Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band which puts emphasis on the use of operatic elements and death grunts, also performing some song passages in Latin. It was founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen subsequent to his departure from After Forever.

In late 2002, Mark Jansen left After Forever due to creative differences and began looking for musicians to integrate a new musical project, initially named Sahara Dust. In early 2003, the band counted with Helena Michaelsen (from Trail of Tears) as its frontwoman, but shortly after she was replaced by the then unknown mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, girlfriend of Jansen. The band’s line-up was completed by guitarist Ad Sluijter, drummer Jeroen Simons, bassist Yves Huts and keyboard player Coen Janssen. Their name was changed to Epica, inspired by Kamelot’s album Epica.

Epica then assembled a choir (made up of six men and six women) and a string orchestra (three violins, two violas, two cellos and a double bass) to play along with them. Their debut album, The Phantom Agony, was produced by Sascha Paeth (known for having previously produced bands such as Angra, Rhapsody of Fire and Kamelot) and was released in late 2003.

Their second release, entitled Consign to Oblivion, was influenced by the culture of the Maya civilization, a fact which can be noticed, for example, on songs which integrate the “A New Age Dawns” arch. “A New Age Dawns” refers to the time system of the Mayan people, which extends up to the year of 2012, and makes no reference of what may happen past said year.

@Liadz: I understand where you are pointing... Still, Epica don't advertise for any of these books, and they don't overstress the whole quantum daydreaming in their songs either. Much less annoying than "white metal" or vampire kitsch to me, although I'm still far from defending it as poetry.

I have to say that whilst the lyrics may not flow together so well, they do provide a good accompaniment to the actual music itself just in the way they sound alongside everything else. That, and I really relate to the themes that they use in their songs - The problems of religion, and now Freedom, and its many different aspects. They're all explored down to the basic level, and I respect that more than typical lovey dovey melodramatic filler. It's interesting and adds an extra dimension of thoughtfulness to their lyrics - some bands can sound good, but still not have that.

@smin1np: I completely agree with your first post, I never thought Epica's lyrics were above the average, and some of them are even really bad. Still their music is awesome (except in TPA, since I think the music is too generic and the simple drums annoy me). About your second post, I agree in parts. There is really some speculation about the theme, lots of theories and all and people trying to prove their point valid. But for the number of books that take these speculations and points of view as given facts and mix them with lots of mysticisms creating a Frankenstein "magic/spiritual science", I think the thing is running to the Scientology level, where it's done because it sells.

"and with music like Epica's I think we can turn a blind eye on this." Which is what people are doing, and yet you seem surprised. :D

However, as for that quantum mysticism thing, it's somewhat more than just pseudoscience. I can well imagine that it were real scientists who first started this meme (I think we can call it a meme). Classical physics has been modeling the world as a deterministic system, but we (believe we) have free will. Then, suddenly quantum physics arrives and starts throwing around with probabilities. It's easy to connect the dots, isn't it? Of course, it's pure speculation with no real evidence, but scientists love to speculate. And entanglement looks so damn much like telepathy, doesn't it? I think these are all things that one can think about without wasting one's time, provided one has some background in physics. Unlike creationism or Scientology, it's not pseudoscience that was made to push someone's (hegemonic or financial) interests.

Somehow this shoutbox is forgetting that Epica's lyrics never have been above average. And that complexity is not a virtue for itself. Most songs have some highlights in their texts ("forgiveness is not for sale, nor is the will to forget" or "I'm not afraid to die, I'm afraid to be alive without being aware of it") and sometimes we get a rather good full song, but the bulk of the lyrics is rather awkward IMHO - certainly no pinnacle of poetry. But good lyrics are not quite common in this kind of music, alas, and with music like Epica's I think we can turn a blind eye on this.

@runforafall: No! You don't!!!! =P Quatum mysticism is not complex, it's only one of the many science deformations that are so common and popular nowadays with all this new age wave. Protip: When you read/listen phrases that begin with "Specialists say/have proved/agree that....." remember: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoscience ;D

@Liadz: I get your point, the lyrics are a bit weird and complex this time, but not in the entire album.. I only noticed the quantum stuff in Kingdom of Heaven and Design your Universe track.. Besides Simone said in an interview that it wasn't a conceptual album, Burn to a Cinder for example was about the Intervew with the vampire movie, Tides of time about losing a beloved person.. Anyway, I like all the lyrics of DYU (-:
