Gamma Ray是继HELLOWEEN之后的另一支杰出的德国速度金属乐队，由HELLOWEEN的创始人Kai Hansen成立。当初由于对乐队内部一些问题的不满，这位德国金属界的元老于1988年底离开了HELLOWEEN，并于次年组建了GAMMA RAY。 本来刚刚摆脱了乐队问题捆绕的Kai Hansen不想再组乐队，他只找了一名专职的主唱：曾经落选HELLOWEEN的Ralph Scheepers，打算以个人名义继续自己的音乐事业，不过在录制专辑的过程中，各个乐手之间合作的很愉快，感觉相当不错，所以最终Kai Hansen决定再组一支乐队。于是GAMMA RAY诞生了。1990年1月乐队首张专辑Heading For Tomorrow发行，立即取得巨大的成功，尤其是在德国本土和日本。和当年初出道的HELLOWEEN一样，专辑的风格是典型的旋律非常优美的速度金属，吉他表现出色，歌曲节奏感强，张弛有力，再加上积极严肃的歌词，这是一张没有理由不畅销的专辑，同时我们也看到了一支没有理由不走红的乐队。为了能顺利的完成自己的学业，鼓手Mathias… Burchardt在乐队首次露面之后不久即离开了GAMMA RAY。接替他的是Uli Kusch（现HELLOWEEN鼓手）。9月，在首次的巡演途中，乐队推出了一张EP Heaven Can Wait，其中有三首本属于Heading for Tomorrow录制计划中的歌曲。在日本，乐队的演出受到了歌迷最热烈的欢迎，从91年推出的一部现场录象带Heading for the East中我们可以清楚的看见乐队所受到的欢迎。从91年二月开始，乐队一直呆在丹麦为第二张专辑作着积极的准备。9月在与制作人Tommy Newton的成功合作之下，乐队推出了第二张专辑Sigh No More。出于对当年的海湾战争的关注，专辑中的歌词显得较为压抑，曲风与首张专辑相比也是变化很大，专辑的封面是一个穿礼服的骷髅魔术师，不过魔术师并没有给乐队带来好运，这张专辑不是很受欢迎，在巡演中，反响也远逊色于第一张专辑，甚至在德国，乐队演出的情况也不如以前那样轰动了。92年初，在结束日本的演出之后，由于内部成员间的私人矛盾，贝司手Uwe Wessel和鼓手 Uli Kusch离开了乐队。不过有机会加入GAMMA RAY这样的乐队，是很多乐手的愿望，所以没多久GAMMA RAY就把汉堡的一支年轻乐队Anesthesia的贝司手Jan Rubach和鼓手Thomas Nack一块挖了过来。此后的一年中，乐队一直在忙于成立自己的录音室。直到1993年六月，第三张专辑Insanity and Genius才面市。吸取了Sigh NoMore的教训，这次专辑的风格回归到了Heading for Tomorrow时期：旋律化的速度金属，其实这也是Kai Hansen真正擅长的风格。在”Melodic Metal Strikes Back”音乐节上，乐队带着这张专辑参与了演出，同台的还有HELICON，CONCEPTION和RAGE。另外乐队还把在汉堡的现场分别制作成 VIDEO和CD发行，VIDEO名为Lust for Live，CD叫做The Power of Metal。录制第四张专辑之前，乐队解雇了主唱Ralf Scheepers。原因是Ralf Scheepers的住处离乐队所在地汉堡有500英里的路程，所以Ralf
