有如音乐顽童一般的JC，来自英国的威特夏尔，从八岁起玩吉他与钢琴，在哥哥班卡伦（Ben Cullum）的影响之下，他也开始狂热的爱上了爵士乐，尤其特别崇拜以钢琴驰名的奥斯卡彼得森（Oscar Peterson）与戴夫布鲁贝克（Dave Brubeck）等传奇的爵士大师，甚至以十六岁的年纪，早早的就跑到巴黎去，在一些爵士俱乐部里卖唱，磨练自己的技巧。返回英国后，他进入瑞丁大学深造，主修电影与英国文学，课余的时间，除了继续卖唱，还在比萨店打工。十九岁那年，他自掏腰包，以“JC三重奏”的名义发表首张专辑“Heard It All Before”。唱片推出后，他很意外的接获一位爵士贝司手杰夫盖斯寇恩（Geoff Gascoyne）的邀约，参加其专辑的录制，而在盖斯寇恩的鼓励之下，他又在2002年推出第二张专辑“Pointless Nostalgic”，被英国广播电视名人麦可帕金森（Michael… Parkinson）予以强力放送而引起广大注意，查尔斯王子在帕金森的节目中看到JC的才华后，甚至因为大为激赏，特别邀请他在2003年五月，前往圣詹姆斯宫，为英国女王的生日宴会御前演唱，更加的声名大噪。
