I got a new facoured artist. Especially "the redder, the better" EP and the homonymous Song convinced me, cause lyrics and music with the coarse voice of the singer form a absolutly authetic unit about taking all this shit that happens a bit positive. I like.
Concert: the month also ended with a concert: Dear Reader. Amazed in April, I could finally see them live: it was a big pleasure. The audience was quite polite and listen to them. They played quite inspired. Nice Show.
Album: Brian Moss and his former Band The Ghost grabed my attention. Listen quite often to the song "Death by the way" which has a really great melody. I like their sound that sometimes remindes of Fugazi stuff.
That's why I bought the LP of his new project, called Olehole, which is actually the sole new record I bought. I need more time & money.
