This and Enjoy the Silence together. I just bursted into tears after transition. So powerful and beautiful.

What a wonderful way to end Side A of one of the greatest records that ever existed. This works on so many levels, the absence of percussion and the wavelike soft synths caress you with cold warmth, and you're amidst an electronic sea, an electric forest. "And when I squinted the words seemed rose-tinted..."

There is a sound in the calm Someone is coming to harm I press my hands to my ears It's easier here just to forget fear

And when I squinted The world seemed rose-tinted And angels appeared to descend To my surprise With half-closed eyes Things looked even better Than when they were open

The composition on this is honestly some of the most complex I've ever heard in new wave and the lyrics are more beautifully written than I feel I could ever hope to achieve. The lyrics rival Scott Walker's farmer in the city for me for how they paint a complex, despairing yet ultimately beautiful in the most tragic sense with their description of an individual experiencing total isolation and feeling enveloped by an omnipresent darkness. Violator is an album that deserves remembrance within art and would on this track alone as far as I'm concerned, I've heard a lot of similar music but not many that seem to paint an image of human desire and needs that seemingly take on new meanings and develop established meanings upon further inspection. This probably sounds really pretentious and shit but I really can't help but hold this album in extremely high esteem.

so to the people saying this is beautiful and the most gorgeous song ever and omg i could fall asleep to this and whatever - have you people actually listened to the lyrics? this is a really fucking dark, kind of bitter song (much like most of Violator, really). it's not supposed to be peaceful and meditative, it's supposed to be claustrophobic and suffocating.

I'd actually say that the beauty of the song comes from its complexity in its representing both manners of interpretation, kinda. It describes a state of complete isolation from fears and worries in terms of an external world, but when looking at it on a deeper level is describes a total dependency on this area of safety that essentially traps the central character. It's like building your own prison that's essentially all you want but only from denying the existence of more complex desires to be free. The song seems to reflect bad faith but maybe even an abstract sense of stockholme syndrome in building walls out of fear but forcing oneself to love it based on utter dread of going beyond what they know. I think it displays a person's ability to feel comfort in their isolation and embracing themselves alone in the silence, but also how it can cripple you upon growing dependency upon a "safe space." That's my interpretation, but I do agree it's more complex than people often make out.
